327 international students from 40 countries are currently studying at
Kanazawa University. We interviewed six of them who are enjoying their
campus life and favorable circumstances for studying. They told us about their
stay in Kanazawa as well as their dreams for the future.
金沢大学には、現在、40の国と地域から訪れた留学生327人が学んでいます。恵まれた環境で充実の
キャンパスライフを送る6名の外国人留学生の皆さんに、金沢での暮らしや将来の夢などを聞きました。

The photo shows a lacquered tea caddy (Wajima
lacquerware) decorated by the fine technique of sunken

I have been studying neural networks that
control computers like a human brain, in
particular, the safety of code languages used
in computers. One of the reasons I came here
is that I have been practicing kendo since I
was 15 years old, and wanted to study it in
Japan. After studying Japanese at a private
university in Tokyo for one year, I entered
Kanazawa University to study cutting-edge
neural network technology.
The staff members of the International
Student Center are very kind. They answer
my questions promptly and give me advice
on how to get credits, so I can concentrate
on my studies without having to worry about
anything. I joined the kendo club and made
many Japanese friends with whom I often
go out to eat. In addition to studying, I have
been enjoying life in Kanazawa.
現在、コンピュータを人間の脳のように操作する技術である「ニュー
ラルネットワーク」を研究し、特に、コンピュータで使われる暗号の安
全性を調べています。15 歳のときから続けている剣道を本場で勉強した
いという気持ちもあって、まず首都圏の私立大学で 1 年間、日本語を学
んだ後、最先端のニューラルネットワークの技術が専攻できる金沢大学
に入学しました。
金沢大学のスタッフはとても親切です。質問にすぐ答えてくれ、単位
のとり方なども教えてくれるから、安心して勉強に打ち込めます。剣道
部に入ったので、日本人の友達もすごく増え、皆でご飯を食べに行くこ
ともしばしば。研究だけでなく、毎日の暮らしも充実して、とても楽し
く過ごしていますよ。

If you are wondering if you should study
abroad, I think the best thing to do is
to tr y the short program provided by
Kanazawa University. This program made
me like Kanazawa University. I took part
in traditional Japanese cultural activities,
such as tea ceremony and wearing a kimono,
in addition to learning Japanese. These
experiences made such a strong impression
on me and were so unforgettable that I
decided to study in Japan again.
I will be a Japanese teacher in Thailand
after completion of the course. Thailand and
Japan have a deep economic relationship and
many high school students learn Japanese
as a second language. An awareness of the
Japanese regional climate and culture will
help me to teach my students convincingly.
Now I go to tea ceremony lessons once
a week. I can sit in seiza and drink bitter
macha tea with no problem.
留学で迷っている人には、金沢大学の短期留学プログラムが一番いい
と思います。私が、金沢大学を好きになったのも、このプログラムがきっ
かけでした。1 年間に、日本語はもちろん茶道や着物などの伝統文化に
も触れることができ、心から感動しました。その体験が忘れられず、再度、
留学することにしたのです。
卒業後は、タイで日本語教師になるつもりです。タイと日本は経済関
係が深く、高校の第二外国語で日本語という生徒も少なくありません。
日本語を教える際、言葉がはぐくまれた風土や文化を知っているかどう
かで説得力が違ってくると思います。だからと言うわけではありません
が、
毎週、
茶道教室に通っています。もう正座も、
抹茶の苦さも平気ですよ。

A worry-free environment for international students
安心して生活できるのがうれしい。
Since I got married in Februar y 2005
and my daughter was born last October,
I am happy to have been able to move
into Ishikawa International House. We
rent a unit for a couple, consisting of a
living room, a bedroom, a kitchen and a
washroom for around 40 thousand yen, so
I can concentrate on my research without
worrying about money.

Baseball in Kanazawa changed my life!
野球との出会いが人生を変えた！
were. I entered Kanazawa University to
study dust-collecting filter technology that
might help solve environmental problems in
China. After I came to Japan, I realized that
Chinese air pollution affects the Japanese
environment. I will finish the third year
course next March, but I like Kanazawa so
much that I want to prolong my research
beyond that time.
2005年2月に結婚して、
10月に娘が生まれた私にとってうれしいのは、
石川県留学生交流会館に安い家賃で入居できることです。リビング、寝
室、キッチン、トイレのある夫婦用の部屋を 4 万円程度で借りられるので、
お金をあまり気にせず研究に集中できます。
金沢に来てまず驚いたのは、水も空気もキレイなことです。中国では、
工場の廃水処理が未整備で、環境問題に取り組むため、集じんフィルター
の技術が学べる金沢大学を選びました。来日し、中国の大気汚染が日本
にも影響を与えるなど、母国の知らなかった一面を知ることができまし
た。来年 3 月に修了の予定ですが、研究をさらに延長したいと思うほど、
金沢が好きになりました。

