The artists featured in the Print Show’ pioneers of the so-called‘ Creative Print ’movement, known as sō saku hanga . These works, characterized by individuality and freedom of expression, attracted the attention of Europeans and Americans who visited Japan and subsequently became serious collectors. The success of the first show established a firm foundation for the participation of well-known artists, enhancing the reputation of the show in Japan and overseas. At the same time, the proceeds of the Print Show, which is entirely managed by volunteers, became the main source of funds for CWAJ scholarships. Since 1972 CWAJ has awarded a wide range of scholarships annually, benefiting more than 800 individuals from 35 countries and nurturing future leaders around the world. ⑥ 60th Anniversary Grand Prize Exhibition 『還暦 ― 60年の軌跡』 The CWAJ Print Show, the largest exhibition and sale of hanga in Japan, is known for introducing contemporary Japanese prints to a sophisticated global audience. To celebrate its 60th anniversary, s landmark show will feature a special exhibition, this year ’ Kanreki: A 60-year Journey , which traces the history of the Print Show in approximately 160 prints by 134 invited artists, including two who participated in the first CWAJ Print Show. More than twenty artists will be exhibiting their early work along with their recent work. SHINODA Toko, who remains an active artist at the age of 103, will exhibit the first lithograph she produced in the s. These prestigious artworks will be displayed alongside 1950 ’ s 60th Print Show Anniversary the winning prints from this year’ Grand Prize Competition, which showcases works by young artists of age 40 and under.
