What is the TOEIC-SW Test?:
As opportunities for using English are growing in both business and daily-life situations, the
need for English communication skills, especially for speaking and writing is on the rise. The
TOEIC-SW Test evaluates your ability to speak and write in the workplace. Some of you may
take this test in September or later, so today we are going to take some time to prepare for
it. We will be focusing on the speaking part of the test. We hope this will give you some idea
what the TOEIC-SW test is like.
How we will do the tasks today:
The TOEIC-SW Test is a computer-based test; you take the test by yourself, and all the
material and information, such as directions, texts and pictures, are provided on the
computer. However, we will do the tasks today without the computer. Instead, we will do
them using the Leader Method. Each group leader will guide you through the group-work
and pair-work tasks. Let’s take a look at the Agenda.
i
After the teacher hands over to you:
Task 1: “Reading out a text aloud”
Leader: Let’s move on to the first task of the test. In this task, we are asked to read a passage aloud.
(Name), please read the directions.
Directions: In this part of the test, you will read the text aloud. You will have 45 seconds
to prepare. Then you will have 45 seconds to read the text aloud.(ディレクション:この問題では
テキストを音読します。準備時間は 45 秒です。指示の後、45 秒間で表示されたテキストを音読してください。)
Leader: In this task, we must read the text with proper pronunciation(発音), stress(強勢)and intonation
(抑揚). In the real test, the text will appear on the screen, but today it’s in the “reading passage” box
below. Now we will work in our group. Let’s take turns reading the text aloud. Each person will read it out
loud once. After each of us has read it, we will comment on each other’s performance. Let’s start.
Reading passage:
If you’re shopping, sightseeing and running around every minute, your vacation can seem
like hard work. To avoid vacation stress, come to the Blue Valley Inn on beautiful Lake
Meed. While staying at our inn, you’ll breathe clean country air as you view spectacular
sights. With its spacious rooms, swimming pool, and many outdoor activities, the Inn is the
perfect place for a vacation you won’t forget.
Task 2: “Describing a picture”
Leader: Now let’s move on to the next topic. (Name), please read the following directions.
Directions: In this part of the test, you will describe the picture in as much detail as you
can. You will have 30 seconds to prepare your response. Then you will have 45 seconds to
speak about the picture. (Choose one of the four pictures on the next page.)(ディレクション:
この問題では、表示された写真を、できるだけ詳しく描写してください。準備時間は 30 秒です。指示があったら 45 秒間で
写真を描写してください。写真は次のページの4枚から1枚を選んでください。)
Leader: Now we are going to describe a picture. We must give a detailed description with a story. Let’s
work in pairs. First, Student A will choose one of the four pictures below and prepare for 30 seconds.
Student B will time the 30 seconds. (Say “Start” and “Stop.”) Then Student A will describe the picture, and
Student B will time the 45 seconds. Switch roles and Student B will describe a different picture as Student
A keeps the time. When you are finished, please comment on your partner’s performance in English if you
can. If not, you can use Japanese. Let’s start!

Leader: Let’s work in pairs for this task. Student A will read the introduction and ask Students B the three
questions. As Students B answers the questions, Students A will time the 15 seconds for Questions 1 and
2, and the 30 seconds for Question 3. Switch roles and Student B will read the introduction and ask
Students A the three questions as Student B keeps the time. When you are finished, please comment on
your partner’s performance. Let’s start!

question, begin responding immediately after you are asked the question. No preparation time