From Thailand
I came from the University of Pune, India,
which has an exchange agreement with
Kanazawa University. I majored in computer
science, but when I first came to Kanazawa
for the short program, I became fascinated
with baseball, so I decided to come back
to Kanazawa to the sport. What makes
me fascinated with baseball is the Japanese
people’s unique cheering style for their
favorite teams. The sight of the audience
joining together as one to cheer is an exciting
aspect of Japanese culture. Naturally, I myself
enjoy baseball as a member of a baseball
team. Kanazawa University boasts a high
level of academic studies and well-appointed
facilities. Kanazawa is the ideal place for
students who want to study Japanese because
it is neither too big nor too small and a good
place to live.
金沢大学と交流協定を結ぶプネー大学から来ました。専攻はコンピュー
タサイエンスでしたが、最初の短期留学プログラムで訪れた際に出会っ
た野球に強くひかれ、野球を研究テーマに再留学を決めました。
何がそんなに興味深いかと言うと、野球を盛り上げるあの独特の応援
です。球場に詰めかけた観衆が一体となって応援する風景は、日本なら
ではのエキサイティングな文化。もちろん、自分自身も野球サークルで
プレーを楽しんでいます。
金沢大学のよさは、学問レベルの高さと充実した設備です。特に、日
本語を勉強したいという学生には最適です。街の規模も大きくも小さく
もなく、とても住みやすいところだと思います。

A calm atmosphere suitable for studying
自然が豊かで落ち着いて勉強できます。
I am from Seoul and have studied at a
Japanese language school in Tokyo. From
that experience I can say that it is easier to
study calmly in Kanazawa than in Tokyo or
Seoul. The Asanogawa River, which flows
gently near my apartment, is calming and
refreshing.
Japan and Korea are in a difficult
situation due to historical problems. I also
had a bad prejudice about Japan before
coming here. However, after I came to
Kanazawa University and associated with
people on an individual basis, my image of
Japan changed drastically. In the future I
would like to work in an organization such
as a think-tank, and help us to understand
each other through economic and cultural
exchanges between our countries.

As a Japan hand, I recommend Kanazawa.
金沢は日本通の僕がお薦めのまち。
I am a Japan hand. It was 10 years ago
that I came to Japan for the first time.
Subsequently, I came to Japan on business
and on holiday several times. I have visited
various cities in Japan, and recommend
Kanazawa as the best city to visit. Kanazawa
still retains the flavor of old Japan, and
is a city that has produced many writers,
including three great ones. Kanazawa also
has wonderful culture, including traditional
handicrafts.
Streets with old houses, such as a
t e a h o u s e s tr e e t a n d a n o l d s a mur a i
residential area attract visitors, who enjoy
strolling there on their days off. And there
are no worries about food. You can have
food from all over the world at various kinds
of restaurants, such as Italian and Chinese.
The cost of living is lower than in big cities
such as Tokyo. You are sure to realize why
Kanazawa and Kanazawa University are such
great places if you come and see for yourself.
こう見えても僕は日本通なんです。日本に初めて来たのは母と旅行し
た 10 歳の時。その後も、仕事や旅行で何度も訪れています。いろんな街
を見てきた僕がお薦めするのは、
やっぱり金沢です。古きよき日本が残り、
三文豪をはじめ多くの作家を輩出し、伝統工芸などの素晴らしい文化が
あるからです。
それに古い建物の残る街並みがすてきです。情緒たっぷりの茶屋街や
武家屋敷などがあり、休日のお気に入りは散歩。食べ物の心配もありま
せん。イタリアンや中華料理など世界の料理が食べられ、生活費が東京
などに比べ安いのもうれしいですね。金沢と金沢大学のよさは、来てみ
れば絶対にわかります。

私の実家はソウルで、以前、東京の日本語学校で学んだこともありま
す。その経験から言えるのは、東京やソウルのような大都会より、自然
環境に恵まれた金沢の方が落ち着いて勉強できるということです。アパー
トの近くを流れる浅野川はとても穏やかで、安らぎと潤いを感じます。
歴史問題をめぐり、韓国と日本は難しい関係にあると言われます。私
も最初は悪い先入観を持っていました。しかし、金沢大学に来て個人と
個人で触れあう中で、イメージが大きく変わりました。将来はシンクタ
ンクのような機関で働き、両国の経済や文化交流の促進を通して、相互
理解を深めるお手伝いができればと思っています。

and Health Sciences were newly established to combine
medical, pharmaceutical and healthcare subjects, which were
taught separately in the previous system, in order to provide
collaborative education. We aim to train professionals of these
three fields who can contribute to humanistic, patient-centered
medicine.

all over the world. Our school covers a
wide range of fields such as psychology,
field culture, human science, historical
culture and linguistic culture.
A flexible curriculum
with many courses,
majors and sub-majors
to choose from
We have established five courses
consisting of fifteen majors for the
purpose of training generalists with a
comprehensive, interdisciplinary point
of view. Students choose a course and
a major after one year of study. For
their benefit, the sub-major system has
been introduced to expand the range
of choices. This means that students
can select sub-majors according to their
research interests and plans for the
future.

