京都大学と University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) においては、UC San Diego の設立当初における利根川進博士の
留学をはじめとして多くの学術研究交流が継続されて参りましたが、両校間における学術教育交流協定（MOU）は、2014 年 2 月に初め
て締結されました。この締結を受けて、2015 年 3 月 11－13 日の３日間にわたり、「第 22 回京都大学国際シンポジウム」として、「第 1
回京都大学－UC San Diego 共同シンポジウム: 太平洋を跨ぐ知的相互作用の新時代」（メインシンポジウム）および「バイオメディカ
ルサテライトシンポジウム: 京都とラ・ホヤにおけるバイオメディカル研究の最前線」を開催いたしました。メインシンポジウムの参加
者は 170 名（うち UC Sand Diego 招聘者 20 名）、サテライトシンポジウム参加者は 80 名（うち UC San Diego 招聘者 12 名）で、３日
間にわたり、幅広い分野において学術交流を行うことができました。
Kyoto University and University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) have been engaged in various research collaborations
from the very early years after the establishment of UC San Diego including Dr. Susumu Tonegawa's early research at UC San
Diego. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for collaboration and education, however, was signed between the two
universities only very recently - on February 2014. Having this MOU between us, the 1st Kyoto University - UC San Diego
Joint Symposium: New Era of Trans-Pacific Knowledge Interaction (Main Symposium) and the Biomedical Satellite
Symposium: Frontiers of Biomedical Research in Kyoto and La Jolla, both as the 22nd Kyoto University International
Symposium, were held on 11 - 13 March 2015. The Main Symposium was attended by 170 researchers, academic leaders
and industry people (including 20 invited UC San Diego researchers), and the Satellite Biomedical Symposium was attended by
80 researchers (including 12 invited UC San Diego researchers); the researchers had excellent networking and communication
opportunities over the three days.

3 月 11 日午前のメインシンポジウム－プレナリーセッションは、参加者全員で東日本大震災の犠牲者および被災者へ黙祷を捧げた後、
山極総長による歓迎の挨拶と「人間社会の進化：ゴリラ達から何を学べるか？」と題した基調講演で開始されました。

Yamagiwa opened the Main Symposium - Plenary Sessions March 11 with a welcome address and his keynote lecture entitled
"Evolution of Human Society: What we can learn from Gorillas".

UC San Diego 側からは、Paul K. L. Yu 教授（Provost, Revelle College, Former Associate Vice Chancellor for Research）の代表
挨拶に続いて、Mr. Ira S. Goodman (Associate Director for Administration, Moores Cancer Center) によるトランスレーショナルリサ
ーチに関する基調講演が行われました。

続いて、京都大学の特色のひとつでもある学際的地域研究の一端を紹介するセッションがもたれ、東南アジア研究所長の河野教授、地
域研究統合情報センター長の原教授の司会により、アフリカ地域研究資料センター長梶教授と東南アジア研究所西渕教授より興味
深い学際領域研究の紹介が行われました。

Kono, Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), and Professor Shoichiro Hara, Director of the Center for
Integrated Area Studies, with impressive lectures by Professor Shigeki Kaji, Director of The Center for African Area Studies, and
Professor Mitsuaki Nishibuchi from CSEAS.

プレナリーセッションの最後は、再生医科学研究所の近藤教授の座長にて、Dr. Philip Richter, Campus Veterinarian, Director, Animal
Care Program, Associate Clinical Professor in Pathology より UC San Diego における動物実験環境の紹介が行われました。
The final plenary session was chaired by Professor Gen Kondoh, Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences, with Dr. Philip Richter,
Campus Veterinarian, Director, Animal Care Program, Associate Clinical Professor in Pathology, describing the animal
experiment environment at UC San Diego.

