EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT FORM FOR TABLING A QUESTION FOR WRITTEN ANSWER (Rule 130) EN Select only one addressee: ✘ PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL COUNCIL VICE-PRESIDENT / HIGH REPRESENTATIVE COMMISSION Priority question AUTHOR(S): Dario Tamburrano SUBJECT: State Aid for Nuclear: Hinkley Point C, United Kingdom (please specify) TEXT: Several press releases have recently been reporting about the possible European Comission's approval of the UK's State aid plan for the nuclear power plant of Hinkley Point C. The EC's approval: * would contradict the previous EC's position (C(2013) 9073 18.12.2013), which considers the nuclear sector not technologically immature enough to need State aids; * would contradict the EU's guidelines on State aid for environmental protection and energy 2014-2020 (2014/C 200/01) which, in art 1.2, exclude nuclear sectors from the ones which can possibly receive State aid compatible with the internal market under Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty; * would set a precedent for other Member States, legitimating State aids towards the nuclear sector which will in turn push the renewable energy producers out of the market. Considering the abovementioned points: is the Commission's decision on the UK's State aids to be interpreted as an indication of the directions upon which the future EU's energy strategy will develop?