The School of Economics responds
to diverse, complex problems in
different regions and countries, and
in international society, from the
viewpoints of (1) economical theories
and policies, (2) business administration

「経済学類」は、地域から国、国際社会に至るまで細

の比較考察という３つの側面から捉え、対応する３つ

We perceive nature as a natural system
composed of organisms, human
beings, materials and earth. Based
on this concept, we study nature on a
large, spacial scale—from nano-scale
activities of organisms, materials, and
energy, which influence each other, to

学校教育法及び薬剤師法が改正され、2006年度より

あり、従来型の４年制学科の併置も認められました。

such as basic medicine are taught

finish the Master’s course move on
to the Doctoral Course (four-year)
with four divisions, and acquire even
higher-level specialized knowledge,
which prepares them for working in
cutting-edge research in the field of
Life Medical Science.
In addition, the Doctoral Course
is provided with a Health Science
Division consisting of a two-year
Master’s Preliminary Level program
and a three-year Doctor’s Higher
Level program — we aim to turn out

The Graduate School of Socio environmental Studies (Master’s
Preliminary Level), which reorganizes
and integrates the Graduate School
of Socio-environmental Science,
the Graduate School of Letters, the
Graduate School of Law and the
Graduate School of Economics,
was established in 2006. It consists
o f thre e p ro g r a m s : th e Pu b l i c
Administration and Policy Program,
which trains students to become
highly capable professionals who can
work for municipal governments,
enterprises or NPOs; the Social
Systems Program, which conducts
research on the social environment,
i.e. the family, community, etc. which
surround an individual; the Human
Culture Program, where students
learn about the environment as it
relates to cultural pursuits such as
language, ideas, religion and the
arts. In order to thoroughly grasp
the drastic changes to our cultural
environment brought about by the
spread of information technolog y,
and the great changes to our social
environment brought about by our
aging population and low birthrate,
we amalg amated the fields of
literature, law and economics, and
while researching the various issues
related to individuals and groups, we
are also carrying out experiments to
grasp society from as many angles as
possible, based on methods from the
humanities and sociology.
In addition, we are implementing
changes that will make the outlook of
our graduates more interdisciplinary
and integrated. These changes include
an increase in the number of twocredit subjects and introduction of
a semester system whereby students

合した、人間社会環境研究科（博士前期課程）を
2006 年に開設しました。自治体や企業、NPO など

IT（情報技術）の普及などで激変する文化環境、
少子高齢化が進み大きく変ぼうを遂げつつある社会

集団をめぐる諸問題について研究する一方、人文・
社会科学の手法をもとに社会をできるだけ多角的に
とらえる試みも行っています。
また、2 単位の授業科目を増やして学期ごとに単
位を認定するセメスター制や複数指導教員制を導入
し、学生の学際性・総合性を高めるための工夫を図っ

This school trains lawyers who have
the ability to resolve legal conflicts
appropriately and rapidly, and the
modulating capacity to prevent
conflict. After learning the basics
of law through repetitive learning,
students gain valuable experience
working for a lawyer, and use that
experience to carr y out c yclical
learning. They develop not only
knowledge but also a deep insight
into society and individuals. After
completion of the course, students are
granted the degree of Doctor of Law
(professional), and become qualified
to take the bar examination.

It is possible to be admitted as a non-degree student to a faculty or a graduate
school of the University in order to study a specific topic of research. Applicants
should contact the University before admission to decide on an academic
advisor* for their research topics.
Most of the graduate schools advise international students to register as a
research student before enrolling as a degree student. Research students are not
entitled to receive a degree upon completion of a program.
Admission procedures and requirements may differ depending on the

The Kanazawa University Student Exchange Program is a special one-year
program that provides Japanese language classes, as well as lectures in English
on the state of affairs in Japan, Japanese culture, and other various fields of
specialty, for students from overseas affiliated universities. Students who wish to
take other subjects that are offered to regular students at Kanazawa University
in addition to the course program may be allowed to take them, depending
on their choice of subject and Japanese language level. This program is for selfsupported students, half of whom have a scholarship from the Japan Student
Services Organization (JASSO).
金沢大学協定校に在籍する学生を対象とし、日
本語教育、英語による日本事情・日本文化及び各
専門分野の授業科目を提供する１年間のプログラ
ムです。プログラム独自のカリキュラムの他に、
学生の希望、日本語能力等により、一般学生に開
講されている授業科目を履修することも可能です。
このプログラムの学生は私費留学生であり、そ

Japanese Language and Culture Program

This is a one-year Japanese language and culture program to train specialized
students who have been studying Japanese language and culture at overseas
universities (undergraduate students). The program is designed to improve
Japanese language ability and understanding of Japanese society and culture,
and all of the lessons are given in Japanese. Students who wish to take other
subjects that are offered to regular students at Kanazawa University in addition
to the course program can take them.
There are two ways of applying to take this course: 1) Applying for Japanese
government scholarship for students studying Japanese language and culture
(through the Japanese Embassy in your country) or 2) Applying for The
Kanazawa University Student Exchange Program B.

