British company Grosvenor has applied its three centuries of
expertise in property development and town planning to create The
Westminster Roppongi: a luxurious apartment building in Tokyo. This
exclusive residential project, in the heart of the capital’s cultural hub
Roppongi, has been developed in collaboration with a select handful
of international architects, designers and artists. Its apartments have
been carefully designed for those who demand the highest standards
of modern living, be they an individual, couple or family.
グロブナーは、創業以来 3 0 0 年以上にわたってロンドンのウ
エストエンドを開発し、技術と英知を培ってきたイギリスを
代表する不動産グループです。そのグロブナーが、東京の中

The company’s origins date back to 1677, when the marriage of Mary
Davies and Sir Thomas Grosvenor brought with it ownership of a plot
of land that until this time was nothing more than swamp, pasture
and orchard fields. The area was later developed into a fashionable
residential district and over time, and with much care, it developed
into the prestigious London Estate that can be seen today. With a roll
call of former residents including the composer Mozart and rock star
Jimi Hendrix, the Grosvenor legacy continues into the 21st century
thanks to iconic and sought-after addresses such as Eaton Square and
Chester Square.

Built as a place of tranquil reflection for its residents, the Westminster
Roppongi’s focal point is a traditional Japanese garden to the rear of
the lobby. The centrepiece of this garden comprises two standout
pieces of ancient Japanese art and craftsmanship. The first is a
sculpture by leading stone artist Masatoshi Izumi, a former partner of
the renowned artist Isamu Noguchi. The second is a Shidare (weeping)
cherry tree grown by Toemon Sano, one of Japan’s most treasured
artisanal cherry-tree growers. The longevity of the Shidare cherry tree
is famous, and the tree is both a symbol of Grosvenor’s wish for the
future growth and prosperity of the area and a reflection of Japan’s
four beautiful seasons.

Highly esteemed British architects Paul Davis + Partners have
previously designed bespoke homes for members of The Beatles
and Duran Duran. Here, they have applied their trademark exacting
standards, devising a homely feeling of warmth by creating open-plan
living, dining and kitchen layouts that evoke a sense of space further
emphasised by large, expansive windows. Softening details such as
tile and timber flooring with under-floor heating flow throughout the
dining room and living room, creating a continuation of space and

renovation of heritage buildings. They have worked across the globe
on urban design, residential and retail schemes, and their projects
include the Dorchester Collection’s 45 Park Lane hotel and the
refurbishment of the Grade II-listed Duke of York’s Headquarters.

With The Westminster Roppongi, you have remodelled an existing
building. This is a revolutionary approach in Asia, where the
construction model is usually to demolish an existing building and
rebuild it from scratch. What was your architectural approach?
‘Because we often work on renovation projects and heritage buildings
in the UK, we are used to constraints – and rather than seeing them
as a disadvantage, we see them as an opportunity. Other architects
might be more used to starting from a blank sheet of paper, whereas
we often work to enhance the character of a building. Here, the
original construction looked rather cold so we worked to make it
warmer and more welcoming by using natural materials such as timber,
slate and marble.’

How did you use your materials to achieve the desired effect?
‘We kept the number of materials to a minimum to keep the spaces
in the building uncluttered. We also added touches of richness –
the marble wall in the lobby, for example, is accented with lines of
gold paper that are cut into it and backlit. Elsewhere, we changed
previously inefficient apartment layouts by adding more bedrooms
and made the apartments feel more open by making the living area
open-plan.’

What was the most memorable aspect of the project?
‘Our most interesting challenge was to rationalise the spacing to
make it into one cohesive experience. We broke away from traditional
layouts and joined sections of the building so that they flow into each
other, rather than existing as separate disjointed areas. This gives the
building a much greater sense of a single, distinct identity, and ties the
project together in this really graceful way.’

STONE ARTIST
Born in 1938 into a stone sculptor family in Takamatsu, Kagawa
Prefecture, renowned Japanese stone artist and sculptor Masatoshi
Izumi had a 20-year working partnership with legendary artist Isamu
Noguchi. His works are exhibited in the National Palace Museum in
Taiwan and in the Art Institute of Chicago in the US. Stone sculpture
is a form of art unique to Japan, and Masatoshi’s work for The
Westminster Roppongi takes the form of two complementary halves
of stone split from the same mother rock. One part sits outside the
lobby and the other inside.
1 9 3 8 年、香川県高松市にある代々石工の家に生まれた和泉

How old were you when you started working with stone?
‘I come from a family of stone sculptors, so from the time I was born,
stone was something that surrounded me. I started my career in this
field seriously at the age of 15, and after working with stone for more
than 60 years, I still spend about 12 hours a day in my atelier.’

