□第 8 回：文法編【G.パラフレーズって何だろう？】
＜パラフレーズ（リフレーズ）されている語をみつける！＞
パラフレーズ（paraphrase）または、リフレーズ（rephrase）とは「ある言葉を違う
言葉で言い換える」という意味です。瞬時に「言い換えられた言葉」を見極められるよ
うになると、TOEIC®のスコアも除々にアップしてくるでしょう。TOEIC®におけるど
のセクションにおいても、この技は活用できます。
＜問題＞
では早速、次の下線部を他の言葉に言い換えてみてください。
1. I was tied up.
2. Let’s look up the numbers in this chart.
3. I’ll try to take off two pounds by the end of this month.
＜解答例＞
1. I was tied up = I was busy.
2. numbers = figures
3. take off two pounds = lose two pounds/ lose weight
＜TOEIC®におけるリフレーズの問題＞
TOEIC®のリスニングセクションの Part3 を例にとって見てみましょう。
Man:
We are having a party tonight. Would you like to come? There will be some
people you worked with last year.
Woman: That sounds great! Thanks for inviting me, but tonight I’m actually tied
up.
Man:
Oh, that’s too bad. The party will last until late tonight, so if you feel like
joining us later on, please give us a call.
Woman: Thank you, Bob.
Question 1
Why can’t the woman make it to the party tonight?
a) She is not feeling well.
b) She is busy.
c) She doesn’t like parties.
d) She has to cook dinner.
＜正解: b )＞
もしも I’m tied up.という文が聞き取れ、尚かつ意味を知っていれば、あっさりと
b)の She is busy.が正解と分かります。
次にリーディングセクション Part 7 の E-mail を例にとって見てみましょう。
To: Tom Smith
From: Michiaki Tanaka
Subject: reimbursement for your commuting pass
Tom,
Thank you for sending me your email yesterday. I hope you had a good day on your
first day at work and hope you are looking forward to your new job.
You asked me in the email how to reimburse for your commuting pass. Please bring
your pass to the Personnel department anytime since we need to make a copy of it.
Then, we’ll add the money to your first salary. If I’m not in the office, you can talk to

2 段落目に”Please bring your pass to the Personnel department…”とあります。
Personnel department = Human Resources department 、どちらも「人事部」という
意味です。この語彙を知っていれば、問題なく正解の c を導き出すことができます。ど
ちらの単語も、かなり頻繁に TOEIC®に出てきます。

特に Listening セクションの Part 3 と 4、また Reading セクションの Part7 では、パ
ラフレーズ（リフレーズ）された言葉にどのくらい気がつくことができるかが勝負です。
そのためには、「語彙をたくさん増やさなければいけない」というのは言うまでもない
ことですが、比較的繰り返されて出てくる語彙や、問題の傾向をつかむことも大事です。

るようになるまで訓練していきます。もちろん、「語彙を増やすのはみなさんの努力な
