Most of the research is related to ways of improving energy efficiency in buildings. Determining building thermal loads more accurately requires developing, maintaining and using improved weather and climate databases, including detailed observations of solar radiation. Efficient climate control includes research into the use of PCMs to store heat energy. Energy efficiency research monitors energy use in detail to find wasteful practices. Mist evaporation cooling research is underway to cool large factory spaces, and determine the physiological response to such cooling. Building material research includes evaluation of retro-reflective panels to improve building albedo and reduce cooling loads without reflecting sunlight onto neighboring structures.
