GUIDING LIGHT February, 2010 “The Unimpeded Single Path” Rev. Shigenori Makino I was really surprised when I realized that it is already February. Time truly flies by much too rapidly. When I realized how much precious time I had wasted on unimportant matters, the following words of Shan-tao struck me with tremendous impact: “Man is always rushing about, busy with all sorts of daily endeavors, not knowing that one‟s life may expire at any moment. It‟s like a lighted candle in the wind on the verge of being blown out; to transmigrate in a flurry with great confusion, never finding a place to settle.” (Ojo-Raisan) We live each day rather contentedly, unaware that our life is exposed to unexpected dangers and crises. Our life is extremely vulnerable, yet, without realizing this true nature of life, we tend to base our reasons for living on the ever-changing temporary aspects of life in which we fluctuate between laughter and tears. We are elated when we win, and become depressed when we lose. We are happy when things go as we wish. These are very natural human reactions. However, problems occur when one clings to things over which we have no control. Life is truly worth living and should be appreciated because it is filled with mountains and valleys, prosperity and adversity. At the height of achievement, our self-attachment comes into play and we become conceited and arrogant. As a result, we end up troubling and hurting others as well as ourselves. In the same manner, at the lowest point of our misfortunes, we tend to wallow in our unhappiness and lose confidence, develop inferiority complexes and despair, having ultimately lost our sense of the value of life. It is the unhindered Light of Amida which makes me realize my true nature, ever-floating in Samsara. It is the Nembutsu which leads me to the Great Path of boundless freedom; freedom from my my own self attachment, which has been always persistently binding me. Here I can say, “Yes, I will be able to graciously accept life‟s ups and downs, happiness is giving with great joy.” This is the world of Nembutsu where we can truly appreciate life. A teacher once told me, “I can‟t really like a person who is too guarded, the „perfect person.‟” These words seared like a brand on my mind. The „perfect person‟ that he referred to is a defensive person who lives a self-centered life, thinking that he is always good and that he is always right. He surrounds himself with a protective façade in order to hide the weaknesses that make him uncertain and uncomfortable. He wears a protective armor, and dares not let his weaknesses show through, no matter how well protected he thinks he is. When I realized that this „perfect person‟ my teacher referred to was me and that I truly was caught in my own trap of deception, I could not help but appreciate the teaching of Nembutsu that always flowed toward me despite of and even ironically, because of, my stubborn and „perfect‟ self. “The Nembutsu is the unimpeded single path.” It is the path that takes me to boundless freedom despite the impediments and Minister's Message 1 - 2 limitations that arise from my self-love and self-centeredness. Though Buddha‟s Compassionate Light unceasingly illuminates the JSBTC Updates 3 darkness of our evil passions guiding us away from the impediments of our Nirvana Day /Lectures own bondage, it is human nature to prefer our own false fire, throwing more 4 wood on the flames of evil passions (hate, anger, selfishness, etc.) Higan & Keirokai 5 As we are illuminated by the Light to our unreasonable delusions and come to be made aware that if we cannot extinguish the fire of evil passion, in due TBT Board Hi Lites 6 time the force of the fire will extinguish itself. Not only that, Amida‟s Dharma School 7 Compassion never leaves us even for a moment, embraces us and protects us in the midst of the flames. However, I started complaining that I doesn‟t feel like winter now, so I‟m not in the mood to go skiing. At the same time, if there were lots of snow, I might be saying that I was getting tired of clearing off my car, or that it was too cold and slippery outside. It is so sad, but it is so true that my Monku, complaining will never run out!! For this month, I chose one Kanji character, 偽 for our better understandings of Jodo Shinshu. This character is pronounced as Gi, Nise and Itsuwari, which literally means false, fake and counterfeit. Also, antonym of 偽 is truth and reality. Actually, Jodo Shinshu means that the true essence of the Pure Land way, so it teaches us the true essence in our lives. In other words, the teachings tell us what is true and false. Have any of you had a similar experience that if you do something for someone with good intention, but it is ended up with your action bothers the person? Each one of us have different points of view, thoughts or ideas, so sometimes I cannot judge by only my ability what is good or bad. Therefore, Buddhism gives us what is true and important. However, I sometimes think how much I, myself, truly follow the Buddha‟s teachings as a Jodo Shinshu minister? The good example is the Eight fold Paths, Right Speech, Right View or Right Conduct. With regrets, I realized that I do not completely follow any of these. One of the