Vaticanus graecus 681 et Translatio Coranensis Byzantina (ex saeculo IX A.D.)"
In the 8/9th century CE, an unknown author translated the Holy Book of the Muslims from Arabic
into Greek. It is among the earliest translations of the Qur'an and was extensively quoted by the
Byzantine patrikios and didaskalos Nicetas of Byzantium (9th century A.D.) in his "Refutation of
the Qur'an". The only source of this polemical work against Islam lies in the Vatican Library (Vat.
gr. 681). A detailed analysis of the Greek Qur'an fragments with the Arabic text showed that the
translation contains some textually subtle, but theologically highly important differences with
respect to its 'original'. It seems to be the result of a Christian hermeneutical reading of the Qur'an.
The Seminar aims to highlight some methodological aspects of the analysis of the Arabic-Greek
translation, and is, thus, related to Qur'anic studies. In addition, the manuscript is one of the rare
written testimonies for colloquial Byzantine Greek. For liturgical studies, the translation is
interesting because of its use of technical terms in Byzantine liturgy. Beyond the analysis, the
Seminar shall give some perspectives on the Byzantine polemic against Islam as Nicetas' attempt
had a vast influence on later Byzantine and even mediaeval European apologetic writing against
Islam.

Il 10 aprile 2014 presso il Pontificio Istituto Orientale, Aula I - ore 16:00 si e' tenuta la
presentazione del volume di Marco Scarpa "Gregorio Palamas slavo. La tradizione manoscritta
delle opere".
Il volume analizza la diffusione nell'ambiente di lingua slava delle opere di Gregorio Palamas. Si
tratta di un censimento dei manoscritti contenenti tali opere dal XIV secolo, cioe' dall'inizio della
tradizione manoscritta, fino al XVII secolo (con qualche sconfinamento nel XVIII). Dopo una
panoramica storica sul XIV secolo a Bisanzio, nei Balcani e nella Rus', che delinea gli ambienti nei
quali fu effettuata la traduzione delle opere, e' presentata sinteticamente la tradizione manoscritta
greca, da cui quella slava deriva, e le cerchie nelle quali queste traduzioni avvengono. Si presentano
poi i 70 manoscritti, in tre sezioni: innanzitutto quelli che testimoniano l'origine della tradizione nei
monasteri dell'Athos (11 manoscritti). Il seguito della tradizione si divide nettamente in slavomeridionale (26 manoscritti, con l'aggiunta anche di alcune opere) e slavo-orientale (33
manoscritti). Di molti codici si e' potuto precisare la datazione, la composizione (particolarmente in
ordine ai testi di Palamas) e altri dati codicologici.

IMPRESSIONI BIZANTINE. SALONICCO ATTRAVERSO LE IMMAGINI FOTOGRAFICHE
E I DISEGNI DELLA BRITISH SCHOOL AT ATHENS (1888-1910)