の他に、希望する学生は、一般学生に開講されて
いる授業科目を履修することも可能です。
このコースに参加するには、国費「日本語・日
本文化研修留学生（大使館推薦）
」へ申請するか、
金沢大学短期留学制度プログラム B への申請（国

Program : C
Kanazawa University General Short-term Exchange Program
■ プログラム C：金沢大学一般短期留学プログラム
International students who do not participate in Program A or B are on this
program. Program C students are affiliated to one of the faculties or graduate
schools at Kanazawa University and take courses specified on its course of
study. There is no restriction as to students’ major field of study. Because classes
are lectured in Japanese, strong command of Japanese is required. However,
some of the graduate courses are instructed in English.

This is a six-month preliminary Japanese language course designed for
international students with a Japanese government scholarship (research
students and students in teachers’ training course) to acquire the skills necessary
for research in Japan. After completion of the program, students may enter a
graduate school of Kanazawa University, Japan Advanced Institute of Science
and Technology (JAIST), the graduate school of Kanazawa College of Art, etc.
新たに来日した国費外国人留学生（研究留学生
及び教員研修留学生）を対象として、６カ月間で
集中的に日本語を教授し、日本での研究活動に必
要な日本語を習得させるコースです。
コース修了後は、金沢大学大学院や、北陸先端
科学技術大学院大学、金沢美術工芸大学等に進学

Japan-Korea Cooperative Program for Science and
Engineering Students
■ 日韓共同理工系学部留学生コース　（学部予備教育）
The program is designed to invite students who have graduated from Korean
high schools to Japanese science and engineering universities to provide
them with cutting-edge technology and knowledge and to promote mutual
understanding between Japan and Korea through student exchange.
This six-month program is for students who are accepted to Japan-Korea
Cooperative Program. Its aim is to improve students’ Japanese language skills and general science (Mathematic, Physics and Chemistry).
韓国の高等学校卒業者を日本の理工系の大学に
招致し、最先端の技術・知識を習得させるとともに、
留学生交流を通じた日韓間の相互理解の増進に寄
与することを目的としています。
本コースでは、日韓共同理工系学部留学生事業に
採用された学生を対象に、日本語能力の向上、専
門分野の日本語学習、基礎科目（数学、物理、化学）
の復習等を６カ月間にわたって実施しています。
Integrated Japanese Language Program
■ 総合日本語コース （本学に在籍する外国人留学生対象）
This is a Japanese language program for international students studying at
Kanazawa University who wish to learn the Japanese language. The program
offers a variety of classes such as a kanji class, a Japanese skills class (reading,
hearing, composition, etc.) as well as regular classes (levels A ~ F). Students
are assigned to classes according to their Japanese language skills. As a rule, all
classes are held in the morning.
本学に在籍する外国人留学生で、日本語学習を
希望する者を対象としたコースです。入学等のた
め、日本語のみを勉強したい外国人留学生は受講
できません。通常クラス（レベル A ～ F）のほか、
漢字クラス、技能別クラス（読解、聴解、作文等）

Eligibility for Application
The applicant should be a national of a country other than Japan,
and should fulfill all of the following requirements.
（1）Applicants should correspond to either of the following
ａ.A person who is expected to have completed 12 years of school
education abroad by the end of March in the year of admission, or
a person who is recognized by the Minister of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology of Japan to have the equivalent
level of education (For details, please contact the Admission
Division of the Student Affairs Department. Refer to “For
Inquiries”.)
b. A holder of International Baccalaureate diploma offered
by International Baccalaureate Organization who is 18
years of age or older by the end of March in the year
of admission.
c. A holder of Abitur (Germany) who is 18 years of age or
older by the end of March in the year of admission.
d. A holder of baccalaureat (France) who is 18 years of age
or older by the end of March in the year of admission.
（2）Applicants should have a score for the Examination for Japanese
University Admission for International Students (EJU) (Refer to

year or two years before the academic year of admission. (The test

Application Procedures
（1）Request for Application Form
The brochure with the application form is available in midSeptember of the year before the year of admission. A written
request for the brochure should be addressed to the Admission
Division of the Student Affairs Department. Enclose a selfaddressed (name, address, postal code), stamped return envelope
(Approx. 33cm×24cm) with your request. If you are a resident
of Japan, the postage is 390 yen. If you need a guidebook for
Kanazawa University, the postage is 580 yen. — otherwise
please enclose an international reply coupon of that value. Cleary
write “Request for Application Form for Self-financed Foreign
Students” in red ink on the front of the envelope.
（2）How to apply

Awarding of Academic Degrees
The bachelor’s degree will be awarded to students who successfully
graduate from the University.
（1）学生募集要項の請求
学生募集要項の配布開始は例年、9 月中旬ですので、学
生部入試課に請求してください。郵送を希望する場合は、
受信者の郵便番号、住所、氏名を明記し、580 円（大学
案内も含む料金、要項のみは 390 円）の郵便切手（日本
国内）又は国際返信切手を貼り付けた返信用封筒（角形
2 号約 33cm ×約 24cm）を同封のうえ、封筒の表に「私
費外国人留学生募集要項請求」と朱書きし、請求してく
ださい。
（2）出願方法
提出書類は、出願期間内に学生部 入試課（→「問い合わ

