Do consumers want tech on their sleeves?
As more consumers carry mobile devices wherever they go, high-tech brand manufacturers recently put wearable
technology front and center during CES in Las Vegas and at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, AC Nielsen
reported. Read more.
Drugs spotted in ‘intelligent’ sportswear
Sportswear that can detect banned drugs in an athlete's sweat or provide early warning of a potential injury is to be
created by an agency of the Scottish government. This summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be used by
Scottish Enterprise as a launch pad for the design of hi-tech garments capable of streaming live data on an athletes's
physical and mental condition, the Sunday times writes. Read more.
Body temperature lowered by apparel
Adidas has launched a new cooling apparel technology called Climachill which incorporates an innovative knitted fabric
with titanium and industry first 3D aluminium cooling sheres. Read more.
Fully textile waveguide antenna
Researchers at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Universiti Malaysia Perlis are the first to have developed a fully
textile waveguide antenna using a metamaterial inspired unit cell that is also used in composite right/left-handed
transmission lines, the website of Phys.org reports. Read here more about it
Fashion
Dress uses technology whenever your heartrate is elevated
Wearable technology is a scifi idea that's just starting to become a reality, so it's to be expected that for a while its gaze
is going to exceed its grasp, and in the world of fashion one must make allowances that one typically doesn't for
technology for pieces that blur the line between art and a functional object. Read more.
Can your short become too smart by new tech?
Clambering into a pair of Lycra cycling shorts in the gents may not sound very technological, but these are no ordinary
shorts. The fabric contains embedded sensors which relay signals about your muscle movement, the Cape Times
reported. The man who lent me the shorts, Janne Pylvas, the director of Mbody, boasted: "These are for elite athletes...
our customers include people like Red Bull and McLaren. We can measure your muscles and show you exactly what
you are using and where."
Take the Glowfaster "smart running jacket". It's a running jacket synced up to your phone and a heart-rate sensor,
which flashes when you hit whatever speed you have set yourself. If you go off the pace, the light stays on.
"It's like Tron, it's awesome, isn't it?" said Glowfaster's Janine Hogan. The jackets actually don't look bad, and the light
element is a discreet bit of piping along the sleeves and up the middle”. Former Royal Marine-turned-fitness-instructor
Simon Weatherall, who came up with the idea, said: "It's got to be wearable. You don't want to look like a berk in it."
Aside from "intelligent clothing", there were stands with tech accessories ranging from wristbands which tell you
whether you've had too much sun to cameras you wear which randomly take pictures.

Will wearable technology become everyday?
Wearable technology such as smart watches and fitness trackers will soon become an integral part of every product,
Highbeam reports on their website. Katherine Hague, co-founder of technology e-commerce platform ShopLocket, said
that soon customers will find digital abilities in almost every product they buy. Read more.
Wearable tech that uploads
Dutch designer Pauline van Dongen isn't your ordinary fashionista. Her company, Wearable Solar, specializes in hightech clothing.
Exhibiting with other Netherlands start-ups at South By Southwest in Austin recently, van Dongen revealed prototypes
of a black "solar" dress and a solar coat that collect and store enough energy to charge a smartphone. Read more or
see the video.
Fibre
European footprint fibre
Lenzing, a leading producer of man-made cellulose fibres, is presenting a new fibre concept Eurocel for the nonwovens
industry at the Index trade fair that will be taking place from 8-11 April 2014 in Geneva, according to Innovation in
textiles. Read more.
Conductive fibres – a thread?
From lighter aircraft to electric knickers, flexible filaments raise a wide range of interesting possibilities. Read more.

Sun smart clothing more popular
Auastralian designer Susan Craig has seen some interesting trends in sun protective clothing since she began her
company Solarsuit. "It's an interesting mindset in the evolution of clothes... people now consider sun-protective clothing
much like clothing worn in winter for protection from the cold and rain," she said. "Winter clothing tends to consist of
quite a few items and is considered fashionable rather than functional...
"Sun protective clothing has now reached that status also, it's now as much about fashion as it is about function." She
said while sun protective clothing has come a long way in the last 20 years since the invention of the "neck to knees" in
the 90s, just like other fashion sectors, the market is demanding more and more for their summer protection wardrobe.

Borduurwerk, een lichtend voorbeeld ?!?
Een aparte opdracht, zoals van het Holst Center, gevestigd bij de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Daar is project
dat OLED lichtbronnen in textiel verwerkt. Er was het verzoek het logo groot uit te borduren, waarna er OLED's in
gingen. Van dat project is een YouTube filmpje gemaakt. Klik hier om het filmpje te zien
Europe is center of innovations in printed sensors
As the next Printed Electronics Europe event is now less than 2 weeks away, it is opportune to take a closer look at the
