Welcome to the latest PYP newsletter.
PYP workshop
I would like to say a big thank you to the parents who participated in the Introduction to the PYP workshop
last week. Hopefully those that came along gained a better understanding of what our programme is about
and how the teachers go about planning the experiences and development of key skills and understandings
for the students. It was also good to see parents of students from our Early Years as it is important for
parents to understand that the Primary Years Programme begins with our Kindergarten students.
Trips and visits from ‘experts’
Another thank you goes out from myself and the PYP staff to the parents who have already come in to
school or who have arranged to come into school to talk to the students. We realize that talking to the
students can sometimes be quite daunting for those that don’t do it on a daily basis so we really appreciate
every single person who comes in to talk as ‘experts’ in a certain subject. These opportunities for the
students are invaluable as they can begin to develop an understanding of the wider world and how what they
are discovering in the classrooms links to the real world.
Later this month we will begin our second unit of inquiry in Grades 1 to 6. We are looking for family
members/friends prepared to come in and share stories from their culture, either in their mother tongue or in
English, with the Grade 1 and/or 2 students. The Grade 5 & 6 students are going to be finding out about
innovations (rather than inventions) so if anyone is involved in the making of a product and can share with
the students how that product has been innovated over time they would like to hear from you. We will also
be investigating how land use has changed over time as well as learning more about the different areas of
Italy and how the land is used in different parts of the country, including the crops grown in that area. If you
have any old maps of this area which the students in Grades 3 & 4 can compare with current maps, or if you
or a family member comes from a different region of Italy and share photos or knowledge about land use in
that area they would love to know.
Educational trips are also an important part of the learning that takes place in our programme. Last week
our Grade 5 & 6 students visited the Terramara museum, here in Montale, to learn more about structures
and how the available materials were used to build the houses in the past. Back in the classroom they have
discussed how this links to modern day house and structure building as they inquire into their central idea
‘The design of structures is dependent on the environment and available resources.’
We are beginning to plan other trips for all grades, including our two residential trips. We hope to offer a
mini-residential for Grades 3 & 4 again which will be one night away with lots of activities during the two
days. The other is our longer residential trip for Grades 5 & 6, which we hope will be three nights away and
similar to the trip two years ago to Val Pusteria. Obviously more details of all trips will be sent to you when
appropriate.
Planning afternoon

Next week we have our early dismissal for students on October 10 . I thought it may be interesting for you
to have a better understanding of what the teachers do during these planning afternoons. Due to the nature
of our programme, collaboration between teachers is vitally important and indeed is something that is
insisted upon by the IB. During a usual week, all of the grade teachers have a session to meet with their
partner teacher and with myself to discuss plans, ideas for upcoming units, possible trips, etc. During the
planning afternoons the grade teachers usually have the chance to also meet and discuss with Ms. Sidor, Ms
Chesterman, Ms Ferrari, Ms Forti and Ms Pedrazzi, our single subject teachers, to plan for upcoming units
and to reflect on the current unit in order to ensure that collaboration is taking place between all of the
teachers involved with teaching the students.
The collaborative planning usually takes up half of our planning afternoon, leaving the rest of the time for
other important collaborative meetings and professional development for staff. Next week we will be using
this time as a PYP team to develop a better understanding of Early Years. It is vitally important that all staff
in our school, but especially the primary staff, understand how the students work in Early Years and how the
children’s natural curiosity and desire to inquire is facilitated.

ecco una nuova newsletter PYP.
Workshop PYP
Vorrei ringraziare i genitori che hanno partecipato al workshop della scorsa settimana ‘Introduzione al PYP’.
Speriamo che quanti hanno partecipato abbiamo compreso meglio cosa sia il nostra programma e come gli
insegnanti pianificano le esperienze e lo sviluppo delle abilità chiave e della comprensione da parte degli
studenti. È stato molto bello vedere anche la partecipazione dei genitori delle ns. Materne perché è
importante per i genitori capire che il nostro Primary Years Programme inizia con gli studenti di Kindergarten.