Graduate Schools
■ Eligibility for Application
The applicant should be a national of a country other than Japan and correspond
to any of the following.
〈 Master’s Course, Master’s Level Section of Integrated Course
and Professional Degree Course（Graduate School of Law）〉
A person who has graduated from a college stipulated in Article 83 of the School
（1）
Education Law, or who is expected to graduate from such a college by the day before
admission.
(2) A person who has been awarded a bachelor’s degree in accordance with fourth
paragraph of Article 104 of the School Education Law, or who is expected to be
awarded such a degree by the day before admission.
(3) A person who has completed 16 years of the school curriculum of a foreign country, or
who is expected to complete such a curriculum by the day before admission.
(4) A person who has completed a curriculum specified by the Minister of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan at an educational institute that has
a college established under the school education system of a foreign country, or who is
expected to complete such a program by the day before admission.
(5) A person who has completed 16 years of the school curriculum of a foreign country
by taking a correspondence course offered by a foreign school, or who is expected to
complete such a curriculum by the day before admission.
(6) A person who is deemed eligible for admission by the Minister of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.
(7) A person who has completed the professional course of a special training school (of
a duration of four years or more and which meets the requirements specified by the
Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan) and a
curriculum specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology of Japan on the day after the specified date, or who is expected to complete
such a course and a curriculum by the day before admission.
(8) A person who has entered a graduate school of another college and is recognized
as having the academic ability required for being educated in our graduate school
according to the second paragraph of Article 102 of the School Education Law.
(9) A person who has completed 15 years of a school curriculum in a foreign country,
who has completed a curriculum specified by the Minister of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology of Japan at an educational institute established under
the school education system of a foreign country in Japan, or who has completed 15
years of the school curriculum of a foreign country by taking a correspondence course
offered by the foreign school in Japan, and is recognized as having completed the
specified course with outstanding marks by our graduate school.
(10) A person who is recognized as having academic ability equivalent or higher to that
specified in (1) by means of the individual qualification examination for admission
and who has reached the age of 22 by the end of the month before admission.
〈 Doctoral Level Section of Integrated Course 〉
(1) A holder of a master’s degree or a professional degree, or a person who is expected to
have acquired a master’s degree or a professional degree by the day before admission.
(2) A person who holds or is expected to have been awarded a degree equivalent to a
master’s degree or a professional degree abroad by the day before admission.
(3) A person who has completed the graduate school course of an educational institute
established under the school education system in Japan and a curriculum specified
by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, and
has been awarded a bachelor’s degree or a professional degree, or who is expected to be
awarded such a degree by the day before admission.
(4) A person who has completed a correspondence course offered by a foreign school
in Japan, and has been awarded a master’s degree or a professional degree, or who is
expected to be awarded such a degree by the day before admission.
(5) A person who is deemed to be eligible for admission by the Minister of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.
(6) A person who is recognized as having academic ability equivalent to or higher than
that of a holder of a master’s degree or a professional degree by means of the individual

qualification examination for admission, and who has reached the age of 24 by the end
of the month before admission.
〈 Doctoral School of Medical Science (Doctoral Course)〉
(1) A person who has graduated from a college (only medicine, dentistry or veterinary
medicine course) stipulated in Article 83 of the School Education Law, or who is
expected to graduate from such a college by the end of the month before admission.
(2) A person who has been awarded a bachelor’s degree according to fourth paragraph
of Article 104 of the School Education Law, or who is expected to be awarded such a
degree by the day before admission, provided the person has completed the course of
medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine.
(3) A person who has completed 18 years of school curriculum in a foreign country,
provided the last course taken is medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine, or who is
expected to complete such a curriculum by the day before admission.
(4) A person who has completed 18 years of school curriculum (the last course taken
should be medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine) at an educational institute
established under the school education system of a foreign country in Japan, and who
has completed a curriculum specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports,
Science and Technology of Japan.
(5) A person who has completed 18 years of school curriculum (the last course taken
should be medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine) by taking a correspondence
course offered by a foreign school, or who is expected to complete such a curriculum
by the day before admission.
(6) A person who is deemed to be eligible for admission by the Minister of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.
(7) A person who entered another graduate school (the last course taken should be
medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine) and who is recognized as having the
academic ability required to be educated in our graduate school of medicine in
accordance with the second paragraph of Article 102 of the School Education Law.
(8) A person who has completed 16 years of school curriculum (the last course taken
should be medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine) in a foreign country, who has
completed a curriculum specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports,
Science and Technology of Japan at an educational institute established by a school
education system of a foreign country in Japan, or who has competed 16 years of a
school curriculum (the last course taken should be medicine, dentistry or veterinary
medicine) by taking a correspondence course offered by a foreign school in Japan, and
is recognized as having completed the specified course with outstanding marks by our
medical school with outstanding marks.
(9) A person who is recognized as having academic ability equivalent to or higher than
that specified in (1) and who has reached the age of 24 by the end of the month before
admission.
(10) Notwithstanding the above provisions, a person who has taken the medicine,
dentistry or veterinary medicine course of a college stipulated in Article 83 of the
School Education Law for four years or longer, and is recognized as having completed
the specified course with outstanding marks by our medical school, is eligible for
admission.

