Celebrating and recalling
Il 2014 è un anno ricchissimo di ricorrenze e
celebrazioni.
Senza aver la pretesa di volerle menzionare
tutte, basti pensare in primo luogo al
60° anniversario della fondazione del CERN,
al 50° anniversario dell’ideazione del modello a
quark di Gell-Mann e Zweig, al 40° anniversario
della scoperta di Ting e Richter della J/y, ossia
del quarto quark “charm” del Modello Standard,
senza dimenticare il 100° anniversario della
diffrazione a raggi X di von Laue e - appunto
- l’Anno Internazionale della Cristallografia
IYCr2014.
Nel 2014 ricorrono il 60° anniversario della
morte di Enrico Fermi e l’80° anniversario
della sua geniale formulazione della teoria del
decadimento beta.
E ricorre anche il 450° anniversario della
nascita di Galileo Galilei.
Come se non bastasse, il 2014 sarà l’anno del
100° Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana
di Fisica. La prima Adunanza SIF ebbe luogo a
Roma nel 1987, presso il Regio Istituto Fisico di
via Panisperna, dove nacque la Società. Il suo
Presidente fondatore fu Pietro Blaserna, come
già ricordato in un numero della newsletter
SIF Prima Pagina che dal suo esordio in gennaio
sta riscuotendo un notevole successo tra i suoi
lettori. A seguire altre adunanze (non ogni
anno) fino alla 32a nel 1942. Nel 1947 (dopo
la guerra) il primo Congresso Nazionale, in
occasione del cinquantenario della SIF, si tenne
a Como. Fu numerato come XXXIII Congresso
per volere dell’allora Presidente Giovanni
Polvani.
La Società Italiana di Fisica trae spunto da
tutti questi significativi anniversari per le sue
attività nel quadro della Scuola Internazionale
di Fisica “Enrico Fermi” di Varenna, nel quadro
del suo Congresso Nazionale, ovviamente,
e anche nell’ambito delle sue numerose
produzioni editoriali.
In particolare, nel corso del 2014, Il Nuovo
Saggiatore pubblicherà in ogni suo numero
qualche piccolo campione dell’immensa
opera di Galileo Galilei. E in occasione del
suo 100˚ Congresso Nazionale, che si terrà a
Pisa dal 22 al 26 settembre, la SIF allestirà uno
speciale spettacolo teatrale basato sulla lettura
e interpretazione di alcune speciali pagine
galileiane.
L’auspicio è che i giovani, il cui sguardo è
giustamente rivolto al futuro, traggano tuttavia
costante ispirazione da un passato così ricco di
scoperte e di storia.
The year 2014 is especially rich in
anniversaries and celebrations.
Without claiming to be complete, let us
mention first of all the 60th anniversary of
CERN foundation, the 50th anniversary of the
formulation of the quark model by
Gell-Mann and Zweig, the 40th anniversary
of the discovery by Ting and Richter of the
J/y, namely the fourth “charmed” quark of
the Standard Model, not to leave behind the
100th anniversary of the X-ray diffraction of
von Laue and – in fact – the International Year
of Crystallography IYCr2014.
In 2014 also fall the 60th anniversary of
Enrico Fermi’s death and the 80th anniversary
of his ingenious formulation of the beta-decay
theory.
Moreover this is the year of the 450th
anniversary of Galileo Galilei’s birth.
And on top of that, 2014 will also be the
year of the 100th National Congress of the
Italian Physical Society. The first SIF Meeting
took place in Rome in 1897, at the Royal
Physics Institute of via Panisperna, where the
Society was established. Its founding President
was Pietro Blaserna as already mentioned in
an issue of the newsletter SIF Prima Pagina
that from its debut in January is achieving a
resounding success among its readers. Other
meetings followed (not annually) until the
32nd in 1942. In 1947 (after the end of the war)
the first National Congress, that coincided with
the 50th anniversary of SIF foundation, was
held in Como. By decision of the then President
Giovanni Polvani it was sequentially numbered
as the XXXIII Congress.
The Italian Physical Society takes its cue
from all these significant anniversaries for its
activities in the frame of both the International
School of Physics “Enrico Fermi” of Varenna
and its National Congress, as well as for its
numerous editorial productions.
In particular, in the course of 2014, Il Nuovo
Saggiatore will publish in each of its issues small
samples of the immense work of Galilei. And
on the occasion of its 100th National Congress,
to be held in Pisa from 22 to 26 September, SIF
will put on stage a performance based on the
reading of some special Galileian passages and
their illustration.
Our wish is that the young, who righty
look at the future, might nevertheless derive
constant inspiration from a past so rich in
history and discoveries.
