This is the podcast for lesson 9 of our series: "Ten-Minute English" ー「10分で英語」, for
intermediate level learners of English.
My name is Tom, and I am here with Takako!

今回のレッスンでは、「付加疑問文」について学びます。「She’s coming tonight, isn’t
she?」（彼女、今晩来るよね？）のように、相手に同意を求めて確認をするときに使います。これ
から、「ルームメート」というダイアログを聞いていただきます。このレッスンは、英語中級レベル
の方を対象としております。
次のダイアログを聞いて見ましょう。。。

“The Flatmates”
ルームメート
Voiceover:
James and Alex are complaining about their flatmate, Rodney, who has gone out for the
afternoon.
James:
You know, Alex, Rodney always leaves such a mess in the flat, doesn’t he?
Alex:
Yes, he does! He really can’t keep things clean, can he?
James:
No, he can’t! I’m always clearing up after him. And he drinks all my beer right after I
buy some.
There isn’t any beer left in the fridge, is there?
Alex:
(Looking in the fridge.) No there isn’t. You’ve told him about this before, haven’t you?
James:
Yes, I’ve told him a million times! He really gets my goat! He never listens, does he?
Alex:
That’s true – he never does! What shall we do about it? It’s really going too far.
James:

We should ask him to go find another place, shouldn’t we?
Alex:
Hold on, hold on… That’s going a bit too far. Let’s just have a serious talk with him first,
shall we?
James:
Yes, okay, let’s do that.

文法
Takako:
このレッスンでは、「付加疑問文」について勉強します。
「付加疑問」とは、「～ですよね」と、相手に念を押したり、相手の同意を求めたりするときに用い
る表現です。
ベースとなる文が肯定文の場合は、文章の後に、「コンマ + 否定疑問文」を付けます。
ダイアログの例を、聞いてみましょう。
Tom:
"Rodney always leaves such a mess in the flat, doesn’t he?"
Takako:
「ロドニーはいつも部屋を散らかすよな」という意味です。
反対に、ベースとなる文が否定分の場合は、「コンマ + 肯定疑問文」を付けます。
Tom:
"There isn’t any beer left in the fridge, is there?"
"He never listens, does he?"
Takako:
「冷蔵庫にビール、一つも残ってないよね」、「本当に人が言うことは聞かないだろ」という意味で
すね。2番目の文章は、否定を表す never があるので、「does he?」が付きます。
相手に同意を求める場合は、文尾を下がり調子で言います。
Tom:
"Rodney always leaves such a mess in the flat, doesn’t he?"
Takako:
相手に質問する場合は、文尾を上がり調子で言います。
Tom:
"There isn’t any beer left in the fridge, is there?"