Tuition Exemption and Scholarships
（1）Tuition Exemption
Degree students with financial difficulties who are enrolled in
the undergraduate or graduate courses are eligible to apply for
tuition exemption (full or half) if they demonstrate an exemplary
academic record.
（2）Scholarships
The scholarships provided for our students are not sufficient
to support all applicants. Therefore, you are recommended
to prepare the necessary funding yourself. You can apply for
scholarships after enrollment. Only some scholarships listed
below, however, can be applied for before coming to Japan, and
their recipients are determined before enrollment.
The amount of scholarships varies from 30,000 yen to 170,000
yen a month. A few scholarships are offered to non-degree
students such as research students. For detailed information, see

Reimbursement of Medical Fees
（1）National Health Insurance
Japan has a national health insurance plan called Kokumin
Kenko Hoken（KKH）administered by regional administrative
bodies. International students are required to have this insurance.
It covers 70% of the expenses for medical care and hospitalization.
Although the insurance requires you to pay a premium,
privately financed international students can take advantage of a
reimbursement.
（2）Medical Assistance System for International Students
International students who receive medical care at a hospital will
be reimbursed a part of the medical expenses by the Japan Student
Services Organization (JASSO).
In order to be reimbursed by JASSO, you need register for
National Health Insurance after enrolling in the University.
（3）Kanazawa University Student Health Insurance
This is Kanazawa University's exclusive health insurance program
for degree students. Students who receive medical care at a
hospital will be reimbursed a part of the medical expenses on
demand. The premium is 3,000 yen per year. The annual benefit
is limited to 40,000 yen.

（1）授業料免除
大学の学部及び大学院に在籍する学生で、

料の全額または半額を免除及び徴収を猶予する制度

奨学金の数は多くありませんので，自分で留学に必
要な費用を準備することが必要です。金沢大学では，
いくつか奨学金があり，入学後申請することができま

■ 健康保険料
（1）国民健康保険
日本にはコクミンケンコウホケンと呼ばれる全国的な
健康保健制度があり、
各地方自治体がその事務を行っ
ています。留学生は必ずこの保険に加入しなければな
りません。
この保険によって治療費や入院費の70％が補助され
ます。この保険に加入すると保険料を支払うことになり
ますが、
私費外国人留学生は保険料が助成されます。
（2）外国人留学生医療費補助制度
病院で治療を受けた留学生には、治療費の一部を日
本学生支援機構
（JASSO）が補助する制度があります。
ただしこの補助を受けるには、国民健康保険に加入し
ていなければなりません。
（3）
学生健康保険
これは、一般の健康保険や国民健康保険などのよう
な法律に基づく社会保険ではなく、本学の制度として
設けられたものです。傷病により診療機関を利用した
場合、その請求により、医療費補助が給付されます。た
だし、
年間を通じて1人40,000円が限度です。
なお、この制度には正規生のみが加入できます。保
険料は年額3,000円です。

Immigration Procedures

Visa for Entrance Examination
Before coming to Japan to take an entrance examination, you should obtain a
visa issued by the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your country. You should
state clearly that your purpose is to take a university entrance examination.
You will receive a visa for the status of Tanki-taizai (Temporary Visitor).

Ryugaku (College Student) Visa
Visa for non-residents of Japan
（1）
Be sure to obtain a Ryugaku (College Student) visa before coming to
Japan.
After you are admitted and receive a letter of acceptance from
the university, you should take the letter to the Japanese Embassy or
Consulate in your country and apply for a Ryugaku visa. On completion
of the necessary formalities, you will receive the visa. Without this visa,
you cannot enter Japan as an international student.
Detailed information can be obtained from the Japanese Embassy or
Consulate in your country.
Visa for residents of Japan

You should go to your local immigration office with a letter of acceptance
from the University and apply for a change of residence status to that of
Ryugaku (College Student) visa.Please note that there is no guarantee
that this request for a change of status will be granted. Detailed
information can be obtained from your local immigration office.
N.B. A scholarship and The Medical Fee Reimbursement System are
applicable only to students with a Ryugaku visa.
Academic Calendar
Japanese Proficiency
Both the undergraduate courses and graduate courses are taught
in Japanese. The undergraduate courses, in particular, require a
high degree of Japanese proficiency.
Some graduate courses and student exchange programs
（KUSEP）are offered in English. The International Student
Center at Kanazawa University offers Japanese languages
courses to students who have already enrolled. You should
become proficient in Japanese at a Japanese language school or in
an intensive course in your country or Japan before enrollment.

of a private apartment varies according to the location and size. Usually you
have to pay a deposit and key money when making a contract. The monthly
rent for a single room with a bathroom and a W.C. is generally around
40,000yen~60,000yen (Charges for electricity, gas and water are not
included).

