The Legend of the Saltire
The St Andrew’s Cross or Saltire is Scotland’s national flag. Tradition has it that
the flag, the white saltire on a blue background, the oldest flag in Europe and the
Commonwealth, originated in a battle fought in East Lothian in the Dark Ages.
It is believed that the battle took place in the year 832AD. An army of Picts under
Angus mac Fergus, High King of Alba, and aided by a contingent of Scots led by Eochaidh (Kenneth mac Alpin’s grandfather) had been on a punitive raid into Lothian
(then and for long afterwards Northumbrian territory), and were being pursued by
a larger force of Angles and Saxons under one Athelstan.
The Albannach/Scots were caught and stood to face their pursuers in the area of
Markle, near East Linton. This is to the north of the modern village of Athelstaneford (which was resited on higher ground in the 18th century), where the Peffer,
which flows into the Firth of Forth at Aberlady, forms a wide vale. Being then
wholly undrained, the Peffer presented a major obstacle to crossing, and the two
armies came together at the ford near the present day farm of Prora (one of the
field names there is still the Bloody Lands).
Fearing the outcome of the encounter, King Angus led prayers for deliverance, and
was rewarded by seeing a cloud formation of a white saltire (the diagonal cross
on which St Andrew had been martyred) against a blue sky. The king vowed that
if, with the saint’s help, he gained the victory, then Andrew would thereafter be
the patron saint of Scotland. The Scots did win, and the Saltire became the flag of
Scotland.
When Kenneth mac Alpin, who may have been present with his grandfather at
the battle, later united Picts and Scots and named the entity Scotland, Andrew did
indeed become the patron saint of the united realm. Kenneth mac Alpin, King of
Scots and Picts, Ard-righ Albainn, was laid to rest on Iona in 860AD.

Keltfest 2014
Dordrecht, Hollandsche Biesbosch, zaterdag 31 mei.
Keltfest blijft een belevenis op zich! Net als voorgaande jaren weet je al bij het
parkeren van de auto dat je op de juiste plek bent: op de fiets komen volledig in
stijl uitgedoste bezoekers langs en waar je ook kijkt, lopend naar de ingang, heeft
menigeen zijn best gedaan Keltfest gepast te gaan bezoeken.
Deze zaterdag liet de zon zich van zijn beste kant zien hetgeen resulteerde in een
grote toestroom van festivalgangers. Ook het terrein was mooi droog zodat overal
kleedjes neergelegd waren waarop lekker genoten werd van het weer, het formidabele eten, de lekkerste drankjes, de muziek op meerdere podia, dans en vooral
van het mede-publiek. Van middeleeuwse kledij tot gothic, van heksen tot elfen,
van ‘gewoon’ tot heel bijzonder en - zoals het leek - meer kiltdragers dan anders.
De muziekliefhebbers waren dit jaar zeker niet voor niks gekomen. Er kon genoten
worden van Orfeo, Finvarra, Scrum, The Royal Spuds, Rapalje, The Lowland Paddies, Kelten zonder grenzen, Míl of Spain, Sowulo, William, Robert den Hartigh,
The Lasses en Celtann. Een of beide dagen speelden deze muzikanten op een van
de drie opgestelde podia.
Uiteraard was werd er weer veel aandacht geschonken aan balfolk en was er voor de
meegenomen kinderen Kidshill. Tekenen, spelletjes doen, bellen blazen, dansen,
gelukskaboutertjes maken en een speurtocht. Het was allemaal mogelijk!
Ook aan de allerkleinsten was goed gedacht: een veilige speelplek en voor ouders
gelegenheid om te verschonen en een flesje of hapje op te warmen.
Naast dit alles was er weer een groot gedeelte ingericht voor de re-enactment groepen en was er een ruime keuze aan stands met sieraden, kleding, mede, eten en
drinken.

Molenhoek, landgoed, Jachtslot Mookerheide, zondag 1 juni.
Helaas konden wij zaterdag niet aanwezig zijn bij de contests van de pipe bands.
Daarom hopen wij maar dat de Nederlandse Organisatie van Doedelzakbands volgend jaar het Jachtslot weer verkiest voor de Continentals want volgens zeggen
was het een groots spektakel! Circa 15 pipe bands uit Nederland, België en Duitsland streden om de titel. De uitslagen zijn te vinden op: novdb.nl
Hoewel het de afgelopen twee keer dat wij het Scottish Event bezochten aardig
regende, was het dit jaar goed vertoeven. Het grote aantal bezoekers kon op de
zondag de solo doedelzak- en drumcompetities aanschouwen en genieten van de
over de dag verspreide dansvoorstellingen en optredens van de band Beithar.
Naast de Scottish Barn verzorgde Carpe Diem Hunting Games, een soort jachtspel
waarbij met pijl en boog geschoten wordt en in de binnentuin werden whiskyproeverijen gegeven door Geert Akkers.
Zeker ook aan de kinderen was dit jaar goed gedacht. Zij konden o.a. kleuren, knutselen, beschilderd worden, vermaakt worden door een aantal clowns en capriolen
uithalen op het springkussen. En er was zelfs een heuse magicus!
Voor een ieder die dit jaar niet in de gelegenheid was het Scottish Event bij te
wonen, raden wij aan de website van het jachtslot goed in de gaten te houden voor
de data van volgend jaar.

Schotland is niet alleen maar de welbekende Highlands. In het Zuiden is het landschap heel anders. Edinburgh en Glasgow zijn bijvoorbeeld heel bijzondere steden.
En ook de Schotse eilanden zijn de moeite van een bezoek zeker waard!
Zuid-Schotland, kastelen in een prachtig landschap
Op weg naar de Highlands worden de Lowlands vaak overgeslagen. Jammer, want
ook daar is veel te beleven.
Het landschap in de Lowlands is prachtig glooiend, met moerassen en bossen. En
er is heel veel ruimte om te spelen.
In het gebied ‘The Borders’ in Zuid-Schotland is veel gevochten tegen de Engelsen.
Veel kastelen en ruïnes zijn daar nog overgebleven getuigen van. Bezoek hier ook
eens Melrose Abbey of Thirlestane Castle waar ook een avonturen speeltuin is.
Van vijandigheid is nu al lang geen sprake meer. In de vele leuke dorpjes en stadjes
zul je alleen maar vriendelijke Schotten aantreffen.
Edinburgh en Glasgow, ook heel leuk voor kinderen
De prachtige stad Edinburgh (‘Eddinbruh’) moet je gezien hebben tijdens je vakantie in Schotland. De Middeleeuwse straatjes en het kasteel in de stad zijn heerlijk
om rond te dwalen.

Daarbij zijn er, ook voor kinderen, erg leuke musea en bezienswaardigheden. Het
Edinburgh museum bijvoorbeeld of het Childhood museum.
Ook kun je een heuse spooktocht door de stad maken... deels ondergronds...
Bovendien zijn de kinderen ook in pubs welkom. Er zijn er die hiervoor speciale
stickers op de ramen geplakt hebben: “Children welcome”. Daar is vaak een aparte
ruimte voor gezinnen ingericht.

Glasgow, de tweede stad van Schotland, is een heel andere stad. Van oorsprong een
industriestad, maar er zijn ook mooie plekjes. Zo zijn er de botanische tuinen, de
kathedraal en de haven.
Voor kinderen is vooral het Science Center erg leuk. En natuurlijk M&D pretpark,
dat met een groot indoor gedeelte ook een goede keuze is bij minder goed weer.
De Highlands
De regio waar Schotland het meest bekend om is: de Highlands. Hoewel de echte
Highlands zich in het Noorden bevinden, starten ze al vlak boven Glasgow in de
Western Highlands.
De highlands zijn prachtig om te ontdekken. Maak mooie tochten langs Bens,
Glens en Lochs (bergen, valleien en meren). Loch Lomond is de grootste en een
heerlijk meer om aan te vertoeven.
Houden je kinderen wel van een beetje spanning en avontuur, vertel ze dan over
het monster van Loch Ness. Ga daar met een bootje het meer op, op zoek naar dit
monster... Wel de fototoestellen bij de hand houden!
In de bergen vind je ook watervallen, zoaks Shin Falls en Rogie Falls. Zalmen springen hier tegen de stroom in omhoog.

