その珍しいホテルは，ボリビアの巨大な塩の砂漠に，ぽつんと建っている。その砂漠は，海抜およそ 3,700
メートルにあり，約 1 万 2,000 平方キロメートルの面積を持つ，おそらく世界最大の塩原だろう。遠い昔，
塩の砂漠は存在しなかったが，のちに海の底が隆起し，山脈が形成された。それで，大量の海水がその山
々に残された。それが湖を作った。そのあと，湖は干上がった。塩の砂漠が残されたのである。
塩のホテルはとても変わっている。ベッド，テーブル，いす，何もかもが塩のかたまりで作られている
のだ。電気はない。ホテルは太陽の自然の熱を利用している。昼の間は，太陽が塩のかたまりを温めてく
れ，それは夜になっても，部屋を暖かく快適に保ってくれるのである。
