動詞派生前置詞 Failing の文法化研究
(An analysis on the Grammaticalization of the Deverbal preposition
failing)

１. はじめに
本発表では、
動詞派生前置詞(deverbal prepositions)の 1 つである failing の考察を行う。
failing を研究対象になった動機及び目的は以下の通りである。
研究の動機
現在時点において failing に関する個別的な研究の量は十分ではないと判断したため。
研究の目的
他の動詞派生前置詞にはない failing の特異な統語的機能を解明すること。
特に failing- that
にいう連語に顕著な用法である「文中で前後の統語クラスを等位接続する機能」に焦点を
当
てる。
本発表の提案
上記のような特殊な用法をもつのは、failing が“that”や“this”のような指示詞を補語にし
たことで先行文脈を照応できるようになったことに起因すると主張する。
2. 動詞派生前置詞の先行研究
2.1. 歴史的な変化と再分析と脱範疇化
Kortman and König(1992)や Laurel and Traugott(2005)では、failing を含む動詞派生前
置詞における前置詞への再分析(reanalysis)及び脱範疇化(decategorialization)に関する要
因を歴史的な統語的変化の観点から以下のように指摘している。
動詞派生前置詞の歴史的な変化
・歴史的な語順変化の影響を受け、during, pending, failing, granted など一部の分詞が絶
対構文において VS 型の語順に限定されるようになったこと。
・分詞形(Kortman and König では converb)の主語との格・数・性の屈折変化の消去。
・根底的な統語的動詞項の補語への再分析。主節の主語と一致した「付加詞」なら直接目
的語が、
「絶対構文」なら主語が補語と分析される。

・懸垂分詞構文のコントローラーの消失、つまり主節と従属節における主語の不一致
2.2. 再分析と脱範疇化が及ぼす統語位置の緩和
具体的な例として、秋元 (2002,189-190) では concerning, considering, regarding,
relating to, touching の考察を踏まえ concerning に関し、再分析や脱範疇化により動詞派
生前置詞の統語位置が比較的自由になったことを説明している。
(1) a matter intimately concerning your friend.
(2) He made to me a communication concerning your friend.
(3) I will communicate with you concerning your friend.

(1)は a matter を修飾する現在分詞の解釈のみだが、(2)で communication が被修飾詞と
解釈されるか否かで現在分詞か前置詞かになるという曖昧性が生じる。 (3)では(2)の曖昧性
が解消され脱範疇化し前置詞の地位を確立する。最終的に統語位置の制限が緩和され、後
に(4)のように文頭に置くことができるようになる。
3. Failing の定義と用法
failing も以下の例のように、文頭に位置することが可能で従属節と主節の主語が不一致で
ある点で前述の動詞派生前置詞と同様な変化を経ていることが予測できる。
以下の failing NP の場合は in default of に意味が類似した条件的な用法となる。

failing that になると等位接続詞の用法を確立し、文頭だけでなく文中にも挿入され NP,
VP, PP などの統語クラスを等位接続する。これは他の動詞派生前置詞にはない特徴である。
意味用法も failing NP と異なり、先行する節や語で提示した方法が不可能な場合に続く節
や語で「代替案」を示す点で特異性を見せる。

failing that は各辞書や COCA や COHA などのコーパスで項目として登録され、補語が
NP のものより頻度が高い。COHA では 1845 年の John William Draper 作の A treatise on
the forces which produce the organization of plants からの引用が初出となっている。
4. 指示対象の範囲の拡大
4.1. That, This が及ぼす指示対象の拡大
早瀬(2015: 25)では“having said that”が話題進行や話題転換などの談話機能を取得し
た要因を that という指示対象の広範囲な関係詞を変数として編入し共起語や使用文脈の限
定が緩和されたことを要因としている。
同様に failing も文頭に位置している際に this や that を補部にしたことで先行の文や句
を前方照応し接続詞的な機能を発達させたことが考えられる。

failing this は 12 件中 8 件が条件文的な用法で 4 件がナラティブ的な用法で、文中に挿
入し統語クラスを等位接続させる用法は見つからなかった。これは this の指示対象が文レ

ベルに限定されることが要因として想定できる。

4.3. Failing that
failing that では前述のように等位接続する用法を 220 件と多数発見できた。これは this
との指示対象の範囲の違いが要因と考えるのが妥当である。

4.4. 本節のまとめ
failing that が等位接続機能を習得した要因として or, but, and などの等位接続詞との共
起頻度が増えこれらの意味機能を吸収した可能性が指摘できる。それを踏まえ以下の文法
化の経路を提案できる。これに関しては更なる調査が要する。
Failing の文法化の経路
ⅰ. 前置詞として再分析。
ⅱ. 文頭位置への生起可。1 と 2 は他の動詞派生前置詞と共通。
ⅲ. 指示詞、特に that との共起により先行文脈の指示可能になる。
ⅳ. or, that, this との共起及び意味機能の吸収。
ⅴ. 文以外に NP, VP, PP などの句レベルと共起可
5. 話者の主観的、対人的用法への変化
等位接続性が逆に緩くなり話者の主観的認識が反映したり、助言や命令・警告などを主
節に導入したりする用法も COCA で発見している。

６．結論
本発表をまとめると、動詞派生前置詞の failing は指示代名詞、特に that と共起すること
で大きく 2 つの用法を発達させたと考えることができる。
(11)～(16)のように文中における句レベルの等位接続詞的用法
(17)～(19)のように話者の主観を反映し助言や命令・警告など発話行為的用法。

7. 今後の展望
今回は failing のみを研究対象にしていたが、他の動詞派生前置詞との比較し更なる分析を
進め、動詞派生前置詞の研究へ貢献できるよう志したい。
