Yushima Tenjin Ume Matsuri, Japanese Apricot Blossom Festival at Yushima Tenjin Shrine,
Bunkyo-ku. Nodate (an open-air tea ceremony) is held from 11 am on Mar. 1st and 8th. A tea
ticket is \500. Taiko (Japanese drumming) and other entertainments are scheduled for every
Saturday and Sunday during the festival period.

Edo Nagashibina is an event of floating paper dolls near Shinsui Terrace of Azumabashi Bridge on
the Sumida River, wishing safety and good health of children. Nagashi-bina starts at 11:30 am and
ends around 1 pm. Anyone who purchases a floating paper doll (\800) at this site is able to take
part in this event.

Jindaiji Daruma Ichi, Dharma Doll Fair at Jindaiji Temple, Chofu in the suburbs of Tokyo. About
300 stalls selling Dharma dolls, temple charms, trinkets and so on are set up on the approach to
the temple from 9 am to around 5 pm on both days.

Hi-watari-Sai, rigorous religious practice of walking on burnt charcoals at Takaosan Yakuoin
Temple, Hachioji on the outskirts of Tokyo. Following the lighting ceremony, Yamabushi (mountain
priests) walk barefoot on the burning embers from 1 pm. This is believed to drive away the sins
and filth of the world. Anyone may participate in this practice toward the end of the event.

Ueno Sakura Matsuri, Cherry Blossom Festival at Ueno Park, Taito-ku. People can enjoy viewing
about 800 cherry trees in bloom even in the evening, as thousands of Bonbori (paper lanterns) are
lit up from 5:30 pm to 8 pm. Some events are scheduled around Shinobazu-no-ike Pond in the
park daily during the period.

Yudate-no-Shishi-mai, Lion Dance of Suwa Shrine, Hakone-machi, Ashigara-Shimo-gun,
Kanagawa Pref., from 1 pm to 3:30 pm. One of Shishimai lion dances, Kama-Meguri-no-mai is
distinguished for its dance by splashing hot water with bamboo leaves over visitors. It is said that
people getting splashed water is a sign to bless good health for the year.

Hote Matsuri Festival at Shiogama Shrine, Shiogama, Miyagi Pref. This is the festival of fire
prevention and has a 300-year history. A parade of a gigantic Mikoshi (portable shrine, weighing 1
ton) carried by sixteen young men accompanied by about 500 people and children in traditional
attires, departs from the Shrine at 12 noon, marching through the city, and returns at 8 pm.

Wakasa-no-Omizu-okuri, an offering sacred water ritual at Wakasa Jinguji Temple, Obama, Fukui
Pref. The rituals including bothYumiuchi (Japanese archery shooting) and Dattan (priests brandish
burning torchlights) to exorcise evil spirits, are conducted from 1 pm to 7 pm. The highlight of the
rites is Taimatsu Gyoretsu (torchlight procession) which leaves Jinguji Temple at around 7:30 pm
for the place called "Unose", where Omizu-okuri ritual (the priest pours the sacred water into the
Onyu River) takes place from 8:30 pm to 9 pm. It is believed that the water from Unose reaches
the Wakasa-i (well) on the grounds of Todaiji Temple in Nara, 10 days later on Mar. 12th, when
Omizu-tori (Sacred Water-drawing Ritual) in Nara is held.

Hadaka-Oshiai Matsuri, Naked Festival at Bishamondo of Urasa Fukoji Temple, Minami-Uonuma,
Niigata Pref. The festival with a 1,200-year history is to pray for a rich harvest of the year, and is
designated as one of the National Important Intangible Folk Properties. The highlight of this
festival is Hadaka-Oshiai in which about 500 young men only in loincloths purify themselves in the
cold water, and then jostle each other to the advantage of getting Kifuda (wooden tablets of prize
coupons) in Bishamondo Hall, several times from 6 pm to around 11 pm.

torchlights and a fireworks display from around 8:40 pm to 9 pm. Some other events, such as a
Mikoshi parade and Japanese drumming are scheduled from 6 pm to 9 pm.

they begin to bloom usually from the middle of January. Various entertainments are scheduled
during the period. The garden is open from 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission is \300.

