Energy business in Extremadura
The promotion of a clear energy policy has allowed the quick growth of the
Extremadura energy sector from 2007 to 2013. This growth has been structured in
two directions, the increase of energy generation by renewable energies and the
reinforcement of the current non-green energy structure.
-
The green technology companies have focused on the 3 big energy resources
of the region: sol, biomass and wind.

Solar: photovoltaic energy has been the main driver of the energy industry
between 2006 and 2008. Currently, Extremadura region gathers >40% of
Spanish concentrated solar power (CSP) projects.

Wind energy has also been boosted and in 2011 the first 97 wind parks were
approved in Extremadura, with more than 1.700MW.

Biomass is nowadays an emerging sector, due to the large quantity of
available resources of the region. Many plants are being promoted and an
average of 150MW is expected to be implanted in the next 3 years.

Energy investment
CSP and PV plants are high cost technologies (an average of 200-300M€ for each
50MW CSP) with indirect influence on the industrial sector. These plants are a
source subcontracting for local industry, such as steel structures, electricity
components, solar module assembling, etc.

Employment and training
Energy sector has become an important employer
source in Extremadura during 2010 and 2013.
Renewable energy Plants are covering more than
10.000 direct jobs during construction stages and
more than 5.000 indirect jobs. These jobs will become
less than 1.000 during exploitation stages.
Construction of CSP and PV plants has proved, in
Extremadura, to be an excellent creator and fixer of
jobs. A medium CSP plant has construction periods of
2-3 years, employing more than 200 direct employees
per year. These workers were, in most of the cases,
coming from the rising unemployment of building
sector.

A key actor: AGENEX
The Extremadura Energy Agency (AGENEX) is a non-profit private organization
created in 2001 thanks to the IEE programme with the aim of promoting renewable
energy sources, improving of efficiency and energy saving measures and
promoting energy planning at regional and local level.
AGENEX has a staff of more than 25 technicians, mainly Energy Engineers,
dedicated to the promotion of green energies and energy efficiency.
Within the renewable energies, special mention is given to Solar Power, which has
cause an enormous change in the Extremadura Region during last 4 years.
Regional solar market has developed more than 200% in a short time period,
creating a new business tissue which has needed a special mentoring and training
activities from AGENEX.
Training and information.
During 2010-2013, the Energy Efficiency and the Renewable Department have
developed training seminars, information campaigns, supporting actions, etc.
related to green business and environmental protection.
