南部バプテスト歴史図書館を訪ねて 金丸 英子 現在の南部バプテスト歴史図書館（The Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives）は、１ ９ ３ ８年、南部パプテスト歴史協会（The Southern Baptist Historical Society）の一部門として創設された。当時の所在地はアメリカ・ケンタッキー州ル イビルのサザンバプテスト神学校の一角だったが、現在のテネシー州ナッシュビルへ の移転は、南部バプテスト連盟が自らの歴史部門をテネシー州に設置した１ ９ ５ １年に遡 る。その後、建物の改修や増築を経て、１ ９ ８ ５年以降、南部バプテスト連盟事務所４階 フロアーが図書館となっている。 ナッシュビルの空港からタクシーを２ ０分ほど走らせると、目的地の南部バプテスト 連盟事務所に着く。近くにはアメリカ有数のカントリー・ウェスタン・ミュージック の本場ナッシュビルのダウンタウンもあり、夕刻になるとその一帯は、カントリー・ ミュージックが流れ、世界中から集まってくる観光客で溢れる毎日である。そのよう な市内の中心に南部バプテスト連盟事務所がある。歴史図書館は、月曜日から金曜日 までの毎日、朝９時から午後４時まで開館している。ここには、世界各国のバプテス ト関係の資料に加えて、南部バプテスト連盟公文書（１ ９ ４ ８年∼１ ９ ９ ６年） 、２ ５， ０ ０ ０冊を 超える書籍、７ １， ０ ０ ０点以上のバプテスト地方連合・州連合・連盟の各定期総会議事録、 バプテスト地方連合や関係事業体の新聞、ビデオ、録音、写真、パンフレットがあり、 南部バプテスト歴史図書館 ■ １３ ■ 歴史資料のマイクロフィルムは１７， ０００リールを超える。マイクロフィルムには、黒 人バプテストに関する資料、各個教会の総会議事録、教会音楽関係資料、またバプ テストをテーマにした学位論文も含まれている。その他、１７世紀初頭の貴重文献も あり、その閲覧も許されている。 「特別リサーチコレクシ ョ ン（Special Research Collection） 」と呼ばれるものがあり、イングランド・バプテストの海外宣教協会関係 資料（１ ７ ９ ２年∼１ ９ １ ４年） 、ロシア並びに東ヨーロッパバプテスト関係の資料が収めら れている。 雑誌などの閲覧は飛び込みでも可能であるが、所蔵文献の閲覧は予約が必要となる。 資料の利用は研究や調査のために誰にでも開かれているが、最近では、資料によって はオンラインで閲覧もできるようになっている。複写は、図書館の許可があれば可能 である。また定まった金額を払えば、自前のデジタルカメラで資料の撮影も許されて いる。 図書館にはコピー機、マイクロフィルム映写機、マイクロフィルム用スキャナー、 リサーチルーム、視聴覚室、コンピュータが備えられており、リサーチの環境が整え られている。リサーチを始めるにあたり、学芸員が丁寧にオリエンテーションをして 助けてくれる。図書館司書は大変よく訓練されており、閲覧したい資料のテーマや人 名を言うと、図書館奥の書庫から必要なものをすべて取り出してきてくれる。それで 足らない時には、もう少し絞り込んだ情報を与えると、億劫がることなく何度も書庫 と閲覧室を往復して、利用者のリサーチを助けてくれるのがありがたい。リサーチで 疲れると、同じ階にあるブレークルームに行くことができる。無料のコーヒーと紅茶 が用意されており、スナックやソフトドリンクの自動販売機もある。 マイクロフィルムなど整った設備 ■ １４ ■ 西 南 学 院 に 縁 の 深 い 資 料 は、 「ド ー ジ ャ ー 家 資 料（Dozier Family Papers） 」と 「ジョージ・ワシントン・ボールデン資料（George Washington Bouldin Papers）」 であろう。各資料の内訳を記しておきたい。 １．ドージャー家資料 ドージャー家資料は１ ９ ９ ２年に寄贈されている。資料には、西南学院創立者チャール ズ・ケルシー・ドージャー、モード・バーク・ドージャー（C． K． ドージャー夫人） 、 エドウィン・バーク・ドージャー、マリー・エレン・ワィリー・ドージャー（E． B． ドージャー夫人）らの１ ９ ０ ４年から１ ９ ８ ０年の間の資料（原稿、講演、説教、詩、日記、 略歴資料、写真、私信、その他）が納められている。その他、アジア・バプテスト神 学大学院（Asian Baptist Graduate Theological Seminary） 、日本聖書協会、西南学 院大学、南部バプテスト宣教団、日本バプテスト連盟、日本キリスト教協議会などの 諸団体の関係資料、西南学院による C． K． ドージャーの生涯の映像「愛と剣と」もあ る。量は、日本サイズの段ボールの約１． ５倍の大きさの箱で５箱あり、その中にぎっ しりと詰め込まれている（写真参照） 。以下、箱番号に沿って収められている資料の 内訳を紹介する。 箱にぎっしり入ったドージャー関係の資料 ■ １５ ■ Box 1 １． １ Atomic Bomb − Aftermath １． ２ Articles, Writings − Dozier, Charles Kelsey １． ３ Articles, Writings −（Published）Dozier, Edwin Burke（EBD） １． ４ Articles, Writings − Dozier, Maude A. Dozier ２．ジョージ・ワシントン・ボールデン資料 西南学院第３代院長であり、１ ９ ０ ６年に C． K． ドージャーと一緒に来日したジョー ジ・ワシントン・ボールデンの資料は、幼少期から日本における宣教師活動に関係す るものが納められている。これらは、１ ９ ６ ７年、ボールデン夫人の希望で、ボールデン の甥の息子から歴史図書館に寄贈されている。所蔵資料は全部で２， １ １ ２点、ページに して約１ ０， ０ ０ ０ページに相当する分量で、規則により公開閲覧が可能となったのは、わ ずか１ ０数年前のことである。ドージャー家資料と同様、ボールデン資料も手紙、日記、 翻訳書（ボールデンは仏教の教義に関する本を英訳している） 、ギリシャ語、中国語、 日本語の各辞典、１ ０ ０枚に及ぶスライド、説教などが所蔵されている。興味深いのは、 手紙群の中に、公文書ばかりではなく、日本で教えた学生や日本人の友人・知人との 文通の手紙が大切に保管されていたことである。資料は箱番号にそって１ １箱に収めら れている。内訳は次のとおりである。 Box １ １． １ Correspondence and general information re : G.