Bezoek ook het prachtige Stirling Castle, neem een kijkje bij de Highlandgames, of
ga eens op een jeepsafari. Er is in de Highlands enorm veel te beleven.
Eilanden en strand
Minder bekend, maar Schotland heeft ook stranden. Dankzij de warme golfstroom
is het in de zomer heerlijk toeven op de stranden en eilanden aan de westkust van
Schotland.
Naast die stranden is er op de eilanden ontzettend veel te zien. Ieder eiland is
anders en allemaal de een ontdekkingstocht waard.
Het eiland Skye is 80 km lang, met hoge pieken en kliffen en voor ieder wat wils.
Ben je de natuur even zat? Er is een otteropvang en een speelgoedmuseum om lekker in rond te neuzen en te spelen.
De ruige natuur is waar Mull bekend om staat, maar er is ook een stoomtreintje dat
je naar Torosay Castle brengt, waar voor kinderen van alles te doen is. Bezoek ook
eens de hoofdstad van het eiland, Tobermory, en bewonder de in allerlei kleuren
beschilderde huizen.
Langs de oostkust van Schotland zijn geen eilanden en ook weinig strand. Hier
zijn wel baaien waar je, vooral in het Noord-Oosten, dolfijnen en zeehonden kan
spotten.
In Schotland zijn zo’n 600 kastelen, leer doedelzak spelen, proef er whisky en als je
durft... ga “haggis” eten... na het eten pas vragen wat er in zit...
Schotland, voor ieder wat wils en dus zeker ook voor kinderen!

Een ontspannen rondreis waarbij u Schotland ontdekt vanuit drie prachtige vakantieparken die midden in de mooie natuur liggen. U start in de heuvels en bossen rondom het romantische meer Loch Lomond, waarna u een week de tijd heeft
om de Northern Highlands te verkennen. Aan de kust vindt u kreken vol vogels,
zandstranden met zeehonden en baaien waarin dolfijnen zwemmen. Landinwaarts strekt het overweldigende berglandschap zich uit. Vervolgens reist u door

Het hart van de Schotse Hooglanden is een gebied van bergen, meren, snelstromende rivieren en kastelen. Behalve genieten van veel natuurschoon rond Loch
Tummel en Loch Rannoch kunt u een whiskystokerij bezoeken en een excursie
maken naar de prachtige stad Perth. Natuurlijk mag in het land van de vele legenden een bezoek aan het Loch Ness niet ontbreken. In het ruige noorden van
Schotland kunt u zeehonden langs de Noordzeestranden zien liggen, maar vergeet
de zuidwest kust niet. Vanuit Androssan kunt u met de ferry eenvoudig Brodick,
Isle of Arran, bereiken.
“Mama had ons van tevoren het verhaal van het monster van Loch Ness verteld. Ook wij
hebben staan turen naar het meer, maar helaas hebben we niks kunnen vinden.
Maar... we hebben het monster wel meegenomen naar huis in de vorm van een sleutelhanger.”

Deze gezinsreis brengt u van de westkust van Schotland naar de prachtige Schotse
Hooglanden. U verblijft in een comfortabele stacaravan op vier verschillende vakantieparken met faciliteiten en vertier voor jong en oud. Van hieruit kunt u allerlei leuke tochten ondernemen, naar de bergen in het Galloway Forest Park, met
een ferry naar de eilanden Arran of naar de hoofdstad van de Highlands: Inverness. Ga ook mountainbiken, zwemmen of langs het strand wandelen, naar de Zoo
of naar een middeleeuws kasteel.

folkmuziek.
Het park heeft een hoge gastenwaardering en is populair bij Nederlanders.

Centraal in Dailly en op ca. 9 km vanaf Girvan. De afstand vanaf Edinburgh is ca.

Vakantiepark Seton Sands Holiday Park
Longniddry ligt aan de oostkust van Zuid-Schotland, aan de Firth of Forth. Uitstapjes kunt u maken naar de hoofdstad Edinburgh, de ruïnes van Dirleton Castle
en ook de kustplaats North Berwick, waar u boottochten kunt maken of het 15e
eeuwse fort kunt bezoeken. Seton Sands is een populair familiepark.

Ligging
Op ca. 1,5 km vanaf het centrum van Longniddry. De afstand vanaf Edinburgh is

U heeft de keuze uit een Superior, Deluxe en Prestige stacaravan voor maximaal

met een extra slaapkamer met 2 aparte bedden of een stapelbed beschikbaar
(maximum bezetting 4 volwassenen en 2 kinderen).

akoestisch optreed en steeds het contact zoekt met zijn publiek.
U kunt Jouke MacAuckema solo boeken maar ook als duo onder de naam
King’s Court, samen met Janny Ireland, of voor de grotere locaties als
band onder de naam Loarns Four.

Dag 1 aankomst op Edinburgh airport, neem de bus of taxi naar Edinburgh centraal station
(20 minuten) en neem de trein naar Inverness. Na een fantastische pittoreske reis aankomst
in het centrum van de stad, een taxi naar uw accommodatie, relaxen, bagage afgeven en de
rest van de namiddag/avond gebruiken om te ontdekken en dineren.
Dag 2 een ochtend uitstapje. Van het VVV-kantoor wordt u opgehaald door de toeringcar
die u naar de River Ness Jacobite Loch Ness Cruises brengt (bij de reis inbegrepen). U vaart
door het loch naar Urquhart castle om de ruïnes van dit kasteel, ooit een van de grootste van
de highlands, te bezoeken. Ruimschoots de tijd voor een bezoek, te winkelen en wat te eten.
De bus wacht u op om u terug te brengen naar Inverness. Eenmaal aangekomen, neem een
taxi naar Culloden Battlefield waar Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746 werd verslagen (zijn enige
nederlaag) door de Engelsen. Hier een bezoek aan het fantastische museum, gevolgd door
een wandeling met een gids over The Battlefield Moor. Terug wanneer u dat wilt naar Inverness per taxi. De rest van de dag vrij te besteden om de vele winkels te ontdekken, pubs,
wandelingen langs de rivier, touristische attracties. Overnachting in Inverness.
Dag 3 opnieuw naar de trein, in zuidelijke richting naar de in de Perthshire highland gelegen stad Pitlochry. Hier zijn twee whisky distilleerderijen (Edradour & Bells), theater, visladder, tuinen, winkels en restaurants. Een Victoriaanse vakantiestad! Als u zin hebt een balletje
golf slaan. Ook het beroemde Heathergems Centre bevindt zich hier: sieranden en snuisterijen gemaakt van heide. Een alleraardigst pension voor uw overnachting.
Dag 4 Opties voor vandaag zijn: per locale bus naar Blair Castle of per touringcar naar
Dewar world of whisky in Aberfeldy, the Crannog (oude boven het water gebouwde huizen),
Killin en de Falls of Dochart, pittoreske stroomversnellingen met plaatselijke dorpspub, erg
pittoresk. Overnachting in Pitlochry.
Dag 5 een laatste treinreis, deze keer naar Edinburgh. De resterende tijd van de dag besteden aan het ontdekken van onze hoofdstad, zoveel te zien en te doen. Hier overnachten.
Dag 6 we zullen u vele ideeën aanreiken voor uw tijd hier in Edinburgh. Overnachting in

Dag 7 helaas, een vlucht huiswaarts!
Strathyre Forest Holidays Cabins is een geweldig vakantiepark in Schotland. Het
park ligt tussen Loch Lubnaig en de heuvels, dicht bij Loch Lomond en The Trossachs National Park. De luxe huisjes zijn volledig uit hout opgetrokken en passen
perfect in de natuurlijke omgeving. Uw gezelschap bestaat, met wat geluk, uit herten, dassen en eekhoorns. Onder leiding van een ranger kunt u diverse activiteiten
ondernemen, waarbij de kinderen (en uzelf!) de natuur ontdekken.

attracties zoals het smalspoortreintje bij Rannoch Moor, whiskystokerijen, de watervallen van Moness en Loch Tummel. In de rivier de Tummel zijn uitstekende
vismogelijkheden. Het gezellige, Victoriaanse stadje Pitlochry ligt op ca. 20 km.
Vanaf het bekende Queen’s View heeft u een prachtig uitzicht over de omgeving.

