Recommended things to do at Hokkaido shrine (北海道神宮):
 Buy omikuji, a fortune-telling slip. You can sometimes buy one that’s stuffed in a ceramic animal (probably
monkeys in 2016). You want one that says 大吉! Anything with 凶 is bad. Tie those on the trees.
 Buy the limited edition monkey-shaped ceramic bell as a souvenir.
 Purify yourself like a Japanese.
Before entering the shrine, you should wash your hands at the fountain. Take the ladle in your right hand
and fill it with water from the spout. Wash your left hand first, then the right.
Optional: pour some water into one cupped hand and rinse your mouth. Do not drink directly from the
ladle! Spit the water in the drain on the ground.
Use the remaining water to rinse the ladle (watch how others do it).
 Pray like a Japanese.
At the altar: throw a coin into the box (¥5 or ¥10 is fine). Ring the bell (if there is one). Bow twice. Clap
twice. Pray. Bow once.

 Make or design your own cookie! Reservations required; I can help with it if you want. (30 - 80 minutes)
 Look at how the cookies are made.

Between 4:30pm - 6pm: walk around the illuminated garden
 Buy souvenir! You can also buy the same things at the airport though so unless you won’t have time, don’t
buy them at the park.

The shop doesn’t have information for holidays online, but they usually stick a little note
on their door, so you’ll have to check to see if they’re open that day. Luckily, they’re pretty
close to the hotel!