important scripture in Jodo Shinshu, Tannisho (A Record in Lament of Divergences) in the postscript part, Shinran Shonin states: I know nothing at all of good or evil. For if I could know thoroughly, as Amida Tathagata knows, that an act was good, then I would know good. If I could know thoroughly, as the Tathagata knows, that an act was evil, then I would know evil. But with a foolish being full of blind passions, in this fleeting world- this burning house- all matters without exception are empty and false, totally without truth and sincerity. The nembutsu alone is true and real. Almost all of what we have been doing is false because there is always a possibility of our attachments and egos being mixed into our actions, but only the true and real is the Nembutsu, the teaching of Jodo Shinshu. Shinran Shonin is telling us that we should ask Amida Buddha what is good or evil, important or useless, truth or false. In Gassho Rev. The year 2010 is not new anymore and progresses on and on. Towards the end of the last year I came across a term, "perpetual procrastinator" in the newspaper, which was new to me. According to the dictionary, procrastination means „postponement‟ or „delay‟. In the month of December many people go shopping to send gifts to their family members, relatives and friends. But some people hesitate to buy things because they think the price may come down next week, Boxing Day, end of the year or after New Year‟s Day. They are perpetually losing the chance to buy. I guess there are two kinds of people; the first group of people would buy things, because they want things right away, at whatever the cost may be. And the second group of people would wait and see until the price comes down or the commodity, such as computers gets improved the following year. They may postpone the purchase perpetually. This term reminds me of the teachings by Rennyo Shonin who was the 8th Head Priest of Hongwanji and considered the second founder of Hongwanji tradition. He said, "You have to learn Buddha-Dharma when you are young and sharp.” As you get older, you get hard of hearing and understanding. When it comes to religious education, the younger the age is the better. Also he said, “As for Buddha-Dharma, there will be no tomorrow. You have to make time to learn Buddha-Dharma.” In the Buddhist community I often see people finding excuses for not coming to the temple; too busy, too young, too far, too old, not interesting and so on. I wonder when people can really learn the truth of impermanence which is the most urgent question of life, so that they can live in peace right Here and Now, hopefully for many years to come. TBT Sangha INVITATION TO THE DHARMA STUDY CLASS “Lives of Myokonin – Wondrously Excellent Persons” 7:30 pm Every Thursday night starting January 28 (6 sessions) February 11th, 18th 25th and March 4th Jodo Shinshu is called a religion of "hearing.” Through deep hearing one will encounter the Boundless Light of the Buddha and will thus be able to awaken to the true nature of himself through deeper reflection. By awakening to the greatness of the Buddha’s benevolence he is able to live a life of deep joy and appreciation with strength and serenity regardless of what life brings. In the Jodo Shinshu tradition, there are countless people who lived their lives with unshakable faith called Myokonin, - ‘wondrously excellent persons.’ In Nembutsu Buddhism – particularly Shin Buddhism – the term Myokonin is used to describe those who become aware of the workings of Amida Buddha and devoutly and joyously lead a simple life of the Nembutsu. Myokonin are compared to a white lotuses, which, through mired in mud, wondrously and exquisitely rise above it. They are ordinary people in all walks of life who have been awakened to a fervent faith. They are often nameless and illiterate, but they pass a lifetime in the purity of the nembutsu and, in reverence, are called Myokonin. As we reflect on the lives of Myokonin past and present, we will explore their clues of how to live our lives in the very complicated, confusing world we live in today. The lessons should be very easy to follow because we will explore the life stories of myokonin with interesting anecdotes and their expressions of faith captured in the form of poems. Regardless of the time and effort it takes, parents will do whatever is needed for the sake of their children because deep in their hearts parents always wish for the happiness and good health of their children. Recent research has found that 60% of the development of a person's brain is completed by the age of 3, and 90% of it is completed by the age of 8. Also, it was discovered that parents play a vital role in the process. Parents' involvement and close interaction with their children is especially important at this critical time period for the normal and healthy development of their children. Also, children's sense of moral and ethical values is nurtured through their religion, so it is very important that they are exposed to spirituality for their balanced growth as complete beings. In other words, at this very critical stage of development, children need to learn „what is wrong‟ and „what is right‟, and be nurtured to have kind and gentle hearts to be able to empathize