Rood of dood van David Peace Rood of dood is een roman geïnspireerd op de legendarische voetbalcoach Bill Shankly, de voormalige manager van FC Liverpool. Toen Shankly in 1959 aantrad als manager van de club, speelde Liverpool in de Engelse tweede divisie en hadden ze nog nooit een prijs gewonnen. Vijftien jaar laten won de ploeg onder zijn leiding drie kampioenschappen en groeide Liverpool uit tot de succesvolste en populairste club van Engeland. Shankly werd verafgood, hij inspireerde mensen en hij veranderde ze, zowel de spelers als de supporters. David Peace richt zich in zijn 680 pagina’s tellende roman geheel op zijn hoofdpersoon. Daarmee is Rood of dood niet in de eerste plaats een ‘voetbalroman’, maar een boek over het leven zelf, over principes en keuzes, over liefdes en teleurstellingen, wensen en prestaties. David Peace (1967) groeide op in Yorkshire en woont sinds 1994 met zijn vrouw en kinderen in Tokyo. Met zijn roman GB84 won hij de James Tait Black Memorial Prize For Fiction en in 2006 was hij de winnaar van Der Deutsche Krimi Preis met Nineteen Seventy Four. Zijn vorige roman over voetbal, The Damned United was een groot succes en werd verfilmd.
