As the Austrian member of the Board of Directors of the EU Agency for Fundamental
Rights (FRA) I, along with the House of the European Union, cordially invite you to the
FRA roundtable, which takes place on the 16th December 2015 at 18.30 in the House
of the European Union (Wipplingerstraße 35, 1010-Vienna).
On the occasion of this year’s FRA-roundtable we would like to mark the arrival of the
new Director of the Agency for Fundamental Rights, Prof. Michael O’Flaherty, by
giving him the opportunity to introduce himself and give an overview to offer up his
considerations regarding the promotion and protection of fundamental rights within the
EU.
Michael O'Flaherty is currently a Professor of Human Rights Law at National University
of Ireland Galway in Ireland, as well as Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights. He
has also been a member of the United Nations’ Human Rights Committee, and has been
active in the field of human rights for over 20 years, nationally and internationally. In
addition he has served as the Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights
Commission.
I have the pleasure of acting as host for the evening and providing an overview of the
work of FRA in the past year. At the end of Professor O’Flaherty’s speech, I will lead a
discussion with him about some of the most pressing human rights challenges we face in
the present day. All those present will be welcome to participate in the discussion.
The event will be held in English.
Following the roundtable discussion, the Ambassador of Ireland Mary Whelan requests
the pleasure of your company at a reception to welcome Professor Michael O’Flaherty to
Vienna, where there will be the opportunity to socialise and mingle.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, liebe KollegInnen,
als österreichisches Mitglied des Verwaltungsrats der EU Agentur für Grundrechte (FRA)
lade ich Sie/Dich, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Haus der Europäischen Union, herzlich
zum FRA-Roundtable ein, der am 16. Dezember 2015 um 18.30, im Haus der
Europäischen Union (Wipplingerstraße 35, 1010-Wien) stattfindet.
Bei dem diesjährigen FRA-Roundtable möchten wir dem neuen Direktor der EU
Grundrechteagentur, Prof. Michael O’Flaherty, die Gelegenheit geben sich
vorzustellen und einen Überblick über seine Ziele sowie seine Überlegungen zur
Förderung und zum Schutz der Grundrechte in der EU zu präsentieren.
Michael O'Flaherty ist gegenwärtig Professor für Menschenrechte an der National
University of Ireland in Galway und Direktor des irischen Zentrums für Menschenrechte.
Zuvor war er Mitglied des Menschenrechtsausschusses der Vereinten Nationen.
Insgesamt blickt er auf eine über 20-jährige Tätigkeit im Menschenrechtsbereich auf
nationaler und internationaler Ebene zurück. Darunter fällt auch seine Tätigkeit als
Hauptkommissar der Nordirländischen Kommission für Menschenrechte.
Ich habe die Freude Sie durch den Abend zu führen, Ihnen einen Überblick über die Arbeit
der FRA im vergangenen Jahr zu geben und im Anschluss an den Vortrag von Michael
O’Flaherty mit ihm die aktuellen, menschenrechtlichen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit
zu diskutieren. Alle Anwesenden sind dabei eingeladen, sich in die Diskussion
einzubringen.
Die Veranstaltung findet in englischer Sprache statt.
Im Anschluss an die Diskussion bittet die irische Botschafterin Mary O’Whelan zu einem
Empfang um Prof. Michael O’Flaherty in Wien willkommen zu heißen, bei dem es bei
irischen Spezialitäten die Möglichkeit zum informellen Austausch geben wird.
Ich freue mich auf Ihr/Dein Kommen und ersuche um allfällige Weiterleitung an weitere
