≪過去完了形のポイント≫
MIRANDA: Before today, you had never heard of me.
過去完了形は≪ had ＋過去分詞≫の形で表され、過去のある時点を基準にして、それより以前の
ことについて述べる場合に使われます。現在を基準にして、それより以前のことを述べる現在完了形
との違いを確認しておきましょう。
また、別れ際に使われる表現としては、次に挙げるものも参考になります。

“(It’s) Nice to meet you.”は初対面の挨拶ですが、冒頭の It’s を It was と過去形にし、to meet の部分
を meeting や to have met と変えると、会話を終えて別れる際の表現になります。

」と言っています。面接を受けているとき（現在の時点）は当然ミランダのことを知ってい
るわけですから、現在完了形ではなく、過去完了形を使っているのです。

≪別れ際に使える表現のポイント≫
ANDY: Thank you for your time.
別れ際に使える表現は様々です。親しい友人なら“Good bye!”や“See you.”だけでよいかもしれ
ませんが、就職面接など改まった場ではそうはいきません。面接終了後、日本語では「失礼します」など
と言って退室しますが、英語には部屋を出る際の「失礼します」に対応する表現はありませんので、相手
や場面によっていろいろと使い分けが必要です。
初対面の相手の場合、特に面接などで特別に時間を割いてもらった相手に対しては、映画で使われて
いたようなねぎらいの表現を入れ、
“I’m looking forward to meeting you again soon.”などと伝え
ると良いでしょう。スピーチやプレゼンテーションが終わった後の挨拶としては、
“Thank you for your
attention.”がよく使われます。

アメリカ大学生の就職活動
アメリカにおける大学生の就職活動は日本のものとは異なり、ある時期が来たら一斉に開始されるス
タイルではありません。3 年生のうちから就職を視野に入れてインターンシップを行う学生もいれば、
卒業後に本格的な活動を行う学生もいます。（映画の中では、アンディは、ノースウェスタン大学（イ
リノイ州）を卒業した後、ニューヨークに出てきて就職活動を行っていました。）
インターンシップとは、学生が一定期間企業等の中で研修生として働き、自分の将来に関連のある就
業体験を受けることができる制度ですが、アメリカの大学生の場合は、3 年生から 4 年生になる間の夏
休みを使ってインターンシップを体験することが多いようです。インターンシップは志望する業界や企
業で実際に働き、その上で目指している方向性や志望動機の確認を行う貴重な機会であり、また、イン
ターンシップからそのまま採用に繋げるケースもあるため、多くの学生が関心を持っています。
他にも、日本では、学生が企業説明会に出かけてゆく場合が一般的ですが、アメリカでは、定期的に
まとまった数の新卒採用を行っている大手企業の場合、企業がキャンパスへ出向いて、説明会や面接を
行ったりします。キャンパスでの面接終了後、学生は企業のオフィスへ出向き、2 次・3 次面接を受け
ることになります。
アメリカの大学の公式 HP にある career service のページや、フリー百科事典 Wikipedia 等で jobhunting や job interview を調べて、さらに詳しく調べて見ましょう。