Golf, paardrijden en veel meer
Westkust & Highlands en Edinburgh | Zelf rijden
Dag 1 aankomst op Edinburgh airport, haal uw van tevoren geboekte huurauto op, rijd
westwaarts via een vastgestelde route (dat zullen wij voor u doen) door een steeds wisselend landschap naar de westkust, Loch Lomond en Loch Fynne passerend naar Inveraray,
waar u overnacht in een erg prettig in familiebezit zijnd hotel - een van onze favorieten.
Dag 2 een dag landschap en bezienswaardigheden ontdekken in de omgeving, the Crinan
Canal. Kintyre, in Inverary zelf bevinden zich een Victoriaanse gevangenis, kasteel (hoofdkwartier van Clan Campbell), wandelingen en kleine winkeltjes. Overnachting in Inveraray.
Dag 3 historische rondreis vandaag, rijdend langs de kust naar Kilmartin Glen, 5000 jaar
oude staande stenen, grafheuvels, oude graven, village Kirk (dorpskerk) en pub. Fantastisch
landschap als u richting Oban rijdt. 13 Kilometer voortijdig linksaf slaan naar Seil Island,
over de “bridge across the Atlantic”, erg pittoresk met een pub naast de brug. Terug naar de
hoofdweg op naar Oban, zeevis hoofdstad van Schotland. Overnachting hier.
Dag 4 opties: rijd oostwaarts naar Glencoe en Fort William, of een veerboot naar het eiland
Mull. Beide opties zullen u goed bevallen, overnachting in Oban.
Voor onze gasten met interesse in traditioneel Schotse ervaringen hebben we een
18 holegolfbaan, een schietbaan en een paardrijcentrum. Of als u de adrenaline
wilt voelen stromen, ons 4x4-terrein en quadpiste zijn altijd een succes.
Het gebied rond het hotel heeft vele toeristische attracties, zoals Schotlands oudste whiskydistillerie (The Famous Grouse Experience) en historische sites waaronder het Drummond Castle. Het hotelpersoneel weet u te vertellen wat er vlakbij is
en hoe u erheen kunt.
En als u gewoon komt om te ontspannen, is de victoriaanse spa voor volwassenen
de ideale verwennerij. Met een verwarmd zwembad, sauna, stoombad en spabad is

Prince Charlie’s Pancakes
It is unlikely that Bonnie Prince Charlie made pancakes using his precious
recipe for the drink which later became known as Drambuie. But there is no
doubt that the addition of a liqueur, made from the finest Scotch malt whisky,
sweetened with a hint of heather honey and flavoured with herbs, makes this
a lot more than a humble pancake!
Ingredients
125g plain (all-purpose) flour
2 beaten eggs
300ml milk
25g lard (shortening)
85g butter or margarine
125g caster (superfine) sugar
30ml Drambuie
Pinch of salt
Grated rind and juice from 3 large oranges and from two large lemons
Method
Sift the flour and salt into a bowl and make a hollow in the centre. Stir in the beaten eggs and half the milk and beat until you have a smooth batter. Then slowly
stir in the other half of the milk. Melt a little lard in an 8 inch (20cm) frying pan
(skillet). Pour in enough batter to cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan so
that it becomes evenly coated. Fry (sauté) for a few minutes until bubbles appear
on the surface. Turn the pancakes over and cook the other side. Then slide on to a
tea towel (dish cloth) and keep warm. Make more pancakes in the same way until
the batter is used up (there should be enough for about eight pancakes). Melt the
butter (or margarine) in another frying pan (skillet), then stir in the sugar and
cook for one minute. Add the grated rind and juice of the oranges and lemons and
bring to the boil. Then add the Drambuie and simmer gently for three minutes.
Fold the pancakes into quarters and place in the frying pan. Cook gently for three
minutes, spooning the sauce over the top, until heated through. Serve immediately. Allow the mixture and chocolate to cool and cut into squares.
St Fillan’s Fruit Pudding
St Fillan’s is a Perthshire village at the eastern end of Loch Earn. Here is a
recipe which originated many years ago in the Scottish Women’s Rural Institute. The quantities are sufficient for 4/6 people, depending on appetites!
Ingredients
125g flour
50g fine granulated sugar
Half teaspoon baking soda
Half teaspoon cream of tartar
Pinch of salt
40g butter or margarine
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
One pound stewed fruit (eg apples, pear, rhubarb, gooseberries or figs etc)
Method
Mix together the dry ingredients and then rub in the butter. Mix (but don’t beat)
the white and yolk of the eggs, make a well in the centre of the flour mixture and
add the eggs. Mix to a thick batter adding milk as required.
Place the stewed fruit along with their juices in the foot of an oven-proof dish.
Drop in the batter on top in spoonfuls.
Bake in a pre-heated oven at 375F (190C or Gas Mark 5) for half an hour or until
the paste has risen and turned golden and cooked through. Serve warm or cold.

new distillery planned
There seems to have been a spate of new distilleries planned, being built or just
opened. The latest announcement is a joint venture to build a £6.7m micro-distillery in Glenrothes. The partners include the Indian drinks group Kyndal and

Some of the money (£1.6m) is coming from the Scottish government’s Food Processing Marketing and Co-operation Scheme. More is being provided by Scottish
Enterprise in the form of a £240,000 Regional Selective Assistance grant to support employment. What is a little surprising is the speed with which the partners
expect to generate substantial revenues. They estimate that the project will produce exports worth £3.6m over the next three years.

confirming the Scottish Government’s backing for the sector. Earlier this year for
instance, the Adelphi Distillery received £1.8m towards the cost of a new facility
on Ardnamurchan. The Ballindalloch Distillery in Aberdeenshire was also awarded
£1.27m, the Falkirk Whisky Distillery at Polmont was given £444,000 and Anniston Farms Distiller at Lunan in Angus got £292,000.

Then there’s the new distillery in Dumfriesshire. Annandale is a restoration project. The original whisky was produced from 1830 to 1919 when the distillery
closed. But the premises remained and work is now nearing completion to bring it
back into production early in 2014.

Kingsbarns Distillery in the East Neuk of Fife is well under way. They plan to start
production next year.
In April, Moray Council approved plans for a major new distillery in Speyside to
be built by the French-owned drinks company, Chivas Brothers Ltd. The firm proposed creating a new facility on the site of the Imperial distillery near Carron.
The original distillery buildings have already been demolished and the site has lain
abandoned for the past 14 years.

anston distillery voor een rondleiding en iets te proeven. Hier vandaan naar Perth, waar we

Dag 2 een halve dag whisky school bij de kleinste distilleerderij in Schotland: Strathearn,
een echte handen-uit-de-mouwen leerzame aanpak over het maken van whisky. Lunchpauze, dan op naar Glenturret distillery, thuis van the Glenturret single malt en Famous Grouse.
Terug naar Perth, overnachting. Het zou kunnen zijn dat we in tegengestelde richting gaan.
Dag 3 rijden naar Aberfeldy, we beginnen de dag bij Dewar’s World of Whisky, een halve
dag whisky school hier. Gevolgd door tijd voor lunch and een uitstapje door het landschap.
Terug naar Perth, overnachting. Whiskyproeverij in uw hotel deze avond.
Dag 4 een laatste dag, vroeg Perth verlatend en op naar Edinburgh, waar alle gasten een

The BenRiach Distillery Company is delighted to celebrate its tenth birthday today
(April 29).
Back in 2004, Billy Walker and his two South African partners Geoff Bell and
Wayne Kieswetter purchased BenRiach, turning it into one of Scotland’s most admired distilleries.
At the time, renowned whisky writer Jim Murray said: “It was with delight, while
sworn to secrecy, that I witnessed BenRiach gaining its independence, when a
team led by the experienced and infectiously enthusiastic Billy Walker acquired the
Distillery. This independence will allow BenRiach to unlock its secrets and bring its
fine and surprising malts officially to the market in their natural state for the first
time. There cannot be a single true lover of whisky who will not rejoice because
of it.”
Production was resumed almost immediately. On August 7 that year, the first bottling of BenRiach under the new company took place while on September 20 the
first distillation under the new owners was filled to cask.
Four years later BenRiach acquired GlenDronach. Announcing the purchase, Billy
Walker said: “We hope our acquisition of GlenDronach will intrigue, surprise and
delight whisky connoisseurs around the world. GlenDronach is a bit of a sleeping
giant and we look forward to breathing new life into it, giving it the attention and
commitment it deserves.”
Two years later the company launched a five-line bottling plant in Newbridge before making its latest acquisition last year. Glenglassaugh, the renowned Highland
single malt with its rich and distinguished heritage, was added to the expanding
Highland and Speyside portfolio.
The firm currently employs 120 people across its four sites.