ランチョンセミナーでは、京都大学および UC San Diego のコンピテンシーに関する計量書誌学的分析の概要が紹介され、活発な討論
が持たれました。
The Luncheon Seminar was held to introduce and review the results of intensive bibliometric analyses on competencies of Kyoto
University and UC San Diego which was so interesting that the participants discussed animatedly.
11 日の午後および 12 日の午前には、３会場に分かれて多彩な分野に跨がる１５の学術セッションが設けられ、両大学において各分野
を牽引する研究者による活発な「太平洋を跨ぐ知的相互作用」が行われました。座長、演者のポートレートおよび講演要旨については、

During the afternoon of March 11 and morning of March 12, a total of fifteen (15) sessions were held covering various fields of
research with the eminent chairpersons and leading professors/researchers from both universities, and intensive "trans-pacific
knowledge interactions" were actively facilitated. Please download and review the Program Brochure containing pictures of
chairpersons, lectures as well as abstracts of the presentations.
また、会期中には、京都大学の若手研究者も参加して、UC San Diego 招聘研究者との研究交流の場も、数多く設けられました。
Several informal discussion opportunities were also arranged during the three days with attendance of young researchers from
Kyoto University to talk with invited UC San Diego professors/researchers.

11 日の夕刻には、歓迎レセプションが開かれ、京都大学交響楽団メンバーによる弦楽四重奏および華道嵯峨御流家元（京都大学農
学部卒）による生花実演にも感動しつつ、なごやかな交流と親睦の機会を持つことができました。
Participants in the Welcome Reception/Banquet on the evening of March 11 were much impressed with the wonderful String
Quartet performance consisting of students from the Kyoto University Symphony Orchestra, as well as the traditional flower
arrangement demonstration by the Head of "Saga Goryu Flower Arrangement School" who is a graduate of Kyoto University
Faculty of Agriculture. This Reception/Banquet also provided frank and friendly communication and networking opportunities
among the researchers.

3 月 12 日には、最終のプレナリーセッションとして、森国際交流推進機構長の進行のもと、湊理事・副学長を含む両大学代表者（プロ
グラム参照）によるラップアップパネルディスカッションが行われ、今回のシンポジウムの意義を確認すると共に、今後の両大学間にお
ける学術研究交流および教育交流の発展について前向きな意見交換が行われました。
On March 12, the final plenary wrap-up panel session was held with Professor Jun-ichi Mori, Director General, Organization for
the Promotion and International Relations (OPIR), as the chairperson. The panelists (please refer to the Program Brochure)
including Professor Minato, Executive Vice-President for Research, Planning, and Hospital Administration, confirmed the
mission and success of this 1st Joint Symposium, and they also intensively discussed about the future development of research
and educational collaborations between Kyoto University and UC San Diego.

今回の第 1 回京都大学－UC San Diego 共同シンポジウムは、本学の「国際戦略 2x by 2020」も視野に入れつつ、UC San Diego と
の学術交流、教育交流の発展に繋がる face-to-face な学際的交流の機会を提供することができました。UC San Diego では、第２回の
共同シンポジウムを 2016 年 2 月～3 月にラ・ホヤのキャンパスにて開催する準備を進めています。
In a vision of Kyoto University's "International Strategy 2x by 2020", this 1st Kyoto University - UC San Diego Joint
Symposium provided interdisciplinary face-to-face networking opportunities for further research and educational collaborations.
Our colleagues at UC San Diego are now planning to organize and host the 2nd Joint Symposium at their La Jolla Campus
possibly in February - March 2016.
２日間のメインシンポジウムに続き、会場を移してバイオメディカル（生命科学および医学）の分野に焦点を合わせたサテライトシンポジ
ウム: 京都とラ・ホヤにおけるバイオメディカル研究の最前線を開催しました。
Following the 2-day Main Symposium, the Satellite Symposium entitled “Frontiers of Biomedical Research in Kyoto and La
Jolla” was held at another venue on March 13.

