Ghent (/ˈɡɛnt/; Dutch: Gent, pronounced [ɣ̟ɛn̪ t]̪ ; French: Gand, pronounced: [ɡɑ̃ ]) is a city and a
municipality located in the Dutch-speaking Flemish region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city
of the East Flanders province. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Schelde
and Leie and in the Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe.
Today it is a busy city with a port and a university. With over 240.000 inhabitants Ghent is Belgium's

Getting around in Belgium
Belgium has a well developed public transport network. Over greater distances, it is most common to
travel by train on the Belgian Railways ('NMBS'). There are trains from Brussels Airport to Ghent
approximately twice every hour (15€ 2nd class, 21€ 1st class, travel time appr. 1 hour). Trains arrive in
Ghent at ‘Gent Sint-Pieters Station’ located just outside the city center (location B on the map, see
next page).
Tip: if you buy a return ticket to Brussels Airport, make sure to specifically ask for 'Airport' (Dutch:
Brussel Nationale Luchthaven), not just 'Brussels'. There is a special tax ('Diabolo tax') for train travel
to the airport.
Within the city of Ghent, the usual means of transportation are buses, trams and taxis. It is also
convenient to walk. A walk from the railway station to the city centre takes about 25 minutes. When
walking, don’t forget it is April in Belgium: it is wise to carry an umbrella with you.