Over the ten years the three brands have won numerous prestigious awards including “Best International Business Award” in the 2005 Enterprising Scotland Awards
and “Distillery of the Year” in the 2007 Malt Advocate Awards.
Most recently, BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh won five main awards
and a total of twelve medals in the 2013 Malt Maniacs Awards following that up
with 10 medals at last year’s International Wine and Spirits Competition, with all
three brands scooping major awards.
Reflecting on the first highly successful decade, Billy Walker said: “We find ourselves in one of the golden periods of the industry. There’s unprecedented demand
for high-end brands in places like Taiwan, Scandinavia, USA, China, India, Russia,

Arran Brewery have submitted a bid to purchase the assets of Bladnoch Distillery
near Wigtown, which went into administration earlier this year.
It is thought that there was considerable interest in the distillery, which is being
sold by Administrator Ernst & Young.
Arran Brewery previously had to abandon a bid to purchase the former site of
Rosebank Distillery in Falkirk when Falkirk Council decided to classify the site as
“Abandoned”. This was despite getting the offer of a £500,000 grant from Scottish
Heritage and a likely grant from the lottery commission.
Managing Director Gerald Michaluk said: “We were extremely disappointed at
the council’s decision in Falkirk to classify the site as abandoned even when their
own report showed we passed four of the five tests of whether or not the site was
Abandoned and our legal team made a strong argument for overturning their only
reason for considering the site abandoned.
“However, our investor partners are willing to support us in the purchase of Bladnoch distillery . We will know in the next few weeks whether our bid is going to be
taken any further.”
Earlier this year, Arran Brewery sold 0.2% of the company for £160,000 valuing
the company on paper at least at £80m, in the first round of a fund-raising exercise
aimed at raising £4m. This combined with other investments saw the company
raise £260,000.
The brewery has recently purchased two sites :one at St Fillans, Loch Earn, a former hotel which is being refurbished as the Loch Earn Brewery, Hotel and Visitor
Centre; the other in Dreghorn, North Ayrshire, a former school, is awaiting planning consent to be refurbished as Scotland’s first Sake brewery, and Research and
Development Centre and will house a bottling facility.

The original meaning of the name “Dai leas dubh” means “Field by the Black Water
fall” or “BlackWaterValley”, although some accounts list the Gaelic name as “Dalais
Dubh”. William de Ripley (1165-1215) was given lands on Dallas, Scotland by King
William the Lion. The distillery was briefly known as “Dallasmore” and the distillery was for a time served by the now defunct Forres to Avimore rail line. In it’s time
the output from the Dunnage warehouses contributed to the blends of Roderick
Dhu and Benmore.
The construction of the distillery was commenced in 1898 on the estate of Alexander Edward of Sanquhar who was a prominent Speyside distiller. Early on (sometime in 1898 or 99) Edward sold the rights to the distillery to the blending firm
Wright & Greig Ltd of Glasgow and the architect was the famed Charles Doig.
In 1921 after one other owner (JP O’Brian & Co) the distillery was sold to Benmore Distillers Ltd, an English consortium who also owned Benmore and Lochhead distilleries in Campbeltown and Lochindaal distillery on Islay and in 1929
DCL took over Benmore Distillers.

On April 9th, 1939 a fire destroyed the still house and much of the equipment
however later in 1939 the still house was rebuilt.
The distillery was extended in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Electricity did not reach Dallas Dhu until the 1950’s and the water wheel still contributed to the power pool
into the 1970’s.
At the same time in 1983 that Dallas Dhu was closed by the Distillers Company
Limited, they also closed Banff, Brora, Glen Albyn, Glen Mhor, Knockdhu, NorthPort and St. Magdalene.
Dallas Dhu has been operated as a non working distillery museum by Historic
Scotland since 1988 and also includes a shop, picnic area and refreshments. The
tour is in the self guided audio-visual style and full details including open times
can seen at historic-scotland.gov.uk .
The water source for the distillery was the Altyre Burn which is known locally as
the Scourie Burn.
Sadly, the license to distill was returned in 1992 however visitors comment that
the distillery looks like it could start production anytime as all the plant and equipment are in place.

Plans for what will be the 9th whisky distillery on an isle which is regarded as the
Mecca of whisky have been revealed. Gartbreck Distillery will be built at Saltpan
Point on the site of an old farm located on the shore of Loch Indaal near Bowmore,
on the isle of Islay on the Western coast of Scotland.

Gartbreck Distillery will be unique in reviving the traditional method of whisky
making which had been abandoned for the benefit of cost efficiency. Its two pots
stills which will be overlooking the sea through a large glass gable will be direct
heated with a live flame, it will use worm tub condensers and fermentation of the
wash will take place in Oregon Pine wooden washbacks. This has nothing to do
with nostalgia, the reasons of those choices being this is how Jean Donnay who
has now completed the design of the distillery wants to make whisky since he believes this is how he should do in order to obtain the specific character he is aiming
at.
His belief is largely based on his experience of having previously designed Glann ar
Mor Distillery in Brittany under the very same lines, and having operated it successfully since 2005. Its whiskies have earned wide recognition with in particular
five “Liquid Gold Awards” in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, and he has been named
“Distillery Manager of the Year 2014” at the “Icons of Whisky – Rest of the World”
for his distillery in Brittany.

Although reverting to time proven methods, Gartbreck’s bespoke equipment will
include some technical evolution allowing in particular to significantly minimize
the drawbacks usually associated with the direct heating of the stills. The distillery’s water will flow by gravity from Grunnd Loch which overlooks the distillery
900m away from it, and the floor malting and the kiln will allow to produce 20% of
its needs in peated malt in using local barley from the isle.

the initial period when the distillery’s whisky will not yet be available.
The highest attention has been paid by the local architects and designers to respect
the exceptional location, the distillery’s building keeping a sleek silhouette for a
smooth integration in the landscape. Once it will be operating at nominal capacity
the distillery will be producing 55.000 LPA per year. One type of Single Malt will be
produced, offering a highly peaty character for which Islay whiskies are so famous.
The new distillery will see up to 10 jobs being created. Planning Permission has
been granted by the Argyll and Bute Council and it is hoped that the fundings of
the 2.5M£ investment will be completed in time to start work during the third
quarter 2014, with an aim to have the distillery starting operation by autumn
2015.

The seeds of the trade in the Far East were planted in the 1930s and one of the
driving forces behind the emerging industry was a mild-mannered woman from
Kirkintilloch, Rita Taketsuru - still celebrated as the ‘mother of Japanese whisky’.
Jessie Roberta ‘Rita’ Cowan’s place in history was assured the day she met Japanese student Masataka Taketsuru while he was teaching her younger brother jujitsu at the family home in Middlecroft.
Romance soon blossomed between Rita and Masataka, who had come to Scotland
in 1919 to learn how to make whisky and study science at Glasgow University, and
the couple married at Calton Registry Office in 1920.
They moved to Campbeltown, where Masataka learned his trade at the Hazelburn
distillery, before returning to Japan in 1923.
Rita set about honing her Japanese and teaching English, while Masataka helped
build a whisky distillery for the Shinjiro Torii group - a post he soon left when
it became clear they were not interested in making ‘proper’ whisky, but rather a
cheap alternative that would turn a good profit.
The couple faced an uncertain future but, thanks to Rita’s contacts built up through
teaching, they found financial backers to start their own business.
In 1934 Masataka set up Dai Nippon Kaju KK, later to become the Nikka Whisky
Distilling Company, in Yoichi on Japan’s inhospitable North Island - a location
chosen because of its similarity to Scotland and its proximity to the barley, peat,
coal and water required for the perfect dram.

