The Lens of Culture, III Ursula Wirtz, Ph.D. Sunday, November 1, 2015, 10:30 a.m.-­12:00 p.m. IHM Retreat Center, 50 Mt Carmel Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87505 Description of Presentation and Educational Methods Through lecture and group discussion we view the impact of traumatic events upon individual and group identities using the lens of culture. Dissociation, repression and complex formation are shown as central responses to trauma alongside the role of resilience and adaptation in the face of adversity. We conclude our investigation of culture specific paths of healing that restore meaning to traumatized individuals and collectives. Highlighting the centrality of the symbolic function, a special emphasis is placed upon uses of mythology, storytelling and ritual in framing and containing trauma. Educational Objectives At the completion of this seminar participants will be able to: 1) evidence respect for a culture’s creative skills in coping with trauma. 2) demonstrate imaginal techniques for working with trauma. 3) differentiate symbolic approaches to personal trauma from those utilized at the group level Presenter: Ursula Wirtz Dr. phil., is a Jungian training and supervising analyst with a diploma from the C. G. Jung Institute Zürich (1982). She received her doctorate in philosophy from the University of Munich and a degree in Clinical and Anthropological Psychology from the University of Zürich. She is currently on the faculty of ISAPZURICH. She has taught at various European universities and published on trauma, ethics, and the spiritual dimension of analytical psychology. She is also involved in the training of fledgling Jungian groups in Eastern Europe and is a member of the ethics committee of the IAAP.
