Traces of a rich Hansa past w Hansa facts Avercamp’s winter landscapes IJssel cog ship Hendrick Avercamp ( January 27, 1585 (bapt.) - May 15, 1634 (buried)) is a 16th century painter from Kampen. Famous even abroad for his paintings of winter landscapes that often depict skaters. Avercamp was mute. He was given the nickname of “de Stomme van Kampen” (the mute of Kampen). You can find his paintings in, for example, the Stedelijk Museum Kampen. A unique discovery was made in the IJssel at Kampen in 2011. A medieval IJssel cog ship was found. “Ui” (ridiculing) stories from Kampen An Ui from Kampen is a folkloric reference to a story about the stupidity of the population of Kampen that always contains wise advice. Several “Uien” (ridiculing stories) are known in Kampen. Every year a cow can be found in the Nieuwe Toren because of the “High Pasture” story. (Editor: the tower lost its top after being struck by lightning and grass grew there. The people of Kampen came up with the brilliant idea of having a cow eat the grass, but the poor animal died of fright because it was hoisted up the tower.) De IJssel cog ship was sunk on purpose to control the IJssel and, thus, send the turbulent and silting-up IJssel in the required direction. Currently, investigations are taking place to salvage and preserve the cog ship. The Hansa past of the cultural historic town of Kampen can still be seen everywhere in the town. More than 500 monumental buildings, special façades and 3 of the original town gates remain from its history from the golden era of the town. Golden Age of Kampen The hey-day of the Hanseatic League was between the 12th and 16th centuries. At its peak, this league counted 208 market towns. Thanks to the trade and industry, Kampen developed from a simple settlement to a prosperous trading town because of it favourable position on the trading route on which many a ship sailed. Kampen grew to become one of the most powerful and leading towns of North West Europe. You can get a taste of its history by walking this Hansa route. Finished walking?