UC San Diego が広大なキャンパスを構えるカリフォルニア州ラ・ホヤ（サンディエゴの北隣）には、Salk Institute for Biomedical
Studies、The Scripps Research Institute、La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology、Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical
Discovery Institute などの著名なバイオメディカル系研究所が集結しており、大多数の指導的研究者は UC San Diego にも併任ポス
トを維持しています。また、これらの研究所群には、これまでも京都大学から多くの研究者が留学・赴任しています。利根川進博士は、京
都大学卒業後、UC San Diego にて学位を取得され、引き続き Salk Institute にて博士研究員として後のノーベル医学生理学賞の受賞
（1987 年）に繋がる研究を進められました。現在、UC San Diego および近隣研究所群には、著名な学術賞を受賞したバイオメディカル
研究者も数多く、今回は、その中でも第一線で活躍中の研究者を招き、同様に京都大学の第一線研究者の参加を得て、このサテライト
シンポジウムを開催することができました。
The large UC San Diego campus is located in La Jolla (northern vicinity to San Diego, California) where several world-leading
biomedical research institutions are actively collaborating with each other, such as Salk Institute for Biomedical Studies, The
Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology, and Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery
Institute. The majority of the leading researchers in these institutions have adjunct research/educational positions at UC San
Diego, and many researchers from Kyoto University have stayed at these institutions as well as UC San Diego not only as
students but also as postdoctoral fellows or visiting scholars; Dr. Susumu Tonegawa, after his graduation from Kyoto University,
acquired his Ph.D. at UC San Diego and then continued his intensive research at Salk Institute which would later earn him the
Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1987. The current researchers at these biomedical institutions include many
laureates of prestigious research awards. The Satellite Symposium included the world’s foremost researchers from these
institutions co-presenting and discussing with the world’s foremost researchers from Kyoto University.
このサテライトシンポジウムは、湊理事・副学長の座長により、本庶佑教授と Michel Karin 教授の講演による「炎症、免疫応答、がん
の新しい免疫治療」という、現在バイオメディカル分野においてもっとも注目されているトピックスのひとつをテーマとした基調セッションで
開始されました。
The Satellite Symposium was opened with the Keynote Session Chaired by Professor Nagahiro Minato, Executive
Vice-President for Research, Planning, and Hospital Administration, with Professors Tasuku Honjo and Michael Karin on
"Inflammation, Immunity, and Novel Immunotherapy in Cancer", one of the most attractive and hot topics in biomedical research.

引き続き、夕刻にかけて、シグナル伝達から、がん、免疫そして神経などの高次機能、更には IPS 細胞を含む幹細胞、再生医療に至る
までの領域における最新のトピックスについて、全米科学アカデミー（NAS）の会員や Thomson Reuters が毎年発表する Highly
Cited Researchers（高頻度被引用研究者）にランクインする方々、および同様にこの分野の最前線で活躍される京都大学研究者から、
最新の研究成果を一日で聴くことができるという、またとない貴重な機会となりました。セッションタイトル、座長、演者、講演タイトルにつ

Many of the invited researchers are appointed as National Academy of Science (NAS) members and/or ranked as highly cited
researchers by Thomson Reuters annual survey. We conducted this unique one-day opportunity to listen to the lectures of
world-class researchers covering fields ranging from signal transduction to cancer biology, immune systems, neuroscience and
stem cells including iPSC, as well as regenerative medicine. Please download and review the Program Brochure containing

また、昼食会や懇親・情報交換会においては、研究の最前線に関する討論のみならず、今後の研究・教育連携の推進についても、幅広
い意見交換が行われました。
During the lunch time and the Networking Banquet, researchers also actively discussed not only the frontiers of their research
interests but also about a wide range of further research and educational collaborations.

このように、今回のサテライトシンポジウムは、バイオメディカル分野における京都大学と UC San Diego を含む La Jolla 一帯の研究
所群との、さらなる学術教育交流の大きな可能性を確信させられる機会となりました。UC San Diego においては、バイオメディカル分野
に特化した次回のシンポジウム（2016 年）についても計画と準備を進めています。
As reported above, this Biomedical Satellite Symposium served as a unique platform for the further development of research and
educational collaborations between Kyoto University and UC San Diego, as well as the biomedical research institutions in La
Jolla. Our colleagues at UC San Diego are also exploring the possibility of hosting the next biomedical symposium in 2016.
