KAMAKURA Snow House Festival
Various events, such as Winter Fireworks on Feb. 1st, are
held during this festival. One of the most exciting events in the
“Yuki Akari” in which more than 800 mini Kamakura (snow
houses) are lit from inside feel the calm and spiritual winter
night at Oku-Nikko.

(Ohina-sama) of various types and from diﬀerent ages are

Fantasic snow scene during winter season. Hundreds of small snow houses (mini-kamakura) are built and lighted up by candle

Junmai-Shu is made from rice, rice koji and water. No alcohol added. Junmai-shu
usually tends to have a stronger and richer taste than other types of Sake.

Girls' Festival.

set of dolls called
Hina-Ningyo doll

cerebrate the growth of the family's
girls. In Kinugawa hot spring town, we
display Hina dolls at the participating
Ryokans and Hotels. Some privileges are
oﬀered to female guests. Why not
challenge a stamp rally visiting the dolls
and get a prize?

What is "Otoso"?
Otoso is a medicinal liquor drunk
during the New Year holidays to
drive away ill fortune and wish for
longevity.
Otoso is flavored with several herbs
such as Chinese bellflower,
mandarin peel, cinnamon and
others.
Yukata, Tanzen and Haori
The yukata is a cotton kimono wore
while sleeping or relaxing. It can also
be worn on short excursions outside the
ryokan as well. Tanzen (padded
kimono) or haori (kimono coat) are
worn over the yukata.
Wear wooden thongs (geta) or sandals
when you go out in your yukata.
What is "Ozoni"?
Japanese bath etiquette
When using Japanese bath, it is the custom to
first rinse yourself before entering the pool.
After getting nice and warm, return to the
spigots and wash yourself, using the soap and
shampoo.
After rinsing, return to the pool for that final
relaxing soak. It is custom not to wash again
your body.
Ozoni is a soup cooked with rice
cakes, vegetables and other
ingredients served during the New
Year holidays.
