But the owner answered, "Ah, this fellow is not for sale. He is my best friend. We can't live without each other."
Then the dog said, "That is true. Please don't sell me."
e The rich man spread one thousand dollars on the table.
Then the owner of the dog thought for a while and said, "H'm... The dog is yours."
The rich man was very happy and started to leave with the dog, but when they reached the door, the dog angrily
said these words:
"I thought you were my friend but you've sold me to a stranger! I'll never speak another word again!"

この「もう 1 人の男」というのは，イヌを連れた a ventriloquist（腹話術師）以外にもう 1 人，別の男がいた
ということ。

he was not so bright「彼はあまり頭がよくなかった」
not so ...は「それほど…ではない」という意味。
Ex. It isn't so cold today, is it?（今日はそれほど寒くないですよね？）

ある日，腹話術師が自分のイヌと一緒にレストランに入ってきた。彼はステーキを注文した。イヌが「僕
にもステーキを持ってきて」と言った時，ウェイターは非常に驚いた。
さて，同じテーブルにはもう 1 人の男がいた。その男はとても裕福だったが，あまり頭がよくなかった。
彼はナイフを落とし，イヌをじっと見た。まもなくして，ウェイターがイヌの飼い主の前に 1 枚のステー
キを置いた。そのあと，もう 1 枚のステーキをイヌのそばの床の上に置いた。彼らは食べ始めた。
そして，イヌの飼い主は，「ウェイター，ワインをグラス 1 杯持ってきてくれ」と言った。「僕には水を
グラス 1 杯持ってきて」とイヌが付け加えた。
彼らの周りの人は皆，この奇妙な光景を見ていた。「おい，どうか君のイヌを売ってくれないか」と，
金持ちの男が少し間を置いて言った。「こんなに利口な動物を見たことがない。」しかし，飼い主は，「い
や，こいつは売り物じゃない。彼は私の親友なんだ。我々はお互いなしでは暮らせないんだ」と答えた。
そしてイヌが，「その通り。どうか僕を売らないで」と言った。
金持ちの男はテーブルの上に 1,000 ドルを広げた。するとイヌの飼い主は少しの間考え，「ふむ…。その
イヌは君のものだ」と言った。金持ちの男はとても喜び，イヌと一緒に去りかけたが，彼らがドアまで来
るとイヌが怒ってこう言った。「君のことを友だちだと思っていたのに，知らない人に僕を売ったね！も
う僕は一言もしゃべらないよ！」
