productivity.TheonJyanomalywasalittJehighJossofcuttings,bu(theloweringspeed
orthedriIlintheholedidnotshowanyaccumulationorcutt.ngs・MostlikeIy,thedrill
becamestuck,Simplybecausetheeoredidnotbreak,therebytrapplngthedrilIatthe
bottomofthehole.Unfbrtunately,thedepthorthestuckddlJwasatthetemperatuTe
minimumin thehote(−3TC).Usingdi鮎rent techniques,it was虹temptedto place
glyco)attopofthedrill.butinJackofaclearirldica(ionorthestJCCeSSOfthis▼teChnjque,
abarreloftechnicalglycoIwaspumpedintolhehole,hopingthatitwoulddropdownto
thebottom、fh:eingthedrillduringthenextmonths.Thisdidnotwork,andthedrilIis
slills(uCk.Onreasonfbrthefailureof什eeingthedrillcouldbe,thatthereac(ua11ywas
ahigheramountoricecuttJngSintheholethananticipated・ExpenmCntSShowed,thal
thechosendensiGer(HCFC141b)adherestothei¢eCuttingsin thehole,makingthem
dense.Thetheorythenis,thattheseheavylCeCuttmgS“rained−’downontopofthedrill

dril]ingintheAustralsummeT97/98.First,theholewasⅢtered触quentlydowntothe
bottomofthehole,tOenSu陀thattheholewasclean.Next.thedri11rotation,andthereby
thedrillpumpwaLSS(aTtedabovethebot(OmOfthehole,andthedriL]sJowlyloweredthe
lastmeterorso,thereby pumplngaWaythecuttingsthatmayhaveaccumulatedatthe
bottom.Thisseemedtowork伽e,andinadditionthepumplhatpumpedthechips鮎m
thedrillheadtothestorageinsidethedrillworkedpe血tly,Withanegligiblelossofice
Cutlings.Everythingworked伽cunti]adepthof780m,Whereitwasdimculttostartthe
