The “Four Motors for Europe” mission to Québec

The “Four Motors for Europe” mission to Québec
October 2014
Electrification of transportation
meetings & onsite visits suggestions
Québec’s abundance of clean, renewable sources of energy and its renowned
research centers, cutting-edge expertise and innovative businesses make it an
ideal location for the development of the electric vehicle industry. In fact, it has
just the right mix of assets to make it a world leader in transportation
electrification and help it achieve its vision for a green economy.
A thriving industrial sector
Québec’s electric vehicle industry:
 Enjoys access to an abundance of competitively priced clean and
renewable primary energy capable of driving growth within the electric
vehicle industry
 Possesses dynamic businesses devoted to helping the sector succeed
and backed by world-class research centers
o Québec is home to some 30 businesses specializing in the
electrification of automobiles, public transit, and specialized
vehicles as well as the development of batteries and electric vehicle
charging stations.
o It boasts no fewer than 30 university research centers and college
centers for technology transfer specialized in areas related to
hybrid and electric vehicles.
 Generates 3,000 direct and indirect jobs
 Is a source of world-renowned expertise in the design and manufacture of
hybrid diesel/electric and all-electric vehicles (e.g., hybrid city buses,
subway cars, delivery trucks, electric side-by-side vehicles), as well as
charging stations, batteries, electric powertrains, components, and electric
systems
Research and innovation
Québec’s vast expertise is a strong catalyst for innovation, giving the province a
competitive edge in the global electric transportation market. Québec possesses
world-class R&D capacity in the electric transportation sector, both in component
manufacturing and in fields crucial to the transportation technology of tomorrow,
including IT, optics/photonics, lightweight materials, and onboard electronics.
Various businesses also contribute to the province’s leadership through
advances in transportation electrification technology, including TM4, known for its
electric powertrains, the Hydro Québec research institute (IREQ), for battery
chemistry, and Nova Bus, for its new generation of electric city buses.
Program
Depending on the composition of the “Four Motors for Europe” delegation, visits
and meetings could be organised with :

AddÉnergie Technologies inc. AddÉnergie Technologies is the
Canadian leader in charging stations and the only Canadian charging
station network operator and manufacturer. The company provides robust,
flexible Canadian-made networked charging stations designed to operate
safely and in all weather conditions. AddÉnergie currently manages over
600 charging stations across the country.

Nova Bus. Nova Bus is a leading North American provider of sustainable
public transit solutions, including a wide range of low emission vehicles,
high-capacity articulated buses and integrated intelligent transportation
systems. Nova Bus is part of the Volvo Group, and operates three
manufacturing plants, two in Canada and one in the United States.

TM4. A wholly owned subsidiary of Hydro-Québec established in 1998,
TM4 develops and delivers production-ready electric and hybrid
powertrain systems for passenger vehicles, trucks and buses. TM4
contributes to attaining the highest possible energy conversion efficiencies
thanks to its expertise in permanent magnet motors, thermal
management, coil winding, outer rotor topology and motor and inverter
control algorithms.

Bathium Canada. For 25 years, Bathium’s team has been working on the
development and commercialisation of the Lithium Metal Polymer (LMP)
battery. Bathium Canada is a subsidiary of the French Bolloré group.
Visits and meetings could be organised with public and semi-public research
centres such as:

Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Québec (IREQ). Hydro-Quebec is the
only public utility in North America with its own R&D centre. All E-mobility
R&D activities are conducted at the IREQ Storage and Conversion of
Energy (SCE) Unit in Varennes. The SCE Unit has been conducting R&D
on battery materials and energy storage systems for over 40 years and
holds over 800 patents worldwide. It has granted 40 licences to
companies for the manufacture of various battery components.

CNTA (National Advanced Transportation Centre) is a non-profit
organization managed by a board of directors and a scientific and
technical committee composed of key players from industry, the public
and para-public sectors and the university and associative communities.
Established in 1996, CNTA is part of a Québec/Canada/ international
network of excellence for electric mobility. It possesses industryrecognized expertise and can count on specialized teams of engineers
and analysts at the cutting edge of electric mobility technology.

The Québec Advanced Transportation Institute (ITAQ) offers applied
research, technical assistance, technology monitoring and training
services to companies in the sustainable transportation sector. ITAQ is a
college center for technology transfer (CCTT) associated with Cégep de
Saint-Jérôme. It has unique facilities that are devoted to the development
of cutting edge ground transportation technologies (electric and hybrid
systems, energy efficiency and renewable energy).

McGill Centre for Intelligent Machines. McGill University's Centre for
Intelligent Machines (CIM) brings together twenty professors and over one
hundred researchers in the fields of electrical and mechanical engineering
and computer sciences. Their shared goal is to analyze and design
intelligent systems for applications in the robotics, automation, aerospace,
automotive and biomedical sectors. One of CIM’s largest projects is the
development of optimal electric powertrains for road vehicles.
N.B. Please note that the above list of suggestions is to be intended as
preliminary and as such may not be exhaustive.