Uno sguardo su Salonicco tra la fine dell'800 e gli inizi del '900, con le inconfondibili prospettive su
mura, chiese, mosaici, arredi marmorei bizantini. Dal 12 aprile fino al 28 settembre il Museo Civico
Medievale di Bologna ospita mostra "Impressioni bizantine. Salonicco attraverso le immagini
fotografiche e i disegni della British School at Athens (1888-1910)". Curata da Isabella Baldini, la
mostra presenta fotografie e illustrazioni di Salonicco eseguite dagli architetti inglesi Robert Weir
Schultz e Sidney Howard Barnsley, che visitarono la citta' nel 1888 e nel 1890 per motivi di studio,
influenzati dal celebre movimento artistico Arts and Crafts. Agli inizi del XX secolo il loro lavoro
fu continuato dagli allievi inglesi Walter S. George e William Harvey, che, grazie alla
collaborazione con le autorita' turche e ai finanziamenti del "Byzantine Research and Publication
Fund", poterono arricchire notevolmente la documentazione gia' raccolta: l'insieme del materiale
costituisce una sezione importante nell'archivio della British School at Athens, per la prima volta
mostrata al pubblico italiano.
Il percorso espositivo si compone di un itinerario attraverso i principali monumenti bizantini di
Salonicco: l'arco di Galerio, la Rotonda, le chiese della Acheiropoietos, di S. Demetrio e di Santa
Sofia. Alle immagini fotografiche si accompagnano alcuni oggetti rari - bizantini e ottomani - delle
collezioni del Museo Civico Medievale di Bologna: avori, icone e manufatti in metallo.
La mostra propone un viaggio all'interno della citta' prima dell'incendio del 1917, che ne modifico'
profondamente l'immagine, offrendo anche uno spunto di riflessione sul contesto culturale che
porto' i giovani intellettuali britannici del periodo a farne una tappa importante del proprio itinerario
di formazione. L'instabilita' politica nei Balcani e in Turchia limito' le ricerche degli architetti
inglesi, e tutte le attivita' furono sospese con lo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale: l'eredita' del
lavoro svolto, tuttavia, non ando' perduta. L'archivio della British School at Athens documenta,
infatti, un crescente interesse per l'architettura bizantina, il progresso delle tecniche della
metodologia archeologica e nella registrazione dei reperti; esso abbraccia il lavoro di tre
generazioni di studiosi, il cui epistolario attesta un costante impegno nel preservare i monumenti di
Salonicco, turbata negli stessi decenni da profondi cambiamenti politici e sociali.
In un contesto molto diverso, la Grecia di oggi continua a costituire, per i giovani, un punto di
riferimento culturale nel processo di acquisizione di conoscenze e competenze fondamentali in
campo archeologico e storico-artistico: sulla base di questa consapevolezza, nella mostra viene
ricordata l'attivita' delle missioni archeologiche a Creta e a Kos dell'Universita' di Bologna,
impegnata anche nell'attuazione di scambi didattici con gli atenei greci nell'ambito del programma
Erasmus.
La mostra e' organizzata dal Dipartimento di Storia Culture e Civilta' in collaborazione con
l'Universita' di Salonicco, La British School at Athens, e l'Associazione Culturale Italo Britannica di
Bologna.

"Samuel's State and Byzantium: History, Legend, Tradition, Heritage"
The International scientific symposium "Days of Justinian I" is an annual interdisciplinary scholarly
forum aimed at the presentation of the latest research followed by discussions on various aspects of
Byzantine and Medieval Studies, that include the treatment and interpretation of cultural, historical
and spiritual heritage in contemporary Europe. The Symposium is dedicated to Emperor Justinian I
with the aim to address a broad range of issues related to Byzantium and the European Middle
Ages, comprising the exploration of the cultural and historical legacy as an integrative component
of the diversities and commonalities of Unified Europe. This year the International Symposium
"Days of Justinian I" chose a special thematic strand "Samuel's State and Byzantium: History,
Legend, Tradition, and Heritage". Namely, the year 2014 commemorates the millennium of the
legendary conflict between Emperor Basil II and Tsar Samuel over the Balkans that ended with the
tragic death of Samuel in October 1014, after the defeat at the battle of Belasica. The conflict itself
is an illustrative example of how the legends and myths were created and constructed, both in
Medieval and Modern times, incorporating many aspects of historical and cultural tradition and
heritage. The specificity of this conflict is its enduring impact on the Medieval and Modern
Balkans, consequently indicating the need to present a more thorough and broader picture in order
to understand the contested interpretation and different perspectives and to offer a clearer picture of
how the medieval past was used in modern history, politics and culture.
The legendary conflict between Basil II and Samuel is a universal phenomenon, thus embracing
broader discussions and geographical areas in exploring various aspects of religion, ideology,
identity, heritage, political and cultural memory and myth-making reflected in the historical and
cultural legacy.
Papers are welcomed on various topics that may include, but are not limited to,the following areas
of discussion:
- Basil II versus Samuel: Real or imaginary conflict over the Balkans?;
- The Legend of Basil II and Samuel and the "Macedonian question";
- Interpreting the legends in medieval and modern Europe;
- (De)Constructing the narratives and myths in medieval and modern Europe;
- Continuity and discontinuity in political ideology between medieval Bulgaria and Samuel's state;
- Ethnicity and identity in the Middle Ages: Defining the "others" in Europe;
- Popular religion, "native" churches, and medieval heresy;
- The Ohrid Archbishopric and religious tradition: medieval and modern perceptions of religion and
ideology;
- The representation of Byzantium in art, literature, music and material culture: medieval and
modern concepts and approaches;
- Byzantine and the Middle Ages in European history and culture: Bridging the East and West;
- Preserving the cultural heritage: Interpretation, restoration and protection;
- Cultural legacy as a factor of interaction and dialogue between different cultures in Europe.

