守礼の門復元工事着手 1957年８月1日
守礼の門復元工式 1958年10月15日
第二世界大戦で唯一地上戦となった沖縄では、多
守礼の門復元工事　柱立状況　1958年６月くの人名と共に貴重な文化財が失われてしまいま
した．戦前国宝と指定されていた23件余の建造
物は、
すべて灰と帰し、私たちは戦前のその姿を写
真や、
その他の資料によってのみ想起するしかあり
ませんでした．
しかし、戦後混乱の中で、郷土を想
う人々が文化財を守り、復元に尽力したお陰で守
礼の門は平和な沖縄を象徴し、観光の名所となっ
ている．

ABOUT US
The Indiana Okinawa Community group was born
in 1985. In 1994, it was officially registered as The Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai.
Our mission is to honor the traditions and respect
and be a proud member of the world wide Okinawa
family. Our goal is to represent Okinawa well and
bring Okinawan culture to the central Indiana area
as well neighboring communities. Indiana Okinawa
Kenjinkai will continue to instill the spirit and values
for future generations.
Our main activities include a picnic in summer,
and the New Year’s party. We participate in the annual
Indiana International Festival and volunteer for community projects, such as visits to nursing homes and
area schools for special events.
Because Okinawa is a Chanpru ( a mixed) culture,
we changed our membership policy. Anyone who
shares our interest in the Okinawan culture, is eligible
to be a member of the Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai.

インディアナ沖縄県人会の発起はインディアナ州に住んで
いるうちな〜んちゆが集まり、
ご馳走を食べ、
ゆんたくをしな
がら楽しく過ごしましょう〜とのかけ声で1985年頃からの始
まりです。1994年、正式に沖縄県県庁へ登録されました。
年間行事としてピクニック、
旧正月を行い、
インターナショナ
ルフェステバルではブースとパフォーマンスで沖縄紹介．　数
多くのボレンテイア活動にも力を入れています。
２００１年の
ウチナーンチュ大会へ出席し、各県人会の活躍ぶりを見て、
意欲を燃やし、会員皆で楽しめる県人会を目指し常に努力し
ています。
2005年から方針を改め、沖縄の良き理解者で、文化に興
味を持たれていられる方への会員加入も受け入れています．
沖縄の文化はチャンプルー文化とも云われるほどにユニー
クさがあります．
インディアナ沖縄県人会にもチャンプルー文
化を築き、”世界のウチナーンチュ”として、次期世代に受け継
げるように頑張っています。

GREETING
On behalf of all the Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai members, I
am grateful that you have chosen to be with us today, to share
the joy as we celebrate our 15th anniversary. Today’s celebration is the biggest event Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai has ever
planned. The generous support and cooperation of members,
their families, friends, and neighboring kenjinkai have made
it all possible.
Our sincere appreciation to all who have traveled from
Okinawa Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture, California, Chicago
Okinawa Kenjinkai, Kentucky, Michigan Okinawa Kenjinkai,
North Carolina Okinawa Kenjinkai, Ohio Okinawa Tomonokai, and Washington DC Okinawa Kai for being with us today.
Today, we have very special performances by Grand Master
Kazuko Chibana of Aharen Honryu Keisen Wa Kai, and by
Instructor Tomiko Uemura Baka of Miyagi Ryu Nosho Kai,
North Carolina Branch came from far to perform for us. Also,
Chicago Okinawa Kenjinkai, and Ohio Okinawa Tomonokai
present their performances to help celebrate our anniversary.
The members of Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai hope you
will be able to say this has been a truly delightful afternoon,
and that memories of this celebration will remain in your
heart and be shared through the years to build a constructive
“bridge” between present and future generations. Thank you!

寒さもようやく衰えはじめましたが、皆様にはますますご健勝のこととお喜び
申し上げます．
いつも格別なお引き立てを賜り厚くお礼を申し上げます．

インデイアナ沖縄県人会の１５周年祭を開催する事が出来ます
事は会員の皆様、
ご家族、友人、
そして他州県人会の皆様の惜しみないご支

ご協力の賜物と深く敬意を表します．多くの皆さんの力強い努力が実り、今
日の記念祭を迎える事が出来ました．
インデイアナ沖縄県人会にとっては始めての大行事で、計画してからの四