Rita played a huge part in the success of the distillery, which turned its first profit
in 1940, until her death in 1961.
In the intervening years, World War II proved a difficult period for the couple their home was raided by suspicious police and Rita was shunned by neighbours
who thought her a spy. But the war was also the making of the distillery.
With imported Scottish whisky banned, drinkers turned to native alternatives and
the company flourished. In the years that followed the war, Rita played a significant role in the revival of good relations between Britain and Japan.
The couple had no children of their own, but adopted Masataka’s nephew, Takeshi
– who visited Scotland in 2002 to celebrate the first bottling of a Japanese whisky
by the Scottish Malt Whisky Society.
In the years since the couple’s death Masataka’s genius has been recognised by
experts. In 2007 a bottle of ‘Taketsuru’ was voted the world’s best blended malt,
while a year later his company’s 20-year-old ‘Yoichi’ was awarded the title of the
world’s best single malt.
The company’s founders will never be forgotten. A mock-up of Rita’s Kirkintilloch
living room is a key exhibit in the distillery museum and there is even a Rita Taketsuru Fan Club in Japan. Just last year the Japan Times ran a two-page feature on
Rita’s influence on whisky-making.
She was buried on the hillside overlooking the distillery - a spot which remains a
place of pilgrimage for lovers of fine whisky the world over.

LAPHROAIG SELECT
Laphroaig Select takes its name from the special selection of American and European casks, chosen for their unique character that they give during maturation.
Our Inspiration for our new Global expression has been take from history – 70-80
years ago, the time of the last family member owner of the distillery, Ian Hunter.
Ian was one of the biggest influences in the history of Laphroaig indeed he was
one of the first distillers to travel to bourbon county in the USA to identify new
sources of casks that would give him greater consistency as well as new flavours.
He later married this ‘new’ style of Laphroaig with his traditionally matured (European cask) Laphroaig.
Inspired by his early work , we have used Olorosso sherry butts, straight American
white oak (non-filled with bourbon), PX seasoned hogs heads, Quarter Casks and
finally of course First Filled Bourbon Casks. This varied cask maturation technique
enabled us to create 6 new flavour combinations that were then tested with our
FOL’s to choose their favourite style and indeed name. The winning flavour and
name chosen by you is LAPHROAIG SELECT.
TASTING NOTES
COLOUR: A Fully Natural colour with no caramel added, it is sparkling gold with
layers of colour - arising from different maturations and oils mixing together.
NOSE: Peat first, then ripe red fruits from the PX and Olorosso casks. A hint of
dryness next from the American oak with a long lingering florally finish - Marzipan
and even limes at the end.
PALATE: This full bodied whisky is initially sweet up front- matching the nose,
then the classic dry, peaty, ashy flavours come bounding in followed by a lovely rich
finish arising from the rich fruits of the European casks.

WEST COAST WHISKY TOUR
MAY 2014
Our friends from Finland (Malt Whisky Association of Finland) once again came
on tour with us, this time for a scenic west coast whisky tour.
We started in Glasgow, driving to Oban, where the first distillery visit had been
arranged; Oban distillery, a good tour and taste. At 5pm we had a whisky tasting
at the Oban whisky/wine shop, 3 good drams including Tobermory, really good!
Group dinner followed, a good first day!
Taking the 09.55 ferry to the Isle of Mull, first stop; Duart castle, home to the
Macleans! A good and interesting tour here we had 7 in the group purchase the
Maclean gathering special whisky; chosen by Charlie Maclean, and Adelphi 18 yo
Tobermory. As Paul was on hand, he introduced his chief to the group, who signed
the bottles! Nice touch, he has not signed that many, so a good keepsake. From
here to Tobermory, our next distillery tour. We all stayed in Tob overnight, met up
at Macgochans pub for dinner and drinks, many thanks Neil for the drams!
Day 3 we had to alter plans somewhat (in advance 2 days earlier) as calmac had
changed the ferry to a much smaller boat, for the sail to Ardnamurchan, meaning
we had sent our coach the night before on a round trip, to meet us at the ferry next
day - it couldnee fit on this wee ferry!
After a dram on the ferry, we met the coach and drove via tiny roads to Adelphi
distillery, for a good tour and a great tasting. Not quite up and running yet, but we
did taste two really good drams before sadly departing. From here to Glenuig and
lunch! Before our next and final ferry to the Isle of Skye. First call on the island;
Gaelic whiskies, a good range of whisky at this independent bottler. Highlight (for
the very few) was a 30 year old, now no longer available - superb! From here the
hour drive to our hotel, which by the way, had 400 whiskies behind the bar!

Day 4 we headed down to Talisker distillery - why are we here so early (09.30) Liz
asked me, to get an early tour and a longer day I said, she didnee believe me - until
we went in at 09.30!!! Lesley did a great job on our extended tour and extended
taste! Many thanks Lesley, see you again soon. Leaving here for the road bridge
and our lunch stop Eilean Donan castle. Through some rain we headed to Loch
Ness, staying at Drumnadrochit, dining at Fiddlers. Jon did a great job, lots of
great food and whisky, gin, wine and beers! Thanks for my aged drams Jon, went
down smooth! A good night!
Leaving at 9am, we headed through Inverness down to Perth for lunch, followed
by the visit to Scotland’s smallest distillery; Strathearn (not, as the signs says still,
Edradour), here Tony took us through the processes he uses, very traditional, tasted many gins, took lots of photos, a farm setting, surrounded by horses and cattle
(smells). Alas - from here we drove to Glasgow were there was a Scottish Cup Final
being played at Parkhead - the Perth team, St Johnstone won! A final tasting at the
hotel by a good friend of ours, with some very exclusive drams, we cannot mention
- too exclusive! Then to waxy O’Connors pub for dinner. A grand tour, we hope all
went back to Finland happy - we do know a lot of whisky bottles went back!

If you turn to your Barnard and eagerly look up Tamnavulin Distillery, you’ll be
disappointed not to find an entry and this is explained by the fact that the distillery was built in 1965/6 long after Barnard had toured the distilleries of Scotland
in the late 1880’s. The name means Mill on the Hill and the Gaelic version is “Tom
a’Mhulinn”.

The water source is two fold; underground springs at Easterhorn in the local hills
for production providing soft water and cooling water from the nearby river Livet.
Tamnavulin is the only distillery to be situated close to the river Livet.[1] Speyside
distilleries generally source their water from the contorted and folded Dalradian
rocks and granites of Ben Rinnes and Glenlivet. Dalradian rocks include the Grampian group made up of Psammite (impure quartzite) and Quartzite and the Appin
group made up of Limestone, Quartzite and Schists & phyllites.[2]
Tamnavulin Distillery is situated close by the Tomintoul and Braeval Distilleries
and the more famous Glenlivet Distillery and shares the famous Glenlivet prefix.
The distillery was built between 1965 and 1966 and a short 30 years later was
mothballed by the owners, Whyte & MacKay Ltd. Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery

From the start of it’s life Tamnavulin had several ‘stable mates’ including the Invergordon Grain Distillery, the Ben Wyvis Distillery (located within the Invergordon Grain Distillery complex), Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, the Tullibardine
Distillery in Blackford, Perthshire, the remnants and warehouses of the Glenfoyle
Distillery at Dasherhead near Stirling, the Deanston Distillery near Doune, the fellow Speysider Glenallachie Distillery and the nearby Tomintoul Distillery.
The current owners of Tamnavulin, Whyte & Mackay Ltd also own Fettercairn Distillery, Isle of Jura Distillery and Dalmore Distillery. In 1994 Tamnavulin was sold
by Invergordon to Whyte & Mackay Ltd and in the next year, 1995, they mothballed the distillery.
Interestingly Tamnavulin did operate briefly in 2000 for a short period. To quote
Gavin Smith’s article in the fourth quarter edition of the Malt Advocate Robert

The distillery was originally equipped with three wash stills and three spirit stills
both fitted with normal necks. The wash stills have a capacity of 75,500 liters and
the spirit stills have a capacity of 69,600 liters. The peaked canopy full-lauter mash
tun is manufactured of stainless steel with a capacity of 10.52 tonnes of grist and
there are eight stainless steel washbacks that hold a total of 552,000 liters of wash.
The distillery can produce up to 4,000,000 liters of whisky per year.[4]
“I’d learnt lessons from Tamnavulin,” he said. “I was there in 1994 when it was closed
down. I was in charge of both Tomintoul and nearby Tamnavulin. JBB, as the company
then was, took Tamnavulin out of mothballs for six weeks to make spirit in May 2000,

verzamelingen in Italië. Je kunt heerlijk rondneuzen
in de voorraad van Lions Whisky en eventueel nog de
whisky van je dromen aanschaffen.
• Om 16.00 uur gaan we proeven. Diego zal zes of
zeven pareltjes uit vervlogen tijden op tafel zetten die
we onder zijn leiding gaan nosen en tasten.
• Na deze topmiddag gaan we samen dineren en wie
weet komt er nog meer moois op tafel.