The study of Maximus the Confessor's thought has flourished in recent years: annual international
conferences, publications and articles, new critical editions and translations mark a torrent of
interest in the work and influence of the most sublime of the Byzantine Fathers. It has been
repeatedly stated that the Confessor's thought is of eminently philosophical interest, and his work
has been approached from a philosophical point of view in a number of monographs. However, no
dedicated collective scholarly engagement with Maximus the Confessor as a Philosopher has taken
place – and this colloquium will attempt to start such a discussion. Apart from Maximus' relevance
and importance for philosophy in general, a second question arises: should towering figures of
Byzantine philosophy like Maximus the Confessor be included in an overview of the European
continent's history of philosophy, or rather excluded from it - as happens today with most histories
of European philosophy? Maximus' historical presence challenges our understanding of what
European philosophy is. In this colloquium, we will begin to address these issues and examine
numerous aspects of Maximus' philosophical 'system': the logoi doctrine, Maximus' anthropology
and the human will's freedom, the theory of motion, his understanding of time and space etc. thereby also stressing the interdisciplinary character of Maximian studies.

We welcome paper proposals (presentation duration: 20 minutes) on Maximus the Confessor's
thought, work and relevance to any area of Philosophy by scholars in Philosophy, Byzantine
Studies, Theology and related disciplines. Papers may examine the relationship of Maximus'
thought to that of other thinkers, but the paper must focus on Maximus the Confessor's contribution.
All papers must be presented in English. Please send us the title and a short abstract of your

La experiencia de los lugares sagrados en la Edad Media

Se celebrara' del 26 al 28 de septiembre en tres espacios: en la sede de la Fundacion Santa Maria la
Real, en el monasterio de Santa Maria la Real y en el monasterio de San Zoilo de Carrion de los
Condes.
Como es tradicional el Coloquio Ars Mediaevalis completa la programacion de cursos de la
Fundacion Santa Maria la Real. Desarrollado en colaboracion con la Universitat de Girona y la
Diputacion de Palencia y dirigido por los profesor Gerardo Boto Varela y Alejandro Garcia Aviles,
se realizara' del 26 al 28 de septiembre y llevara' por titulo "La experiencia de los lugares sagrados
en la Edad Media: tiempos y escenografias".
PRESENTACION
Tras examinar durante las tres ediciones anteriores numerosas vertientes de las relaciones que a lo
largo de la Edad Media establecieron los seres humanos con las imagenes de lo trascendente, este
nuevo coloquio Ars Mediaevalis inaugura otro triptico argumental. Proponemos a la sociedad
examinar, desde perspectivas ineditas, la compleja dialectica de arquitectura y temporalidad a lo
largo y ancho del Medievo.
El encuentro con realidades perpetuas y sagradas solo es factible cuando cobran presencia aqui' y
ahora. Los lugares sagrados fueron edificados con el afan y la esperanza de favorecer la presencia
de la Divinidad y propiciar el encuentro con Ella.
Es en el seno de esos recintos, envueltos por las escenografias visuales, acusticas y olfativas, donde
puede ocurrir la experiencia de lo sagrado. Esa posibilidad, y aun mas la conviccion de esa
comunion trascendental, justifico' y espoleo' el esfuerzo tectonico y economico de una construccion
de naturaleza sagrada. Este seminario, que recorrerá escenarios sagrados islamicos, judios,
bizantinos y catolicos, permitira' reconocer en las arquitecturas medievales una dimension
netamente dramatica.
Esa profundidad de comprension y valor se adquiere al desentranar la narracion del espacio
sagrado y esclarecer qua' sucede en esos espacios cuando el tiempo entra en juego.
Nuestro coloquio abordara' las arquitecturas de culto de un modo alternativo a la concepcion clasica
de la disciplina arquitectonica, en la que tradicionalmente todo el peso se ha puesto en la gravedad,
con unos resultados y unas valoraciones que se basan en lo material, que diseccionan el quehacer
sin advertir la razon de ser y de experimentar.
Este coloquio permitira' proyectar una mirada comprensiva mas alla' del estatismo estructural para
alcanzar la vivencia de los espacios, las performances desarrolladas en sus interiores y el empleo
coral de las artes visuales.

