(A) 今日，タンザニアの平均的な一人の市民が放出するのにほぼ一年かかる炭素の量と同
じ量の炭素を，ヨーロッパ人は一人あたり 2 日半ごとに，あるいはアメリカ人は一人あ
たり 28 時間ごとにいとも簡単に放出している。要するに，私たち先進国の人間が現在
のような生活を送れるのは，私たちが地球上の先進国以外に暮らす人間の大部分の数百
倍の割合で資源を使っているからである。
(B) 生理的なレベルでは，ユーモアは刺激に対する無意識の反応にすぎない。すなわち，
笑いである。私たちは他人に会って，礼儀正しくしなければならないと感じる場合に笑
う真似をすることはできるが，真の笑いは自然にわき起こるものである。それは私たち
の思いのままにできるものではないのである。

I believe that in the future a large number of jobs which are now done by humans
will be performed by robots. As a result, many workers will lose their jobs and
unemployment will become a serious issue. Therefore, it will be necessary for
governments to pass a law which requires business organizations, especially
manufacturers, to employ a certain number of workers according to such criteria as
corporate size and total sales.

(A) You may sometimes squash, without much consideration, a small ant crawling
right in front of you. Before you do that, however, remember that the ant has billions
of years of history behind it and that such a long period of biological time has made it
possible for the ant to be where it is now. Then you will probably become reluctant to
step on the little creature.
(B)
(イ) Any work of art has a creator and a receiver. Then why do people create artworks
in the first place? And why do they eagerly receive them? In one way or another, any
piece of art is impossible, not just for its receiver but also for its creator, to
understand. Artists manage to produce things which elude even their own
comprehension. Indeed, those things are not unnecessary extras; it appears that in
their elusiveness lie the power and soul of artistic activities.
(ロ) However, if you do not stop there and instead take the idea a step further and
consider what those “facts from the past” really are, you will realize that it is not as
easy to grasp them as you may have imagined.
