During the week from October 4th, till October 11th, ten members from
the ‘Up With People’ group came and participated in a home stay program in
our town. These members were mainly comprised of young participants

between the age of 18 through to 29 and came from all around the world
including such countries as Brazil, Ecuador, Holland, Germany, Sweden,

with the local residents by visiting numerous elementary, junior and senior
high schools, day care centres, and attended community events. Such events

agricultural experience, Sports festivals, and even a meeting with the

People group. Although there was a language barrier, the group of Seika
citizens and the Up With People members exchanged through the medium of

gestures. Lunch was then prepared by volunteers, who were members of the

The phrase “okagede,” is most often used with reference

towards and generally means ‘thanks to, or thankfully. ’ It
can also be used when someone asks you how you feel,
however when the reference is made to a person you add
‘sama’ at the end which is the polite form to become 「おか
げさまで」. In this respect it is a polite way of thanking
someone for inquiring about your condition. The 「で」 on
the end is a particle and not part of the word but is
grammatically necessary in most cases.