Gite e visite degli ‘esperti’
Un altro ringraziamento da parte mia e dello staff PYP va a tutti i genitori che sono già venuti a scuola o che
hanno programmato di venire a scuola per parlare agli studenti. Comprendiamo che parlare agli studenti
possa intimorire quanti non sono abituati a farlo quotidianamente ma apprezziamo ogni persona che viene a
scuola in qualità di esperto in un determinato settore. Queste opportunità sono per gli studenti inestimabili
permettono di iniziare a sviluppare una comprensione del mondo e di come ciò che studiano in classe si
colleghi al mondo reale.
Più avanti nel mese cominceremo le nostre seconde unità d’indagine da Grade 1 a Grade 6. Cerchiamo
parenti e amici disposti a venire a scuola e a condividere storie della loro cultura, sia nella loro lingua madre
sia in Inglese con i nostri studenti di Grade 1 e/o Grade 2. Gli studenti di Grade 5&6 stanno facendo
un’indagine sulle innovazioni (piuttosto che sulle invenzioni) se qualcuno è coinvolto nel processo di
produzione e vuole condividere con gli studenti l’innovazione di un prodotto nel corso del tempo, sono
interessati a sentire il Vostro racconto. Studieremo anche come l’uso della terra è cambiato nel corso del
tempo nonchè studieremo varie zone dell’Italia e come la terra viene usata nelle varie zone, includendo le
colture che vengono coltivate. Se avete una vecchia mappa di questa zona che gli studenti di Grade 3&4
possono usare per fare paragoni con le mappe attuali o se voi e la vostra famiglia venite da altre zone
d’Italia e poteste condividere foto e conoscenze dell’uso della terra in queste zone, ci farebbe piacere.
Le gite d’istruzione sono anche una parte importante dell’apprendimento nel nostro programma. La scorsa
settimana gli studenti Grade 5&6 hanno visitato il museo della Terramara di Montale, ne hanno scoperto le
strutture e le modalità di utlizzo dei materiali disponibili per costruire le case in passato. Rientrati in classe
hanno discusso come ciò che hanno visto si collega alle case moderne e alle costruzioni visto che stanno
affrontando l’idea centrale ‘Il design delle strutture dipende dall’ambiente e dalle risorse disponibili’ .
Stiamo già programmando altre gite in tutte le classi, incluse le nostre due gite residenziali. Speriamo di
poter offrire ancora una mini gita residenziale per Grade 3&4 che comporterà una notte via di casa con tante
attività durante le due giornate. L’altra gita residenziale è per gli studenti di Grade 5&6 che ci auguriamo
consisterà di 3 notti via e simile a quella di due anni fa in Val Pusteria. Ovviamente maggiori dettagli sulle
gite verranno inviati al momento opportuno.
Pomeriggi di pianificazione
La prossima settimana avremo l’uscita anticipata degli studenti il 10 Ottobre. Ho pensato fosse interessante
per Voi capire cosa gli insegnanti fanno nel corso di questi pomeriggi di pianificazione. Data la natura del
nostro programma, la collaborazione tra gli insegnanti è di vitale importanza e quindi qualcosa su cui IB
insiste. Nel corso di una settimana tipo, tutti gli insegnanti hanno una sessione in cui si incontrano con
l’insegnante con cui collaborano e con me per discutere progetti, idee per le unità successive e possibili gite.
Nel corso dei pomeriggi di pianificazione, gli insegnanti di classe hanno la possibilità di incontrarsi con e
confrontarsi con Ms. Sidor, Ms Chesterman, Ms Ferrari, Ms Forti e Ms Pedrazzi, le nostre insegnanti
specialiste per assicurarsi che ci sia piena collaborazione tra gli insegnanti impegnati con gli studenti.
La pianificazione collaborativa occupa circa metà del tempo dei pomeriggi di pianificazione, il resto del
tempo viene dedicato per altri incontri collaborativi e momenti di sviluppo professionale per lo staff. La
prossima settimana useremo questo tempo come team PYP per sviluppare una migliore conoscenza di Early
Years. È di vitale importanza che tutto lo staff nella scuola ma soprattutto lo staff delle Primarie capisca
come gli studenti lavorano in Early Years e come venga agevolata la naturale curiosità e desiderio dei
bambini di scoprire.
