We have synthesized new skutterudite compounds, which are typical materials with a cage–like structure, and investigate their crystallographic, transport, thermoelectric properties in order to elucidate the mechanism of thermal conductivity reduction by local anharmonic phonons (rattling effect). We report some experimental evidences about rattling motion in skutterudite compounds and discuss the mechanism.
