All for the Glory of God
Intro: When words begin to lose their meaning (Luke 2:14)
A question for the New Year: Why do we do what we do?
I.
What is God’s glory?
“God’s holiness is the incomparable perfection and greatness of who He is; His glory is
the display of that holiness.” (Isaiah 6:3, Lev. 10:3)
II.
What does it mean to, “do all things for the glory of God”?
A. To see and know and enjoy the incomparable perfection and greatness of God.
And then, in that joy and love, to reflect or display Him is in all we feel, think, say
and do.
B. Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light so shine…”
C. 1 Corinthians 10:31: We are to glorify God in everything we do.
D. There is no higher or better calling God could give. (Psalm 147:1)
III.
How can we do all things for the glory of God?
A. We turn away from putting other things before God.
B. We turn towards God as our chief joy and praise in all things.
C. We cannot add to God’s glory, we simply behold it and are changed by it. (2 Cor.
3:18)
IV.
“Why would God send people to hell for simply not living for His glory?”
A. Lack of faith in God reveals the condition of our hearts.
B. Illustration: A son and his mother – What God deserves
C. We all see God’s miracles every day and yet we do not thank Him or love Him or
praise Him. (Romans 1:20-21)
D. We have the gift of the Word of God, and yet people do not seek Him.
E. This is the condition of all people apart from amazing grace. (Romans 3:23)
V.
How is God’s God-centeredness love? (Is 41:16b)
A. Idols will burden us, God will carry us (Isaiah 46:1-5, Matthew 11:28-29)
B. False gods encourage self-centeredness. The true God encourages God-centeredness
(1 Peter 3:18) because He is the real treasure. (Isaiah 48:9-11, 43:25, Ps. 106:7-8,)
Application:
1. The reason Jesus came. (John 17:24, Romans 15:8-9)
2. Following Jesus’ example. (John 12:28)
Conclusion: Let us humble ourselves and live for His glory and not our own.