Kawazu-zakura Matsuri, Cherry Blossom Festival in Kawazu, Kamo-gun, Shizuoka Pref. Rich pink
blossoms are distinctive of Kawazu-zakura which come into bloom in February. One could enjoy
seeing the cherry blossoms along the Kawazu River, even at night until 9 pm, since the blossoms
are lit up daily during the period.

Fujimori no Ta-asobi, Oi Hachimangu Shrine, Yaizu, Shizuoka Pref. This is the festival to pray for
the bumper crop of the year, and is designated as one of the National Important Intangible Folk
Cultural Properties. Parishioners perform 25 different Kagura (Shinto dance) of the process of
rice cultivation, to the tune of Japanese flute and drum from 6 pm to 11 pm.

Shuni-e or Omizu-tori, Sacred Water-drawing Festival, at Nigatsu-do, Todaiji Temple, Nara, Nara
Pref. The ritual Omizu-tori in which the monks draw water from the Wakasa-i (well) to dedicate to
the Buddha is held in the flickering light of pine torches at 2 am on the 13th. The festival with
over a 1,260-year history is also called Otaimatsu (Torchlight Festival), and symbolizes the arrival
of spring. The rites Otaimatsu are conducted by young ascetics with the torchlights from around
7 pm for 20 min. (from 7:30 pm for 45 min. on the 12th, and from 6:30 pm for 10 min. on the 14th)
daily during the period. The ascetic monks brandish huge burning pine torches to produce a
shower of sparks on the balcony of the Nigatsu-do temple. As sparks are believed to have magic
power against evils, devout people make a rush to catch them.

Sagicho Matsuri Festival, at Himure Hachiman-gu Shrine, Omi-Hachiman, Shiga Pref. Thirteen
Sagicho , floats beautifully bedecked with foods and grains, are carried through the city by men in
disguise with women's dresses and makeup from 2 pm to around 5:30 pm on the 14th. On the
15th, after parading through the city, all the floats are gathered in the precincts of the Shrine, and
are burnt out one after another at the signal of fireworks let off, from around 8 pm to 10:40 pm.

The JR Tokaido Line to Omi-Hachiman Sta. (North Exit), and then walk 30 min., or temporary buses to the site are
operated;　10 am-5 pm on the 14th, 10 am-10 pm on the 15th.

Yakushiji Shuni-e Hana-e-shiki, Flower Offering Ceremony at Yakushiji Temple, Nara, Nara Pref.
This festival symbolizes the arrival of spring, and is to pray for the prosperous world. The interior
of the temple's main hall is lavishly decorated with a variety of flowers. Various events are
scheduled such as Taiko (Japanese traditional drumming) from 1 pm on the 26th, Noh (traditional
masked-drama) performance from 1 pm on the 27th, Chigo-Gyoretsu (a procession of children in
fancy attire) from 1 pm on the 28th and 29th, and Oni-oi-shiki (rites to dispel the five rampaging
devils) from around 8:30 pm on the 31st.

Yanagawa Hina Matsuri Sagemon Meguri, or Girl's Festival of Yanagawa, Fukuoka Pref. Sagemon
are handsewn ornaments which are displayed all over the city for this festival. When a baby girl is
born, her mother and grandmothers sew Sagemon stitch by stitch, wishing her to grow up healthy,
and decorate them at both sides of Hina dolls to celebrate her first Girl's Festival. On Feb. 11th, a
procession of girls and adults in traditional Hina doll attire, and floats adorned with colorful
Sagemon , takes place from 10 am. On Mar. 16th, a parade of girls and adults dressed in Hina doll
costumes sitting on the boats sails through the canals bedecked with Sagemon from 11 am to
12:20 pm. On Apr. 3rd, a ceremony of Nagashibina (floating paper dolls) on a boat starts from 11
am to 11:30 am. Many more events are scheduled during the period.

Tenryo Hita Ohina-Matsuri, or Girl's Festival of Hita, Oita Pref. The Hita area prospered under the
reign of Tenryo (Tokugawa Shogunate dependency) in the time of the Edo era. Hina Ningyo or
traditional Japanese dolls which have been handed down for generations, have been well preserved,
and are displayed at about 20 houses in the city, where everybody can visit and enjoy to view from
around 9 am to 4 pm daily, and many more events are scheduled during the festival period.
