Nigel Dunnett, bekannt unter anderem für die Pflanzplanung des Olympic Parks und des Kunst‐ und Konferenzzentrums The Barbican in London, ist Experte auf dem Gebiet naturnaher, dynamischer Pflanzkonzepte und deren Anwendung im urbanen Kontext. Im Rahmen seiner Gastprofessur an der Abteilung Gartenbau wird er eine geblockte Lehrveranstaltung zum Thema ‚Ecological Planting Design in Urban Landscapes’ abhalten. Thema und Inhalt Klimawandel, die Notwendigkeit eines sorgsamen Umgangs mit natürlichen Ressourcen aber auch die angespannte finanzielle Situation der Kommunen ändern die Rahmenbedingungen der Pflanzenverwendung im städtischen Kontext. Intelligente, nachhaltige Pflanzkonzepte können im Umgang mit den ökologischen Herausforderungen heutiger Stadtentwicklung einen wesentlichen Beitrag leisten. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte dieses Kurses werden strukturierte Staudenpflanzungen und dynamische Wiesen sein. Bezugnehmend auf Wien und die angrenzende pannonische Florenregion wird ein spezieller Fokus auf Pflanzengemeinschaften der Steppen‐ und Trockenrasenvegetation gelegt. Ziel Der Kurs vermittelt ein grundlegendes Verständnis über Ökologie, Entwicklung und Management naturnaher Pflanzungen im städtischen Raum. Das vermittelte theoretische Wissen wird im Rahmen eines Entwurfsworkshops angewandt. Für einen konkreten Ort in Wien soll ein Bepflanzungskonzept erarbeitet werden. Lehr‐ und Lernmethoden Neben den Vorträgen werden Exkursionen zu nahegelegenen Trockenrasen‐ und Steppenstandorten (Hundsheimer Berg) das Verständnis für die dynamischen Prozesse natürlicher Pflanzengesellschaften vertiefen. Die Analyse von Best Practice Beispielen städtischer Pflanzungen bildet die Grundlage für die Konzeption einer Bepflanzung für einen konkreten Ort (Entwurfsworkshop). Die Ausarbeitung des Entwurfsprojektes erfolgt in der Kleingruppe. Die Ergebnisse werden im Rahmen des Symposiums ‚Pflanzenverwendung im urbanen Raum‘ am 21.06.2016 präsentiert. Best practice examples of urban plantings will be analysed and form the basis for the development of a concrete planting design (studio workshop).