and feel the pain and suffering of others. I believe that the best way to nurture their hearts and minds is to expose them to emotional education through their faith. Religion serves as a compass to set the direction for us on how to live, and balances us to live each day in the very best possible way. Religion provides the discovery of a foundation for us to live through the realization of being embraced by something much greater than us that is beyond our conceptual understanding. Whatever the situation, and no matter what happens, even in adversity, when life does not go the way we want, it gives us the strength and courage to enable us to live with the complete affirmation of Amida‟s Great Compassion. In this age of materialism and spiritual confusion, it is important for children to be introduced to the Buddha Dharma and become mentally and spiritually well rounded. Presently, the Dharma School Reorganization Committee is going through the process of preparing more attractive and meaningful programs for the children and families, and will present them in the near future. Under the expert guidance of chief cooks Tok Suyama and Nobby Shiraishi, the TBT Sangha men and with the able assistance of some kind ladies, prepared pancakes, sausages and fixings for an appreciative group of over one hundred and twenty hungry temple members. Seconds were also distributed to those with big appetites. Thanks to Mits, Aki, Dr. Ted, Larry, Richard, Randy, Janet, Kiyo, Jane, Mas, Dennis, Dr. Phil ( no, not that one!), Toivo, another Jane, Hik, Joyce, Linda, Rob, Dave, Paul & Hiroshi, the day was a resounding success. Hoonko Week End January 16 & 17, 2010 The Temple would like thank all those who came out to the Hoonko Eve Service on Saturday, January 16. We would especially like to thank Mrs. Kikumi Yoshida, Mrs. Gloria Sumiya and the ladies for serving “oshiruko” (zenzai) and tsukemono after the service. A wonderful warm treat enjoyed by all. On Sunday, we observed our Hoonko Service and New Year’s Social. We were treated to a lovely luncheon hosted by the Dana ladies and Mr. Tok Suyama. Thank You ! This year, we were honoured to have eight OPP officers from the Diversity Council who were visiting us on the occasion of World Religion Day. They presented the Temple with a plaque on the occasion of their visit and joined us afterwards downstairs for the Social and a chance to mingle with the congregation. We received the following message from them in an email: “We had a blast and this was our first ever visit at a Buddhist Service and it certainly enlightened and enriched our lives to have been so privileged to be part of such a wonderful service. After the luncheon, the festivities began with some table games. Many thanks to Dennis Madokoro for donating the prizes and organizing the games. It was a lot of fun. Next on the schedule there was a short entertainment programme MC’d by Mr. Kunio Suyama. The two buyo groups danced, a few members sang, as well, Reverend Makino. The entertainment portion of the day came to a close and a sing a long with Mr. Sid Ikeda accompanying us on his harmonica We ended the afternoon with free Bingo games, Jackpot Bingo and drawing for door prizes. Many thanks to Eric Mark for so expertly calling out the BINGO numbers for us. You did a great job! The big attraction at the end of the afternoon was the JACKPOT bingo (Congratulations to the winners). Many thanks to all those who donated items for the Door Prizes for the draws. NEWS FROM THE OFFICE The office has begun to implement some changes to contribute, however, small to help become more environmentally friendly. We are now accumulating receipts for at least three to four weeks, in an effort to save on stationery and in particular postage. Although receipts will continue to be produced each week, they will now be held and once signed, the accumulated receipts will then be mailed. に大切になってきます。さらには豊かな人間性を伸ばすために、宗教を通した倫理感や道徳感 が再重要視されてきています。幼児期に、何が「いいこと」で何が「わるいこと」かを知ることが重 要であり、人の痛みや苦しみを感じ取り、相手を思いやる心を育むためには、宗教を欠くことは出 来ません。 また宗教とは人生の方向を決める羅針盤であるとも言えます。人間の想像や力を超えた大きな はたらきに抱かれている事を感じ、いつでも、どこでも、何が起こっても、「そのままでいいんだよ」と いう阿弥陀仏の慈悲に安堵できる、心の拠り所を発見することでもあります。 物質的に豊かになり、しかし精神的には混乱したこの時代だからこそ、子供達には仏の教えを 通して暖かく豊かな人間に育っていただきたいと願っています。ぜひ子供達をお寺に連れて来て と が で き る で し ょ う か 。 闇 は 光 に よ って 破 ら れ 、 と 詠 ま れ て い ま す 。 仏 の 大 悲 の 光 明 に 勝 る 利 益 を い った い ど こ な付 い け 筈て で い ある りの まで す、 身 。 動 見 る き 人が がで 見き れな ばく 隙て だ苦 らし けく なて 仕 の 方 に 、 が わ し の よ ろ こ び 八 万 四 千 く さ せ る だ け で な く 、 自 分 を も ガ ン ジ ガ ラ メ に 縛 り 八 万 四 千 の 光 明 に 照 ら し 出 さ れ て 安穏なれ 人 間 を 言 わ れ た も の と 思 い ま す 。 そ れ は 人 を 固 苦 し い て 、 裸 の 自 分 を 決 し て 見 せ る こ と の で き な い 窮 屈 な 八 万 四 千 の 煩 悩 が き て い る 人 の 事 で あ り 、 常 に よ そ 行 き の 仮 面 を 被 って 絶い 対 」と に い 見う せ 自 た負 くに な縛 い り と 付 常け に ら 隙 の れ なて い い よて う、 自 に 分 身の 構弱 えみ て は 生 は 感を 、 激包 は ん こ で れ護 に っ 勝て る 下 もさ の る は の なで い あ の り で ま しす ょ 。 う念 。 仏 妙 好に 恵 そ の 故 に こ の 葉 は 私 の 胸 に 深 く 刻 み 込 ま れ て 忘 れ ら 勢 い は 自 ず と 力 を 失 う で あ り ま し ょ う 。 た だ そ れ だ け で は あ と あ る 先 生 が ポ ツ リ と 仰 言 った 。 こ の 言 「 私 は 、 隙 の な い 人 は 好 き に な れ な い 」 く知 て ら もさ 、 れ 更る に と 薪、 をた 加と ええ る 煩 よ悩 うの な炎 行を い 消 はし 止て め し らま れう 、 こ やと がは て で 火き の な 仏 の 光 に 出 遇 い 、 そ の 煩 悩 の よ し な き 迷 い を 照 ら し 出 さ れ 、 佛 心 慈 光 に 照 ら さ れ て ト ロ ン ト 仏 教 会 悩 の 薪 を 投 げ 加 え て い た の で し た 。 ま こ と に 幸 せ な こ と に