“When we shut Tamnavulin down again,” he said, “our remit was to shut it down as
though it was just for a silent season. You empty all the pipe work and the storage vessels. You have it in a state that all you need to do is connect up all the equipment and
go-whether it’s closed for two weeks or two years.”
There is yet hope for Tamnavulin... (subsequent to this article the distillery resumed production in 2007).

From Broughty Ferry (near Dundee) they drove through Aberdeen to Huntly and
on to Dufftown, where a meeting had been scheduled with Mike, owner of the
Dufftown Whisky Shop. It may be that the pair (Liz and Paul) will become involved
in the Autumn whisky festival there, and meeting up with Mike to chat things over
- watch this space for details later. From here through Elgin, Inverness and the
road to Sutherland, passing Benromach, Dalmore, Invergordon and Glenmorangie
distilleries before reaching Caithness, where they stopped overnight at a hotel who
had kindly offered them hospitality. Next morning a guided tour of Old Pulteney
distillery by Malcom; The Old Pulteney distillery is one of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland. It is a windswept location, where the landscape
of the Highlands meets the North Sea, the waves crash against the granite walls
of the harbour. Built in 1826, the Pulteney Distillery is rich in history and atmosphere. The extreme location and unique stills have resulted in a distinctive flavour
- the Genuine Maritime Malt. Liz had a really good taste, bought the shirt, some
whisky and generally had a good time, while Paul was still the driver and got the
drivers share; a sniff! A great tour and meeting some of the staff, a nice day became
even nicer, thanks to Malcom and everyone there.

From here north again to John
O’Groats, a perfect day, clear blue
skies, enabled them to see lots of
Orkney, sitting there just over the
waves, they could almost smell Highland Park and Scapa - och next time.
Some local sightseeing with a bottle
of Kavalan; An elegant, floral, fruity
and seductive dram. With hints of
honey, tropical fruits - mango, pear
drops from school days, vanilla, coconuts and maybe a hint of chocolate. Liz enjoyed a large dram, as soon as the driving was over for the day - Paul caught up!
The highlight of the trip so far; staying at Ackergill Tower, a castle dating back
to the 15h century, beautiful rooms and atmosphere, a grand dinner, wines and
whisky enjoyed with the owners and 30 odd guests, a fine evening.
Day 3 saw the angels heading through the heavy mists passing Clynelish/Brora on
to Glenmorangie, where another private tour took place. The tallest stills in the
business, “what big neck’s they do have granny!” Signet is Paul’s favourite dram
here, a blend of old whisky - distilled over thirty years ago when malting still occurred on site - and spirit matured in a selection of the world’s finest casks, this
undoubtedly is a rich whisky - the exact secret of its production are known only
to the creators, but can tell you that Signet’s sweetness and spiciness is caused
by unique roasted ‘chocolate’ barley malt and the ‘designer casks’ made bespoke
for Glenmorangie from American white oak. Non chill-filtered. Coffee Chocolate
Citrus with a treacle plum pudding, sherry and orange peel. How to describe this
gem; oooooooooooooooooooh!
Och they needed to leave, a few miles away awaited Glen Ord, the nearest distillery
to Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. The young and beautiful Anne took the
private tour, she has been there 9 years, she only looks 21 herself! The Singleton of

Glen Ord is mainly for selected Asian markets only and only available at the Visitor
Centre and Whisky Shop. However, MCLEANSCOTLAND can take you there - and
everywhere else! Glen Ord distillery was founded in 1838, making it one of the
oldest in Scotland and continues to malt its own barley and to use the long fermentation and slow distillation methods followed there for generations. So much
going on here, new stills, wash backs, new buildings, Diageo are pumping money
in here to enlarge the output, so much activity! It will be excellent when finished,
hopefully by the end of the summer.
Sadly, they departed for Forres and their next hotel, a fine country manor, with
a really good whisky bar, Paul was pleased! Day 4 - first port of call; to chat with
Iain at Glen Moray distillery. A few items of business before the usual event - the
purchasing! Although many thanks go to Iain for the bottle - donated to the tour
in two weeks with the malt Whisky Association of Finland, back touring again with
Liz and Paul. And so home… almost 4 hours later back at Broughty Ferry, the unloading took longer than planned, so much whisky, gifts, clothes, not to mention
personal luggage. Result; “a great trip, just a pity we didnee have time for the other
distilleries, Dalmore, Clynelish, Balblair, Benromach, not to mention a plethora in
Speyside and Aberdeenshire, another trip needed!” Paul.

Angels interview a whisky lovin Mudslider! Paul McLean was talking to Ty, from blues band Mudslide.
Paul interviewed Ty over a dram with himself and Julie on a recent Argyll tour.
How you doin Ty, lets get right into it...
When did you start a liking for the blues?
My first memory is as a kid. I was younger than 10 years old & heard ‘Need Your
Love So Bad’ by Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. Even then it blew me away & I knew
I was hearing something very special indeed. Oh man, that tone. It was a truly
beautiful sound & experience, & I remember even then thinking ‘one day, I want
to be able to do THAT’.
And what was your first gig however young?
The late, great Rory Gallagher. I think I was about 16 at the time. Awesome gig, &
I feel very privileged to have actually seen him in concert.
What or who, are the big influences in your music?
Jimmy Page is my ultimate guitar God/hero. Other influences include Neil Young,
Peter Green, Gary Moore, Stevie Ray, Joe Bonamassa, David Gilmour. There are
quite a few more.
Have you met any hero’s of yours?
I once met Ozzy in Fort Augustus. Got my picture taken.
At what point did you realise blues and whisky blended so well?
haha - the legendary pic of Jimmy Page backstage in 1975, glugging from a bottle
of Jack Daniels. I have that pic framed on a wall at home.
There is an image stuck in my head of old blues singers wrapped around a
bottle of Jack Daniels, the music seems so “lyin back sippin an excellent

Is music a “whisky culture” for you and the band?
Definitely. We all like a good dram : but we’re very well behaved & always save it
for after a gig.
Do you have a favourite dram? and why?
Talisker was the one that originally ignited my love of single malts. But I enjoy all
of the Islay malts. Cragganmore is a beauty too, & a real favourite. I did buy a bottle of the amazing ‘Octomore’ from the Bruichladdich distillery, when it came out.

Oh... that would have to be the 30yo Laphroaig. I once tried a 35yo Ardbeg... now

No... but I have now. Thanks for the idea, any “ins” let me know and you are on the
bill playing bottleneck (drinking and clinking that is).
Finally; do you have any track in your set that mentions “angels”? or an
angel? or whisky for that matter?
We are planning on including Joe Bonamassa’s ‘Jockey Full Of Bourbon’ in our
extensive set list. I’m hoping we can start work on this very soon but we may need
(whiskey) research first.

Equipment-wise, I’m a dedicated fan of the classic Les Paul/ Marshall combination. My main guitars are a 1959 Reissue Gibson Les Paul ; a 1981 Gibson Les Paul
Standard ; a Fender Telecaster. My rig is a Marshall JVM410 ( all valve ) head with
a Marshall Vintage 4x12 cabinet. Effects are at an absolute minimum: when you
have that kind of gear you can get pretty much all of the tones & sounds you need.

Whisky Tours. She said the top-shelf drop was fast becoming the next big
thing for the state. “It’s a very casual tour and I think that’s what people
loved about it,” Ms Overeem said. Mark Nicholson from Lark Distillery,
which has operated tours of its facilities for five years, welcomed the new
player, saying whisky tourism in the state had taken another step forward.
“Lark are about to start half-day tours to our distillery twice every weekday
from next week, and Brett Steel has begun his own whisky tour offering to
take people to distillers further afield like Nant near Bothwell, Redlands in
the Derwent Valley, William McHenry & Sons in Port Arthur and Overeem
in Blackmans Bay,” Mr Nicholson said. “The sector is really going through
a surge.” Ms Overeem said although the local industry had grown quickly
there was still huge potential for the state, with producers meeting regularly in a bid to market and brand Tasmania the whisky island of Australia.