COMUNICACIONES
Este coloquio constituye una convocatoria abierta a aquellos investigadores que deseen presentar
los resultados de sus analisis en esta materia. Los interesados deberan enviar un resumen del
contenido de su comunicacion, con una extension maxima de 2 paginas DIN A4, a espacio sencillo
(letra Times New Roman, de 12 puntos), ademas de una breve seleccion de las referencias
bibliograficas fundamentales en las que se apoyara' su discurso. Todo ello se enviara' a la siguiente

El plazo para la recepcion de los resumenes finalizara' el 30 de junio y se informara' sobre la
aceptacion o no de la comunicacion antes del 15 de julio. En el caso de las admitidas se hara' saber,
igualmente, el tiempo disponible para su exposicion en publico (tramite obligatorio), la extension
requerida para su publicacion en las actas y las normas de edicion. El texto definitivo sera'
entregado a los organizadores el mismo dia de su lectura.
LUGAR DE CELEBRACION
Las sesiones tendran lugar en la sede de la Fundacion Santa Maria la Real (Avda. Ronda 1, junto al
puente mayor), en el monasterio de Santa Maria la Real y en el monasterio de San Zoilo de Carrion
de los Condes.
CONDICIONES DEL CURSO
Matricula ordinaria: 120 euro
Matricula reducida: 85 euro (miembros de la Asociacion de Amigos del Arte Romanico, Amigos
del Romanico (AdR), Amics de l'Art Romanic de Catalunya, a los asistentes al Coloquio de 2013 y
a los inscritos en otros cursos de la Fundacion Santa Maria la Real en 2014).
Matricula especial: 55 euro (estudiantes universitarios y licenciados en paro)
Los alumnos que opten por la matricula reducida o especial deberan presentar un documento
acreditativo de su situacion: carnet universitario, tarjeta de desempleo o carnet de alguna de las
asociaciones arriba mencionadas. Los asistentes al Coloquio de 2013 o a otros cursos de la
Fundacion Santa Maria la Real en 2014 quedan exentos de este tramite. Los investigadores cuyas
comunicaciones hayan sido admitidas para su lectura solo abonaran una tasa de 20 euro. El precio
incluye el material didactico, la excursion y las actas publicadas.

A aquellos alumnos que por propia voluntad anulen su matricula con posterioridad alplazo de
inscripcion solo se les devolvera' el 50% del importe.