‘The beauty of the piece lies in the way it is cracked. In Japan, more
than anywhere, we treasure nature and I feel passionately that we
should treasure stone as a part of this. The idea is that when you
crack the stone, the spirit of what is inside comes to life, and what
comes out of this is the artwork. As a stone sculptor, I also believe it
is very important to consider the placement and surroundings of the
sculpture, and all of this had an influence on the finished work.’

‘I am currently custodian of 10,000 cherry trees and I approach them
as I would go about bringing up children. You shouldn’t leave them
alone too often, but on the other hand you cannot be overprotective
and smother them with too much care and attention – otherwise they
don’t thrive.’

What have you planted in The Westminster Roppongi?
‘It is a 35-year-old cherry tree that I have grown from seed. It’s an
Edo-higan, a variety of weeping cherry tree, also referred to as a
shidare-zakura in Japanese. Its boughs hang down to create a beautiful
and poetic effect. It is a tree that creates a calming and tranquil space
around it. In this context it will provide a peaceful respite from the
busy city life of surrounding Roppongi. Residents will be able to view
the cherry tree from their apartments or the entrance lobby and it will
become part of their daily life in this way.’

What is the most important aspect of designing a great garden?
‘Above all else, you should treasure and love nature and pay it due
respect. There is never a day off in a job like mine: work starts the
moment I wake up. Every day is a learning experience and will continue
to be such for as long as I live.’

Raised in Kamakura, Japan, Noritaka Tatehana is a renowned
dressmaker, artist and shoemaker who uses ancient Japanese
craftsmanship in a contemporary context. His exquisite handiwork
and the bold designs of his heelless shoes have found him many fans
in the fashion industry, with Lady Gaga and Daphne Guinness among
his celebrity patrons.
What drives your art?
‘I am concerned that the artisanal industries in rural Japan are in
decline. Through my work, I want to help rebuild Japanese art and
culture and help it evolve. I believe that it is absolutely essential to
keep reinventing tradition and incorporate old Japanese art forms
such as kimono dyeing techniques into my work.’
神奈川県鎌倉市で生まれ育った舘鼻則孝氏は、日本古来の

職人たちの生活を支えてきた伝統工芸の産業が衰退してい
る現代において、私は自分の作品を通じて、日本の伝統芸

ています。そのため、友禅など古くから伝わる日本の芸術や
工芸技術に改めて注目し、自分の作品に取り込むようにして
ます。
Tell us about your piece for The Westminster Roppongi and the
inspiration behind it.
‘I have made a sculptural piece inspired by a kanzashi (a decorative
and traditional Japanese hair piece) and a painting to go with the
sculpture.Because of my background in fashion design,I feel close
to accessories that you wear on your body. This is why I chose the
Kanzashi as the subject matter for this piece. As for the painting, the
subject is Fujin and Raijin; the terrifying gods of wind and thunder.
The way that I have portrayed the two gods side by side and frozen
in a moment of rage, dynamically transcends the conventional form
of two-dimensional Japanese art. The intention is to create a threedimensional, spatial art-piece that will capture the imagination and
minds of the spectator. I see art as a mirror that reflects the period
of time in which it was created, but I wanted this piece to express
something close to a sense of Japanese identity that’s remained with
us throughout history.’

What materials did you use?
‘For the sculpture, the supporting part is made from iron and has been
precisely painted with intricate Japanese flower patterns which I
designed in a contemporary style. For the painting, I have dyed leather
with yuzen-zome (a 17th-century Japanese dyeing process), a specialty
of mine, and then applied gold foil to complete the work.’
今回制作したアート作品についてお聞かせください。また、
この作品は何にインスピレーションを受けて製作されまし
たか？
今回は、オブジェと絵画という２つの対になる作品を製作し
ました。オブジェにインスピレーションを与えてくれたのは、
日本に古くからある“ かんざし”です。ファッション業界からキ
ャリアをスタートした私は、装身具をとても身近に感じたた
め、かんざしをモチーフとした作品になりました。一方の絵
画は、神々の乱舞をテーマとした作品です。阿吽に構える風
神と雷神は、日本人にとって忘れがたき天災を擬人化した存
在です。今回の作品では、平面的な日本の様式美を超越し、
三次元の空間芸術として製作。訪れた人々を覆うような絵画
を描きました。アートは時代を写す鏡だと思いますが、今回
の作品では、むしろ長い時を経ても色褪せることのない日本
古来のアイデンティティーに近い部分を表現しました。
どんな素材を使ったのでしょうか？
オブジェに関しては鉄の支持体に緻密な塗装による和花柄
を表現しました。この和花柄は古来より伝わるものを現代風
にアレンジしたものです。絵画については、私が得意とする
1 7 世紀に生み出された友禅染の手法を用いて革を染めた
後、金箔や肉筆の技法を使い、完成させました。