CONGRATULATORY
ADDRESS
I would like to express my sincerest congratulations
on the 15th anniversary of the Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai.
Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai was established in 1994.
Since then, it has opened its door not only to Okinawan
descendants, but also to those who have interest in
Okinawan culture. It has sustained harmonious relations among its members, encouraged mutual support,
exhibited Okinawan cultural activities, and put efforts
to promote cultural exchange and social advancement
of Okinawan descendants in Indiana.
I have heard of high ratings Kenjinkai has received
twice in the last four years at annual International Festival. Introduction of Ryubu (Okinawan dance), Eisa,
and Karate at the Festival must be quite an experience
for people in attendance.
I would like to pay my sincere respect for your
cooperation on Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival, an
International Exchange Programs which Okinawa Prefecture undertakes, and for your taking an active part
in bridging between Okinawa and America for cultural
exchanges.
As Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai enters the 15th year, I
hope that members be even more strongly united with
confidence and pride as Uchinanchu, and continue to
get involved in many forthcoming cultural events.
We at the Okinawa Prefectural Government are continuing to expand the World Uchina Network in order
to further the development between our Prefecture and
Okinawan societies abroad.
I would like to offer my best wishes for the continued
success of the Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai and for the
future happiness of its members.

1. かじゃで風節
沖縄の古典舞踊の中で、最も祝儀的色彩の
濃い踊りで、長寿、富、子孫繁栄の三つの条件
を揃えており備えており、神格化されています．
この踊りには扇舞のすべての基本が盛り込まれ
ている．
「今日の嬉しさは、何にたとえることが出来よ
うか．
あたかも蕾（つぼみ）
が露を受けてぱっと
咲いたような心持ちである」　この祝儀舞踊は
祝宴の時の座開きに躍られるおめでたい踊り
です．

踊り手は紅白の貫花（ぬちばな）
を首にかけ
て登場します．貫花を両手にもったり、
片手にか
ざしたりして踊り、若い女性の弾むような浮き立
つ恋心を華やかに表現して躍ります．後半の速
い曲では四つ竹をカチカチならしながら躍りま
すが、今回は四つ竹なしの踊りを披露します．

4. 上り口説
薩摩の琉球侵攻後、
その支配下におかれる
ようになった琉球王国の役人が、首里城を出発
して、薩摩へ上る迄の船旅を口説で表現した古
典二才（ニーセー）踊りです．空手的なものを基
礎にしているのできびきびした男らしさの中に、
まろやかで品の有る踊りにすることに苦心する．

6. 鳩間節
躍動感溢れる若い男性の踊りで八重山群島
の鳩間島景観を表現した踊りです．若者が鳩間
島の丘に登りそこから見渡せる緑豊かな木々や
耕作地、遠くに浮かぶ稲や栗を積んだ洋上の
船の美しさを称え、豊穣を感謝します．

９．四つ竹踊り
祝儀舞踊、
お祝いの座開きの踊りにふさわし
く、悠長な曲にのって南国沖縄を象徴する花笠
を被り、紅型(びんがた）衣装を着けて、両手に
四つ竹を持ってカチカチと鳴らして踊ります．歌
詞は
「四つ竹を打ち鳴らしながら、今日こうして
晴れのお座敷に出て躍る事は本当に嬉しい」
と
いう意味です．

11．泡瀬の京太郎（チョンダラー）
京太郎は、室町次代(14世紀）頃に京都を中
心としたお祝いの芸が沖縄に伝わったもので
す．泡瀬の京太郎は、平成18年
（2006）、京太郎の泡瀬上演百周年記念祭
を泡瀬復興期成会主催で執り行われた．泡瀬
京太郎の出羽（イジファ）
そして４部立ての舞
踊、狂言(チョウジン）

1. Dance: Kagiyadefu Bushi
One of the most formal Okinawan
court dances, celebrates the spirit of longevity, the national welfare and an abundant harvest. It is now an indispensable
dance or music at the beginning of an
auspicious event or gathering. The words
to the poem upon which the dance is
based go” To what shall I compare my
heart that today overflows with joy? It is
a budding flower touched by the pearls
of morning dew.”

3. Dance: Nuchibana
This dance expresses the joy of a young
woman in love. For a classical dance,
the movements are relatively simple and
music comparatively cheerful. The dancer
appears on stage with a pair of red white
leis on her neck. The red flowers symbolize
the live of a young woman while the white
flowers represent purity and naivety.