XXIII Finnish Symposium on Late Antiquity "Conflict in Late Antiquity"
Tvaerminne, Finland, 17–18 October 2014
The XXIII Finnish Symposium on Late Antiquity will be organized on 17–18 October 2014. The
aim of the symposium is to bring together scholars and postgraduate students with an interest in
Late Antiquity from a variety of universities and disciplines. Our main aim is to stimulate
interdisciplinary dialogue between philology, archaeology, history, theology, religious studies, art
history and other disciplines that deal with Late Antiquity.
The theme of the symposium in 2014 is "Conflict in Late Antiquity". It will be approached from a
wide perspective, including different types and levels of conflict and attempts at solving them.
Conflict can be discussed from the from the point of view of politics and competition for power,
ethnic conflicts, conflicts between different areas and peoples of the empire, cultural and religious
conflicts between and within traditions, doctrinal conflict, interpretation and portrayal of conflict in
literature and art, personal conflicts, and conflicts versus everyday life. We welcome papers that
discuss scholarly approaches to late antiquity, why the sources and scholarship focus so
emphatically on conflict, and what other perspectives can be applied instead.
This year's symposium features the following invited speakers:
Hagith Sivan (Department of History, University of Kansas). Prof. Sivan is specialist in Roman
history, Late Antiquity, study of women in Antiquity as well as the Hebrew Bible, Jewish history
and early Christianity. She has written/edited six books: Ausonius of Bordeaux: Genesis of a Gallic
Aristocracy (1993); Shifting Frontiers in Late Antiquity (1996, co-edited); Dinah's Daughters.
Gender and Judaism from the Hebrew Bible to Late Antiquity (2002); Between Woman, Man and
God: A New Interpretation of the Ten Commandments (2004); Palestine in Late Antiquity (2008)
and Galla Placidia. The Last Roman Empress (2011). She has written articles on topics ranging
from the Roman army in late ancient Spain to Christian ascetic females, and from the Visigothic
kings of Toulouse to Jewish childhood and to meandering monk Barsauma.
Petri Luomanen (Biblical Studies, University of Helsinki). Prof. Luomanen has studied JewishChristians - i.e. Christians who embraced Christian faith but kept their Jewish way of life - and
hostility expressed against them by both Christians and other Jews. He has employed socialscientific and cognitive approaches in his works. His publications include Recovering JewishChristian Sects and Gospels (2012), Explaining Christian Origins and Early Judaism: Contributions
from Cognitive and Social Science (2007, editor with Ilkka Pyysiaeinen and Risto Uro), and A
Companion to Second-Century Christian 'Heretics' (2005, 2008 editor with Antti Marjanen).
Lucy Grig (School of History, Classics and Archaeology, University of Edinburgh). Dr. Grig is
specialist in cultural history in Late Antiquity, including literary and material culture with particular
interest in religious history and popular culture. She has published Making Martyrs in Late
Antiquity (2004) and co-edited (with Gavin Kelly) Two Romes: Rome and Constantinople in Late
Antiquity (2012).
Antti Lampinen (Classics, University of Turku). Dr. Lampinen is specialist in Greco-Roman
ethnographical writing. He finished his doctoral dissertation, Istae contra omnium religiones.
Characterizing Northern Barbarian Religiosity in the Graeco-Roman Literary Tradition from
Hellenism to the Later Empire in 2013.
There is space for a maximum of nine more papers. If you wish to deliver a paper, please send a
short abstract (maximum length 300 words) by 1 June 2014 to Dr. Ville Vuolanto:
[email protected]. We encourage not only senior, but also junior scholars and postgraduate
students to participate.
Applicants will be informed by 19 June 2014 whether they have been accepted. We have reserved
30 minutes for each presentation including discussion, wherefore we recommend limiting the
papers to 20 minutes.
The symposium will be organized in the premises of a zoological research station operated by the
University of Helsinki at a beautiful location at Tvaerminne on the southern coast of Finland
(http://luoto.tvarminne.helsinki.fi/english). It is organized by an interdisciplinary organizing
committee under the auspices of the center of excellence "Reason and Religious Recognition" in the
Faculty of Theology, University of Helsinki, together with Department of World Cultures,
University of Helsinki.
The seminar is free. We will offer transportation from Helsinki to Tvaerminne and the return
journey, as well as accommodation (one night) and meals in Tvaerminne. However, we are not able
to cover any travel costs to or accommodation in Helsinki. Registration for the conference will start
1 September and close on 30 September 2014.

Aufgabengebiet:
- Inventarisierung und Katalogisierung verschiedener Medientypen nach RAK-WB
- Administration der digitalen Bibliothek, u.a. Pflege, Katalogisierung und Bereitstellung von
elektronischen Ressourcen
- Bibliographische Recherchen
- Betreuung der Bibliotheksbenutzer und Mitarbeit bei allen bibliothekarischen Arbeiten
Anforderungen:
- Abschluss als Diplom Bibliothekar/in, B.A. Bibliotheks/Informationswissenschaftler/in oder
vergleichbare Qualifikation
- gute Kenntnisse der geltenden Katalogisierungs Regelwerke (RAK-WB, Transliteration des
Russischen) bzw. die Bereitschaft, sich zuegig einzuarbeiten
- entsprechende Kenntnisse in der Benutzung bibliothekspezifischer Software (z.B. Allegro C) bzw.
die Bereitschaft, sich einzuarbeiten
- sicherer Umgang mit Internetanwendungen und PC Standardsoftware
- gute Deutsch- und Russischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift sowie rezeptive Sprachkenntnisse des

Erwuenscht:
