In 2014 INRIM,
the Italian Metrology Institute,
is celebrating
80 years of Metrology in Turin
Since the second half of the 19th century, Turin has been
the cradle of Metrology, the science of measurements.
In the 20th century two institutes of Metrology were
established: the National Electrotechnical Institute
“Galileo Ferraris” in 1934 and the Metrology Institute
“Gustavo Colonnetti” in 1968.
Therefore 1934 is the year Metrology formally settled
in Turin.
This year 2014, 80 years since Metrology officially settled
down in Turin, INRIM has organized an international
event to celebrate the anniversary.
The celebrations will take place from December 4 to
December 6, in Turin, in different locations: at INRIM,
at the royal residence Palazzo Madama, and in the former
Institute Galileo Ferraris. Representatives of the local and
national authorities and institutions have been invited.
There will be a visit to the INRIM laboratories and
conferences will be held by the Nobel Laureates in
Physics William Phillips and David Wineland and by
Presidents or Delegates of Metrology Institutes from all
over the world.
A special philatelic postmark dedicated to the 80 years
of Italian Metrology will be issued at Palazzo Madama
on December 5, from 9:30 to 15:30.
This is a special postmark
which qualifies the event
from a cultural viewpoint
and maintains a historical
and unique memory of the
anniversary.