The Student Union Hall is located in
the central area of Kakuma Campus.
It contains Japanese-style rooms and a
concert hall with a 300-seat capacity. In
addition, it has a shop selling stationary,
books, food, etc., a post office, ATMs, a
barbershop, a co-op store, a travel center,
etc. to make life easier for students in
various ways. The 530-seat cafeteria, which
offers delicious food at
reasonable prices, is a place
where students go to relax.
角間キャンパスのほぼ中心に位置しています。和室や演奏
会用の大集会室（約 300 席）をはじめ、文房具・書籍・食
品などを購入できる売店や、郵便局・銀行の ATM、理髪店、

Lessons for faculty and graduate students are usually taught in Japanese. However, some academic advisors
provide lessons in English in the graduate school. In particular, in science courses, students who do not have

A center of culture created
by Maeda lords
Kanazawa, with a population over 450,000, is the capital
of Ishikawa Prefecture and as a center of administration,
economics, education and culture, one of the leading
cities in the central area of Japan facing the Japan Sea. Its
foundation was laid by the Maeda lords in the Edo period
(1603 ~ 1867).
The Maeda clan boasted vast territorial holdings and
one million koku (a yield of five million bushels of rice)
— in those days Kaga was the wealthiest province in
Japan. In order to prevent the Tokugawa Shogunate from
suspecting that Kaga was plotting a rebellion, the lords
promoted learning, performing arts, handicrafts, etc., rather
than armed force. Consequently, Kaga became a center of
culture referred to as “the library of Japan”, and produced
many artists and specialists in academic research.
In 1871, at the time of the Meiji Restoration, the feudal
provinces were abolished and the modern prefectures were
established. Kanazawa was the central city of the Hokuriku
region. The fourth junior high school under the old system
of education was opened in 1887 to educate elite students
who would become the leaders of the country. Kanazawa
flourished as an academic city. The school maintained
its educational tradition and evolved into Kanazawa
University, which opened its doors after World War II.
A city with Japanese culture
It is said that Japan’s “good old” traditional culture was lost
as cities were modernized and developed. Kanazawa is one
of the few cities where tradition is still firmly entrenched in
people’s daily lives.
For example, cultural activities related to people’s
lifestyle, such as tea ceremony and flower arrangement, and
traditional performing arts such as Noh, Noh chanting
and Japanese dance are flourishing. There are many classes
for local residents and people who share interests, and
children have opportunities to experience such traditional
entertainment in classes and club activities at primary
schools and junior high schools. The fact that you can see
people wearing kimonos in town indicates the prevalence
of such activities.
In addition to traditional performing arts, Kanazawa
has other attractions; traditional handcrafts such as Kaga
silk dyeing, Kanazawa lacquerware, Kutani ceramics, Ohi
pottery, and Kaga inlay.
It is thanks to the Maeda clan’s policy of supporting
cultural activities that these handcrafts flourished in
Kanazawa.
Their high artistic sense and fine technique is sure to
impress you. For students who want to experience Japanese
culture while studying in Japan, Kanazawa is the ideal
location.

a city with an aura of history and the dynamism of a modern city.
Once one of the foremost castle towns in Japan,
a deep love of culture was fostered there.
This unique city with much to offer has been attracting visitors

Abundant nature
and traditional architecture
Another factor that led to the flourishing of traditional
culture in Kanazawa is the region’s distinctive scenery in
each of the four seasons.
Seasonal changes keep life interesting — in spring cherry
blossoms color the city pink; in summer sweetfish dance
in clear streams; in fall crimson foliage resembles swaths
of brocade; in winter the world turns white. In addition to
two large gently flowing rivers, Sai-gawa River and Asanogawa River, a network of water canals runs through the
city, making a pleasant babbling sound.
Because Kanazawa was not damaged by
the war, it still has historical and cultural
buildings that are over 400 years old.
When you stroll around town, you will
find old temples, shrines, and merchant
houses with lattice doors.
Because Kanazawa has many sightseeing
spots such as Kenrokuen Garden — one of the three
most beautiful gardens in Japan, Kanazawa Castle and
samurai houses, it is also a tourist city.

人口45万人を数える金沢市は、石川県の県都で
あると同時に、行政、経済、教育、文化などの面
で日本海側有数の基幹都市となっています。その
基盤は、江戸時代（1603～1867）、この地を治め
た前田家によって形作られました。
前田家の石高は100万石と、全国に点在した“外
様大名”で最大の財力を誇りました。このため、歴
代藩主は徳川幕府から謀反の疑いをかけられない
よう、武力でなく学問や芸能、工芸などの振興に
力を注ぎました。その成果が、「天下の書府」と
うたわれる文化大国を作り、学術文化に秀でた多
くの人材を輩出する土壌となったのです。
明治維新の廃藩置県（1871）で前田家が消滅
し、金沢県が誕生して以降も、金沢は日本海側の
拠点であり続けました。そのシンボルの一つが、
明治20年（1887）に開校した旧制第四高等中学校
であり、国を背負うエリート養成のナンバース
クールが置かれた金沢は、文字通り「学都」とし
て発展しました。
そして、「学都」の伝統を今日まで受け継ぐ中
核を担ってきたのが、旧制第四高等中学校の流れ
をくみ、戦後、開学した金沢大学なのです。

