Example Summary (The Bald Eagle)
The reading passage discusses the fall and subsequent resurrection of the Bald Eagle
population in North America. According to the passage, the Bald Eagle population dropped
from 75000 to 450 nesting pairs between 1782 and the 1960s due to the introduction of the
pesticide DDT, which invaded the bird’s main food source. However, thanks to the
introduction of several federal laws recognizing the Bald Eagle as an endangered species,
as well as the banning of DDT, the population of the Bald Eagle has now increased to 5000
nesting pairs, and the bird is no longer considered to be endangered.
