Linked Open Data & PiLOD Erwin Folmer ([email protected]) Wie kent Linked Data? Open Data being offered in many ways. The silo’s of government data, and potential links with data on the web. But probably more questions raised than solutions. (How) Will this work? What should be the approach? Keep databases in tact with original vision, and no harmonisation to 1. No 1 data model, no 1 truth, no 1 reality: Multiple views on data: Variety! Anybody can say anything about anything Linking of multiple and different (unknown) models Data with linked context (standardised semantics / vocabularies) Technical fundament based on W3C standards Quality of data (more eyes) User statistics on element level (indicator of reliability) Simpler for user/adopter, not for provider of data. Beautiful unexpected applications and discoveries (see more, do more, play more) 10 disadvantages of LOD (For App Developer) Dependency on provider of data (networked dependency) Dependency on metadata Takes to much time to find out if data source is useful (need LOD viewer) Different types of sources (even individuals) – reliability? (advantage: user statistics) Not that easy in practice. Complex and practical knowledge is scarce. Everybody his own URIs. Relatively not proven technology (tooling) Difficult to customize; loosing control (strange things in data) Usage of data in a different context then intended, potentially a problem Scary, unexpected applications (the pizza example) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNJl9EEcsoE For sure: there is potential in Linked Open Data Real innovation will be in the combination of data sets: open, enterprise, private, … PiLOD 2.0 – The Sequel Observation: Not yet ready….