A progressive spirit
that is ahead of its time
Of course there is more to Kanazawa than tradition
and culture. The city absorbs new trends and fosters
an enterprising spirit, as demonstrated by the fact that
people develop handcrafts in accordance with the
needs of the age and with a modern sense of beauty
— they do not blindly follow traditional techniques.
That characteristic reveals itself in the appearance
of the town. The 21st Museum of Contemporary Art,
Kanazawa, which opened in 2004, is one example.
Because of its unique form, surrounded with glass
walls and a round roof, it was awarded a prize in an
international architectural competition. It also boasts
unique collections that have been introduced by
overseas publications such as “Newsweek” (U.S.A.)
and “Beaux-Arts” (France). The east entrance of Kanazawa Station, which
was renovated in 2005, features a huge glass dome
and wooden arch forming a tsuzumi, a traditional
Japanese drum. This installation has become a new
city landmark that symbolizes a new beginning and
harmony with old streetscapes.
Kanazawa also has attractive shopping areas that
offer the latest fashionable goods. On their days off,
many people from neighboring prefectures visit these
areas. A combination of liveliness and calm old-world
atmosphere makes Kanazawa a popular place to live.

ところで、近代化や高度成長が進むにつれて、
日本から古きよき伝統が失われてしまったと言わ
れています。こんな中にあって、金沢市は今も
その伝統が日常の生活空間に息づく数少ない街で
す。
例えば、茶道や生け花などの生活文化、能や
謡、日本舞踊などの伝統芸能などのお稽古事がと
ても盛んです。地域住民や同好の士による教室が
数多く開かれ、小学校や中学校でも授業や部活動
などで体験する機会が設けられています。街角で
和服姿の人を見かけることが多いのも、活発なお
稽古事と深い関係にあります。
そして、伝統芸能と並んで金沢市の個性を作っ
ているのが、「加賀友禅」「金沢漆器」「九谷
焼」「大樋焼」「加賀象嵌」などに代表される
数々の伝統工芸です。これも前田家のとった文化
振興策の所産と言え、作品に宿る高い美意識と精
緻な技術にきっと目を見張ることと思います。
留学した折に、日本文化に直に触れてみたいと
思う学生にとって、金沢ほどいい環境の街はない
かもしれません。

豊かな自然と伝統建築の宝庫
この伝統工芸が金沢の地に花開いたもう一つの
理由は、「杜の都」とも形容される豊かな自然が
織りなす四季と無縁ではありません。
街をピンクに染める桜の春、清流に踊るアユの
夏、錦を敷きつめたような紅葉の秋、モノトーン
の世界に変える雪の冬と、その鮮やかな移ろい
には飽きることがないでしょう。また、豊かな緑
は豊かな水を生み、市内には犀川、浅野川の大き
な川に加えて、用水が網の目のように流れ、街の
いたるところでせせらぎの音を聞くことができま
す。
金沢市が前田家の入城以来、400年以上にわたっ
て一度も戦災に遭っていないというのも、街から
日本的な情緒が漂ってくる秘密になっています。
街を歩けば、いたるところに古い寺院や神社があ
り、格子戸の美しい伝統的な町屋を見かけること
ができます。
日本三名園として有名な「兼六園」、前田家の
居城「金沢城」、江戸時代に侍が住んだ「武家屋
敷」などの名所・旧跡も数多く残り、観光都市・
金沢という顔もあわせ持っています。
時代の先端いく進取の精神
もちろん、金沢の持ち味は伝統や文化だけでは
ありません。常に時代を呼吸し、新しいものを取
り入れる進取の精神を培ってきました。例えば、
伝統工芸にしても、単なる技能の伝承ではなく、
時代のニーズや感性を先取りした創意工夫を重ね
てきてある今日なのです。
その一端は街並みにも表れています。平成16年
（2004）に開館した金沢21世紀美術館もその一つ
です。ガラス張り、円形というユニークな形そ
のものが芸術と言え、国際的な建築コンペで最
優秀賞に輝きました。建築デザインとともに、
国内外の近現代作品のコレクションが話題を集
め、「ニューズウィーク」（米）や「ボザール」
（仏）などの海外メディアにも取り上げられてい
ます。
平成17年（2005）に完成した金沢駅東広場も、
斬新なガラスドームと能楽に使う鼓をイメージし
た「鼓門」が、金沢の新たな胎動を予感させるラ
ンドマークとなり、古い街並みとのハーモニーを
奏でています。
このほか、最新のファッションアイテムやお
しゃれな雑貨を取りそろえたショップも充実。休
日には、隣県の富山、福井県からもたくさんの買
い物客が足を運ぶ金沢は、にぎわいと古都の落ち
着きを兼ね備えた暮らしやすい街として高い人気
を誇っています。
