Veloce-Feroce TOTAL PERFQRMANCE TIME Composer's Comment My piano trio derives its title, but not its prevailing character, from the poem of the same title by William Butler Yeats. While Yeats populates his poem with bittersweet reflection (almost certainly on his tortuous love affair with Maud Gonne), my trio is meant to evoke a certain innocence associated with youth. The harmonic and gestural language of A MEMORY OF from functional tonality — although frequently extend. ed and YOUTH draws extensively bathed in a cluomaticism associated vrith the early tvrentieth century, nonetheless intended to recall an era not yet troubled by the compulsion to break free of tonal constraints. First movement: Slow, majestic introduction leading to an undisguised sonata form Second movement: A rondo form whose opening segment is a parody of an imaginary Baroque nunuet, wluch returns in increasingly embellished form as a ritornello between each of three succeeding (contrasting) courtly dances. The movement culminates in a prolonged fugato on the subject of the first dance. intentionally Pastorela (Spanish for shepherdess) Third movement: suggests a gentle romance vrhose tradition dates from medieval times. Begins in a tempo (Tranquillo) so slow as to suggest suspended animation, alternating with a contrasting section (Elastico) heard twice betvreen statements of the initial (very slovr) music. Fourth movement: Fast and furious. A 5-part rondo form of dizzying speed. A MEMORY OF YOUTH vras composed betvreen mid-2011 and Christmas Day 2012.
