A CHIESA DELLA SACRA FAMIGLIA
Fu costruita per espressa volontà di Padre Pio che
ne scelse anche il nome. Venne consacrata nel 1951,
al termine dei lavori iniziati nel 1926. Sono annessi il
Convento ed il Museo in cui sono conservati alcuni
oggetti ed alcune reliquie di Padre Pio, tra cui la
tunica insanguinata.

A ChurCh of the holy family
Built at the request of Padre Pio, who also chose its
name, this church was consecrated in 1951, completing the construction that begun in 1926. Near the
church there are a convent and a museum which houses objects and relics of Padre
Pio, including his blood stained tunic.

B CHIESA MADRE S. MARIA DEGLI ANGELI
Già chiesa della SS. Annunziata, assunse il nuovo titolo nel 1843 divenendo sede parrocchiale. Il 14 agosto
1910, Padre Pio, dopo quattro giorni dall’ordinazione
sacerdotale, vi celebrò la sua Prima Messa. In questa
chiesa si venera la Madonna della Libera, patrona di
Pietrelcina, rappresentata da una antica statua lignea
di scuola napoletana, incoronata il 6 agosto 1966 con
diadema d’oro. Il 3 dicembre 1854 liberò il paese dal
colera che stava mietendo numerose vittime. Viene
festeggiata, oltre il giorno di tale ricorrenza, anche la
prima domenica di agosto.

Once called the Church of the Annunziata, was renamed and became a parish church
in 1843. On August 14, 1910, four days after his ordination, Padre Pio celebrated his
first mass here. In this church is honoured the patron of Pietrelcina, the Madonna della
Libera. The statue of Our Lady is made of wood in the style of old Neapolitan craftsmanship. It was crowned with a golden tiara on August 6, 1966. In December of 1854
it is believed that Our Lady saved the town from a devastating cholera outbreak, which
had already claimed many lives. The Madonna
della Libera is remembered on December 3 and
on the first Sunday in August.

E’ l’ingresso al caratteristico Borgo Antico
(Castello). Il giovane frate passava spesso
attraverso di essa e vi recitava il Rosario con
i vicini … e fu il primo Gruppo di Preghiera.

This gate is the entrance to the old part of the town
(Castello). The young friar often went through here reciting the rosary with the people of the village, becoming
the first Prayer Groups.

Rifugio di studio e sofferenze di Padre Pio giovanissimo: qui cominciò l’Epistolario ed ebbe le prime
visioni demoniache e celestiali.

The young Padre Pio would often shelter here to study and suffer. It was here that
began his “letters” ("Epistolario") and also his first heavenly and demoniacal visions.

Piccola abitazione di due vani utilizzata dalla famiglia
Forgione come cucina e camera da pranzo.

This is a small two-room house used by the Forgione family as
kitchen and dining room.

Francesco’s birth, as bedroom; on May 25,
1887, at five o'clock in the afternoon, the
walls heard the cries of the baby.
Only a few hours before the birth, his
mother was helping her husband Grazio
on the farm in Piana Romana.
G CHIESA DI S. ANNA
E' situata su un costone roccioso denominato Morgione. E' la più antica del
paese (sec. XIII) e fu sede parrocchiale
fino al 1843. In essa, Padre Pio, venne
battezzato il 26 maggio 1887 con il
nome di Francesco e ricevette il sacramento della cresima il 27 settembre
1899. Distrutta dal terremoto del 1688
e stata poi ricostruita.

This is the oldest church in town, built in
the 13th century. It is situated on a rocky
slope called Morgione.
The original church was destroyed in
1688 by an earthquake and later rebuilt.
Here Padre Pio was baptized on May
26, 1887 and named Francesco. He was
confirmed there on September 27, 1899.

Vi si conservano ancora vari oggetti, utensili ed arredi
della famiglia Forgione. In essa i genitori di Padre
Pio, Maria Giuseppa De Nunzio e Grazio Forgione,
vissero il primo anno di matrimonio e qui nacque
il primogenito Michele.

I CASA DEL FRATELLO MICHELE
E’ composta da tre vani, al piano superiore della
casa materna. Vi abitò per molto tempo il fratello di
Padre Pio, Michele, e nella prima stanzetta soggiornò anche Mary Pyle, ricca benefattrice americana,
tra il 1941 e il 1943.
Padre Pio vi dimorò da sacerdote dal 1912 al 1916;
durante tale periodo studiava, pregava, scriveva
lettere dense di insegnamenti spirituali, sosteneva
dure lotte con il demonio, ma aveva anche visioni
celestiali.

Padre Pio’s parents, Maria Giuseppa De Nunzio and Grazio
Forgione, spent the first year of their marriage here and it
was here that their first son, Michele, was born.

This house has three rooms above the mother’s house.
Padre Pio's brother lived here for a long time. Padre Pio
himself lived here as priest from 1912 to 1916.
During these years he prayed, studied and wrote letters
filled with spiritual teachings. It was here too that Padre
Pio experienced both heavenly visions and temptations
by the devil.
In later years, from 1941 to 1943 this house was the home
of Mary Pyle, a wealthy american benefactor.

town, which Padre Pio would walk through on his

Once it was a mule-track which Padre Pio and his parents
walked to reach the farmhouse in Piana Romana; now
it is the “walk” of the many pilgrims reciting the Rosary
and meditating.
L PONTICELLO
E' a circa metà strada tra il centro abitato e Piana
Romana, in località Quadrielli. Nei suoi pressi il giovane Francesco ebbe tentazioni diaboliche.