4. Dance: Nubui Kuduchi
After Ryukyu had come under the domination of the southernmost Kyusyu province of Satsuma in 1609, members of the
Ryukyuan nobility were obliged to travel
frequently to Kagoshima, the Satsuma
capita, and to the Japanese capital of Edo
on political and official business. The text
of Nubui Kuduchi describes the journey
between Shuri, to the long sea voyage in
arrival at Kagoshima.

This is a young man’s dance, full of rhythm
and spirit, describes the beauty of Hatoma, an
outer island of the Yaeyama group. Climbing the hills of Hatoma, the man praise the
greentrees, bountiful grain and sailing ships
in the distance.

9. Yotsudake Odori
One of the most frequently presented
onna odori dances, Yotsutake is generally
performed by a large group of dancers
on festive occasions. The dancers hold
Yotsudake (bamboo castanets) and wear
brilliantly colored Kimono with traditional
Okinawan bingata designs. The headdress worn by the dancers, the hanagasa
or “flower hat”. Designed in the form of
a red flower decorated with blue waves,
has become the symbol of Okinawa. The
large number of dancers and their vivid
appearance make this one of the most visually captivating items in the repertoire.

11. Dance: Awase no Kyotaro
(Cyondara-)
Kyotaro is incorporated in “Kume
Odori”, traditional cultural treasure of
Okinawa, and folk theatrical public entertainers have adopted this odori extensively in their range of performances. It
is acknowledged that Kyotaro expresses
courses of changes in theatrical world
and, therefore, holds a very highly acclaimed position in it. Kyotaro of Awase
was designated an intangible folk cultural property by Okinawa Prefecture
in 1979.  In 2005, a national committee
was selected to undertake proper steps
to prepare and record Kyotaro. I am
grateful to “Awase Kyotaro Preservation
Organization” and its members for presenting their priceless video to Indiana
Okinawa Kenjinkai.

2008 INTERNATIONAL
FESTIVAL
The 2008 International festival event was themed
Sports, we knew that the main sport in Okinawa is Karate but didn’t realize there were a host of other sporting
events that are unique to Okinawa.
There were so many sports to showcase from, which
included Miyako Island’s Beach Volleyball & Strongmen
Race, Ishigaki Island’s Triathlon, Okinawa Island’s NPO
Tour de Okinawa, Naha Marathon, and the World Karate
Tournament.
The Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai performed Ryubu
(Okinawan dance), Eisa, and Karate within 30 minutes.
Speed and teamwork had to be met with the utmost
perfection. The official in charge praised all the performers for their perfect timing and speed.
The Award Ceremony took place on the third day of
the Festival. When we all heard that the Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai won first place for “quality”, we were all
truly surprised.
As the Indiana Okinawa Kenjinkai introduced Okinawa
to the International Festival, we hope it gives the next
generation and general public a better understanding of
different cultures and the Okinawan culture. n

THE BIRTH PLACE OF KARATE
Okinawa is the birthplace of karate.
Developed in the former Ryukyu Kingdom,
it spread from Okinawa to Japan and then to
the rest of the world and today has 50 million fans in more than 150 countries.
It all started in the 13th century, when
the indigenous martial art blended with
Chinese kung fu. Karate was strengthened following a policy banning weapons
declared in the early 1500’s and developed
mainly in today’s Naha City. In Shuri
there was Shuri-te, today’s Shorin-Ryu. In
Naha it was Naha-te, which later became
Goju-ryu. Tomari had Tomari-te. Other
styles such as Uechi-Ryu and Ryuei-Ryu
also emerged. Kobudo, or weaponry, was
also developed through the use of various
everyday tools. Among these are the staff,
the nunchaku and the sickle. In the early
1900’s the Chinese characters for the art
were changed to today’s characters meaning “empty hand,” as in having neither a
weapon nor a desire to fight.
Around 1920, karate was introduced
to mainland Japan by Okinawan masters,
and after WWII it spread around the world
to become the popular sport of today.
Karate is an inexhaustible art of self defense. With its main principle being “there
is no first attack in karate,” its ultimate
goal is the perfection of character through
training to the height of human potential
of mind, body and spirit. This is reached
through the practice of kata, or form and
physical conditioning, and the use of tools
derived from utensils of daily life such as
the water jug.
Okinawa is proud of its karate tradition,
which comes alive in the dragon boat races
and the Naha Festival every fall. Karate
movements also influenced eisa drums
and Ryukyuan dances. As the birthplace
of karate, Okinawa has many monuments
dedicated to the masters and more than 400
dojo, or gyms, where karate is passed down
from generation to generation. n