Britain’s most northerly distillery is set to begin operations in Shetland
this summer.

The Shetland Distillery Company plans to open its facility at Saxa Vord on Unst
in July.
The firm, headed by industry expert Stuart Nickerson, will eventually produce
both gin and whisky on Unst.
But since any whisky produced in Scotland has to be aged for at least three years,
its first product will be a Shetland gin.
Mr Nickerson said: “We should have the gin still arriving in June and are planning
to produce our first gin in July and launch it in August.
“We will definitely have some Unst-grown botanicals in the gin and plan to eventually grow the majority - if not all the botanicals used in the recipe - on Unst.
“We hope to have the whisky distillery delivered in 2015 and be producing the
same year, which means that the first Scotch Whisky from Shetland would be in
2018.
London-based distillers Blackwood’s failed in its bid to build a distillery on Unst.
The company now markets two varieties of Shetland gin, produced on the mainland.

Now miniature bottles of water from three springs in the Highlands, Islay and
Speyside - matched to local whiskies - are taking the industry by storm abroad.
Retailing at £4 for 100ml, the bespoke bottles are more expensive than many miniatures or poured measures. Uisge Source - uisge being the Gaelic word for water
- said it had experienced a spike in demand from resorts, including the Galaxy
Macau, China’s answer to Las Vegas, and Trump International Golf Club. It said
the Chinese, in particular, appreciated the ritual and “ceremony” of preparing the
drink. Scientists and ­experts say matching water to the whisky is logical, as it has
similar properties and ensures no additional chemicals are introduced. The rock
the water is filtered through gives it different qualities. For example, at St Colman’s
Well in the Highlands, water is filtered through red sandstone and limestone rock
strata, making it hard and rich in minerals and an ideal partner for Highland single

He said: “I was extremely sceptical of these waters at first, very wary. But I had an
epiphany at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. I put the ‘wrong’ water into a glass of
Speyside single malt Glenfarclas and realised it just didn’t taste right. When I put
the Speyside spring water in to complement the Glenfarclas, it utterly transformed
the texture and the mouth-feel, and from that moment I was utterly converted.”
Also in May the world famous Speyside and Islay festivals took place. They will be
held again in 2015.

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has today revealed that The Famous
Grouse will become its’ official whisky. The announcement coincides with Homecoming’s Whisky Month, which sees events taking place across Scotland to celebrate the national drink. Created in 1896 in Perthshire, The Famous Grouse has
been Scotland’s no. 1 selling whisky for more than 30 years and sold in around 100
markets worldwide. The agreement will see parent firm and international premium
spirits company Edrington, which is headquartered in Glasgow, join the Glasgow
2014 sponsor family. David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 chief executive, said: “As a
company with a strong and long established presence in Scotland, we are pleased
to have The Famous Grouse on board as our Official Whisky. We will be working
with Edrington from now until Games time on collaborative opportunities to
showcase this special product while encouraging those celebrating the Games to do

A near mythical bottle of Johnnie Walker, Jim Beveridge was asked to create
one of the rarest and exclusive whiskies to mark the 200th anniversary of John
Walker’s birthday. This exceedingly rare Johnnie Walker was never intended for
public sale as all of the bottles were gifted to people who (in the companies opinion) ‘made a significant contribution to modern life’, the company has never divulged this list. This very limited whisky was produced from only 9 casks all aged
between 45 and 70 years old and limited to only 200 bottles. The presentation of
this bottle is exceptional, the bottle is nestled inside a lockable victorian style writing case alongside a replica antique nib pen and a recreation of John Walker’s son
Alexander Walker II’s handwritten book of blending recipes. The writing along the
etched onto the bottle reads from the oldest remaining document in their archives:
“The inventory of the estate and effects of John Walker, November 1819” Please

The Scottish National Party (SNP) hit out at the UK Government for allegedly
charging Scottish organisations to promote Scotch whisky in UK embassies. SNP
Westminster leader Angus Robertson has criticised the UK Government for allegedly charging organisations to promote Scotch whisky is UK embassies. On
17 May, World Whisky Day, the SNP, Scotland’s ruling party which campaigns for
Scottish independence from the UK, issued a statement criticising the charges. The
party said despite the fact Scottish taxpayers contribute towards Foreign Office
hospitality, companies are charged for promoting Scotch whisky in UK embassies, while other UK trade and investment groups are allowed to use the facilities

for free. “Scottish taxpayers are being double-charged by the Foreign Office to promote one of the UK’s biggest exports,” said SNP Westminster leader and Moray
MP Angus Robertson. “Scotland’s whisky industry has been going from strength
to strength - but with little thanks to the UK Government.” The party claimed
investment and trade promotion group Scottish Development International paid
£3000 for each reception it held in UK embassies to promote Scotch whisky. This
revelation follows UK foreign secretary William Hague’s claim that organisations
would be charged for promoting Scotch whisky if Scotland votes in favour of becoming independent during a referendum to take place later this year. However,
the SNP claimed that this is already the case. “Scottish Development International
has done fantastic work to promote Scottish trade and investment worldwide, but
the charges they have faced by UK embassies is an example of how Scotland is losing out because of decisions made at Westminster,” added Robertson. Paul’s note;

The Lakes Distillery, the first distillery to be built in the Lake District in more
than 100 years, initially launched The One in the UK last autumn, and is the brainchild of former Isle of Arran Distillers co-founder, Paul Currie, and former Dewars
master distiller, Chris Anderson. Talks are already taking place to cement distribution deals in Spain and Poland, as well as other part of Europe and Asia. “To create

Japan’s Suntory Holdings has completed a $16bn (£9.5bn) buyout of the US firm
that makes Jim Beam whiskey. The deal also sees the renaming of the company, to
be called Beam Suntory. The corporate marriage creates the world’s third-largest
high-end spirits maker. The combined total sales of Beam and Suntory’s spirits
business amounted to $4.6bn last year. Suntory is best-known for the Japanese
whisky brands Yamazaki and Hibiki, as well as Bowmore Scotch whisky and Midori liqueur. In addition to the widely recognised Jim Beam bourbon, Beam’s other

MANILA, Philippines - Emperador Inc., the liquor unit of Alliance Global Group
Inc. (AGI), confirmed it is in talks to acquire the spirits business of whisky maker
Whyte and Mackay. “We confirm that Emperador Inc. is in ongoing discussions
with United Spirits (Great Britain) Ltd. regarding Emperador’s interest in purchasing the Whyte and Mackay spirits business in the United Kingdom,” the company
told the Philippine stock exchange. Bloomberg last week reported that the Diageo Plc’s United Spirits Ltd. (UNSP) is in talks with Emperador for the sale of the
Whyte & Mackay spirits business. Bloomberg said the transaction “may value the
whisky maker at about 400 million pounds ($675 million).” Last March, Emperador Distillers Inc. has signed a “cooperation agreement” with Diageo.

& Mackay scotch whisky unit to Emperador Inc. of the Philippines in a $729-million (4.3 billion pounds) deal that satisfies UK antitrust concerns and the Filipino
company’s thirst for growth. Excluding the Whyte & Mackay brand and its bulk
whisky, the remaining malt whiskies Dalmore, Jura, Tamnavulin and Fetercairn
fetched a multiple that was “stratospheric,” said a person familiar with the matter,
adding that Emperador beat two other bidders in the last round. Diageo originally
wanted to keep Dalmore and Tamnavulin, but sources told Reuters last year that
including the high-end Dalmore would lead to a more lucrative sale.