Located in an area called Quadrielli, this is
a small bridge placed half way between the
populated center of the village and Piana
Romana.
Nearby Padre Pio experienced temptation
by the devil.
M STRUTTURA DI ACCOGLIENZA
E' nata dalla ristrutturazione di una vecchia casa rurale, a pochi passi dal ponticello. Vi si giunge percorrendo il tratto antico
del Cammino del Rosario: una breve salita
stretta e con un selciato sconnesso tra
muretti di pietra. Per chi transita a piedi da
quelle parti è un piacevole punto di sosta
che induce alla meditazione.

M gathering Site
This area has been developed by rebuilding an old rural house, a few feet from the
ponticello.
It can be reached by going through the old stretch of the Cammino del Rosario: a
narrow slope, with paved path and stone wall.
It is a pleasant stopping place for meditation.
N PIANA ROMANA - MASSERIA FORGIONE
E' composta da una sola stanza con pavimento di nuda pietra. Serviva ai Forgione
per custodire gli attrezzi da usare nei campi, ma anche per dormire. Oltre ad alcuni di questi attrezzi, vi è ben conservato l'immancabile focolare attorno al quale
ci si riuniva anche per recitare il Santo Rosario.

The farmhouse has only one room with a bare stone
floor. Besides being a storage place for their tools, the
house was used for sleeping.
The fireplace, still well preserved, was a gathering
place for the family recitation of the Rosary.

O IL “POZZO”
E' legato alla fanciullezza di Padre Pio che indicò il
punto esatto dello scavo a suo padre Grazio, adirato
perché non riusciva a trovare l'acqua. E' posto alla
sinistra del vialetto che conduce alla cappella.

O “Pozzo” (well)
Connected to Padre Pio's youth, this spot is located
to the left of the path that leads to the chapel. It is
believed to be the exact place that Padre Pio pointed
out to his father, when he was unable to locate underground water.

This was the name that Padre Pio gave to
two unmovable stones near the straw hut.
Q PIANA ROMANA - LA CAPPELLA
Piana Romana è una collina nel territorio di Pietrelcina, a nord-est di essa,
ricca di vigneti, di messi e di vecchi
olmi. E' possibile raggiungerla in auto,
dopo aver percorso circa 4 km dal bivio
di Pietrelcina, o a piedi, percorrendo il
Cammino del Rosario. Da essa è possibile osservare la parte antica del paese
e all'orizzonte una parte dell'appennino
meridionale.
E' la meta di migliaia e migliaia di pellegrini, sempre più numerosi alla Santa
Messa domenicale, che ora si celebra
nella più capiente Aula Liturgica “Padre
Pio” ed una volta nella piccola ma significativa Cappella (chiesetta S. Francesco). I
lavori per l’edificazione di questa cappella iniziarono nel 1958, per interessamento del compagno di infanzia di Padre Pio, Mercurio Scocca. Al suo posto c'era
una piccola capanna di paglia, dove Padre Pio si riparava dal sole e si raccoglieva
in preghiera.
Q ChaPel at Piana romana
Piana Romana is a hill northeast of Pietrelcina. It is full of vineyards and old elm trees.
It is about 4 km from the main crossroad and can be reached also by walking through
the Cammino del Rosario. From here, one can observe the old part of the town on one
side and, on the West Side, a view of the southern Apennine Mountains.
It is a meeting place for thousands of pilgrims, especially during Sunday Mass, which
is celebrated now in the new Aula Liturgica Padre Pio and once in a small, but suggestive Chapel. The building plans for this chapel began in 1958, because of the interest
of Padre Pio's friend Mercurio Scocca.
The site used to be a small straw hut where Padre Pio would seek shelter from the sun
and collect his thoughts in prayer.

Serviva da appoggio alla piccola capanna di paglia. E' custodito
nella parte posteriore della chiesetta dedicata a S. Francesco d'Assisi.

Used as a support for the straw hut,
this is located in the back part of the
chapel, a small church dedicated to
St. Francis of Assisi.
It was here in September of 1910 that
Padre Pio received the first signs of the
passion (invisible stigmata).

(circa 155 Km da percorrere); proseguire per Boiano-Benevento-Pietrelcina;
oppure
uscita casello di Foggia (circa 140 Km da percorrere); proseguire con
tangenziale e strada per Candela e imboccare l’autostrada Bari-Napoli
(A16), direzione Napoli; uscita casello di Benevento (a circa 25 Km); proseguire per Benevento, uscire a Benevento Ovest e imboccare la ss. 212
per Pietrelcina (a circa 10 Km).
Da NORD (A1) Via ROMA-NAPOLI: uscita casello di Caianello (circa 70
Km da percorrere); proseguire per Telese-Benevento-Pietrelcina.
Da SUD Via REGGIO CALABRIA-SALERNO (A3)-AVELLINO EST: imboccare l’autostrada Napoli-Bari (A16), direzione Bari; uscire al casello
di Benevento (a circa 25 Km); proseguire per Benevento, uscire a Benevento Ovest e imboccare la ss. 212 per Pietrelcina (a circa 10 Km).
In treno: fino a Benevento Centrale e poi TAXI o AUTOBUS di linea ETAC.
In aereo: aeroporto più vicino Napoli Capodichino.