The Famous Grouse launches Asia limited edition The Famous Grouse 16 Year
Old Vic Lee edition will be the first in a series of collectable blends produced annually for the region. Bottled at 40% abv, the Vic Lee expression has been matured in
first-fill Sherry casks and first-fill American Bourbon casks “to ensure a depth of
flavour. As a result, its bright burnished gold hue belies a robust flavour – a beautiful blend of spicy nutmeg and cinnamon bark notes with a hint of smooth and
silky vanilla,” explained master blender Gordon Motion. The edition is presented
in a pink and purple, signed collectors’ pack designed by Lee, an award-winning illustrator. Ryan Hill, regional director, Asia travel retail, at brand-owner Edrington,

In what will come as no surprise to whiskey enthusiasts, Buffalo Trace issued a
statement recently declaring that bourbon shortages show no signs of abating for
the foreseeable future. The spirit’s unprecedented popularity has created a growing
demand that the current supply is utterly incapable of matching. For the time being, Buffalo Trace — a 228-year-old distillery in Frankfort, K.Y. — will continue to
supply all markets monthly allocations of Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare and Blanton’s
each moth, as well as continue the annual release of its super-premium whiskeys,
including Pappy Van Winkle, every fall. Though the impact of the shortage may

not immediately be felt by the average consumer, trouble is on the horizon. Specific conditions much be met in order for a whiskey to be classified as bourbon,
most notably that the spirit must be aged in new, charred oak barrels. According
to The Spirits Business, the industry has been experiencing a shortfall in necessary
lumber for the last six months. Add to that a growing interest amongst drinkers
— both in the U.S. and around the world — in aged bourbon, and a shortage is the
only logical outcome. While there is little danger of bourbon disappearing from
store shelves entirely, a shortage could either inspire distillers to age their bourbon
for a shorter period of time (thereby losing less of the product to evaporation)
or, more likely, raise prices on the bourbon they already produce. Either scenario
would prove costly for distillers and consumers alike. Paul;what will this mean to
the Scotch industry? fewer casks?
William Grant & Sons, which produces Glenfiddich, says the New Zealand Whisky Company’s Dunedin DoubleWood is breaching its Balvenie DoubleWood trademark. New Zealand Whisky Company co-owner and chief executive Greg Ramsay
said there was “absolutely no risk for confusion” over the “DoubleWood” mark.
The Dunedin DoubleWood bottle had a map of New Zealand on it and was “prominently” labelled as being part of the New Zealand Whisky Collection, Ramsay said.
“It could not possibly be confused with Balvenie, which has a white box, white
label and to my knowledge doesn’t refer to New Zealand at all. What I find particularly galling is that ... [William Grant & Sons] only registered their trademark after
our Dunedin DoubleWood won a silver medal at the San Francisco spirits awards.”

WHISKEY PIGS The Templeton Rye Pork Project was dreamt up by the founders of Templeton Rye Distillery in Iowa, who wanted to see if they could create
pork that tastes like their whiskey, without the need for marinating it in alcohol.
Twenty-five pigs born in January 2014 are being raised on the farm, looked after
by a friend of the Templeton team, Nick Berry, who has a PhD in animal science

focused on meat eating and quality and works in the commercial pig industry for
an animal health company. All the pigs are purebred Duroc, which according to
Berry are known for their meat quality and a natural fit for the project. However,
the pigs will not be exposed to any whisky, but will be eating a distinct diet that
includes the dry distillery grain from the whisky-making process within the feed.
Paul; what do you think about this?

David Frost, chief executive, of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) fears a
separate Scotland may not be granted European Union membership. He believes
such a scenario “would be damaging and difficult to manage” and is concerned
about the stability of the Scottish economy if the UK breaks up. His comments
emerged in the association’s annual review, which also raised issue with a separate tax and regulation systems as well as potential currency problems. Paul; does

Kentucky’s historic Old Taylor Distillery, which has been mothballed for more
than 40 years, is to be restored. Local company Peristyle LLC will invest US$6.1
million in renovating the 125-year-old building, based in Woodford County. Peristyle, a company recently formed by two Kentucky businessmen, bought the distillery for US$950,000, according to the Lexington Herald. The company will spend
the next 18 months restoring the 83-acre complex with the hope it will become
fully operational, distilling Bourbon and other spirits, by 2015. Old Taylor was the
first distillery to reach one million US Government certified cases of straight Bourbon and is said to have one of the world’s largest stills as well as one of the longest
Bourbon warehouses. Last month, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance
Authority gave preliminary approval for as much as $250,000 in tax incentives for
the project. Bourbon distilling contributes nearly £2 billion in gross state product
each year, while Kentucky in particular exported $383 million of distilled spirits in
2013, 21% of the US total.
WHISKY magnates the Grant-Gordon family have topped a list of Scotland’s richest people with a fortune of £1.9 billion. According to the annual Sunday Times
Rich List, the family, which owns Banffshire-based William Grant & Sons, producers of Glenfiddich, beat Emirati businessman Mahdi al-Tajir into second place.
The amount of “whisky” produced in India and imported to the EU is “extremely
worrying,” the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has claimed, as it does not comply with official definitions. EU imports of Indian “whisky” that does not adhere
to official requirements is “extremely worrying” In its Annual Report for 2013, the
industry body said that there is no compulsory definition of whisky in India, and
the Indian voluntary standard does not require whisky to be distilled form cereals
or matured for any length of time. According to European law, spirits labeled as
whisky must be distilled from cereals below 94.8% abv and matured for at least
three years

COMING SOON - DETAILS ON CASK SALES AND OWN LABEL BOTTLES
The UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) has announced a £5 million of funding for
a pipeline of energy efficiency projects at a number of Scottish distilleries. The Aberfeldy distillery in Perthshire will be taking advantage of the new funding available. This follows GIB’s announcement last year of an investment at the Tomatin
distillery, near Inverness. Tomatin is on track to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by around 80%. The projects will finance the installation of biomass boilers,

to replace the existing, inefficient, heavy fuel oil boilers. This will reduce the distilleries’ energy costs and their greenhouse gas emissions, without requiring any
up-front capital investment. The boilers will be used to produce steam, necessary
for several parts of the whisky production process. The Aberfeldy project will use
the same core biomass boiler technology and systems as at Tomatin. Engineering
and installation works will commence immediately. Bacardi, who own the distillery, have estimated that the project could reduce the distillery’s carbon footprint
by up to 90%, by replacing 100% of the heat currently generated from fuel oil.
Aberfeldy Distillery was founded by John Dewar & Sons, Ltd. in 1896 and opened
in 1898. The distillery is located on the outskirts of Aberfeldy, on the southern
bank of the Upper Tay. Aberfeldy is the largest malt whisky component of Dewar’s
Blended Scotch Whisky. It relies on the fresh water stream Pitilie Burn, which runs
alongside the distillery and is the only distillery in Scotland to use these waters.
The new biomass boilers will be fuelled by sustainably sourced wood pellet fuel.
The pellets are manufactured by Balcas using renewable energy and raw materials sourced from local, sustainably managed forests at their plant at Invergordon.

Sinds 18 oktober 2012 heeft whiskyminnend Nederland er weer een prachtige
whiskybar bij. Eigenaar is gastheer en whiskyconnaisseur Wim Wamelink, bekend
van onder andere zijn eerste bar de Heerenkamer die hij met zijn hotel eind 2010
verkocht heeft. Voor zijn grote whiskycollectie die hij nog steeds in bezit had zocht
hij een nieuwe plek en die is nu gevonden. De nieuwe bar heet de MasterClass Bar
en is gelegen in het plaatsje ’t Loo Oldebroek, 10 km ten zuidwesten van Zwolle. De
bar is in het pand van horeca interieurbouwer Inris die het als showroom gebruikte. Een prachtige bar in oud Engelse stijl met een buffetbar, fraaie lambrisering,
luxe fauteuils en zitjes voor maximaal 45 gasten. Het decor is de indrukwekkende
whiskycollectie van meer dan 300 verschillende whiskyflessen. Dit is de passie van
Wim Wamelink die als whiskyconnaisseur dagelijks proeverijen biedt, vaak op locatie, maar nu vooral in zijn eigen whiskybar. De bar is besloten dus bezoeken
kan alleen na reservering. Maar men is alle dagen van de week al welkom vanaf 2
gasten als Very Important Proevers. Als gastheer pur sang zoekt Wamelink altijd
gul de whisky’s uit die passen bij de wensen van de gast en de sfeer van de middag/
avond.
Deze bar is tevens een perfecte plek voor besloten bijeenkomsten als jubilea, recepties, presentaties en bijeenkomsten zowel informeel als zakelijk. Er zijn tal van
mogelijkheden voor diners, activiteiten en overnachtingen in de omgeving waar
mee wordt samengewerkt om een bezoek compleet te maken.
Goed bereikbaar vanaf de A-28 en A 50 en met de trein NS station Wezep waarbij
voor transfer kan worden gezorgd.
