Empyro breaks ground on biomass pyrolysis oil production plant in The Netherlands.
Hengelo, The Netherlands, May 21st 2014.
On Wednesday May 21st Mr. Theo Rietkerk (Representative Economy, Energy and Innovation of the
Province of Overijssel) has performed the ceremony that marks the start of construction of the Empyro
factory in Hengelo, The Netherlands. To celebrate this event BTG-BTL had organized a tour of some of this
projects local technology suppliers, among which are Broeze steelworks in Nijverdal, Stork Thermeq in
Hengelo and Zeton in Enschede. At the construction site a billboard was unveiled and a foundation pillar
donated by the Province of Overijssel was placed by Mr. Theo Rietkerk.
The Empyro pyrolysis oil production plant is constructed at the AkzoNobel site in Hengelo (The
Netherlands). By the end of this year construction will have been completed. The production capacity will
then be gradually increased to its maximum of over 20 million litres of pyrolysis oil per year. This amount
of renewable oil will replace 12 million cubic meters of natural gas, the equivalent annual consumption of
8,000 Dutch households, which saves up to 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. Additionally, the
project creates approximately 100 person-years of work in Overijssel.

De eerste paal pyrolysefabriek (olie-uit-hout) Hengelo is geslagen
Hengelo, 21 mei 2014
De eerste paal voor de bouw van de pyrolysefabriek Empyro in Hengelo is woensdag 21 mei symbolisch
geslagen door Theo Rietkerk, gedeputeerde van de provincie Overijssel. Om de start van de bouw te vieren
heeft BTG Bioliquids een bustour georganiseerd voor een gezelschap van betrokkenen langs een aantal van
de regionale toeleveranciers van deze fabriek: Broeze Nijverdal BV, Stork Thermeq in Hengelo en Zeton BV
in Enschede. Op de bouwlocatie werd het informatiebord onthuld door gedeputeerde Theo Rietkerk en
directeur Gerhard Muggen van BTG Bioliquids BV. De eerste paal werd symbolisch geslagen door Theo
Rietkerk.
De pyrolyse fabriek wordt gebouwd op het terrein van AkzoNobel in Hengelo en zal vanaf eind 2014
geleidelijk in gebruik genomen worden. De volle productiecapaciteit bedraagt ruim 20 miljoen liter
pyrolyse olie per jaar. Deze hoeveelheid duurzame olie vervangt ruim 12 miljoen kubieke meter aardgas.
Dit komt overeen met het jaarlijkse aardgasverbruik van 8.000 huishoudens en een jaarlijkse CO2
besparing van ruim 20.000 ton. Bijkomend effect is dat voor ongeveer 100 mensjaren werk wordt
gecreëerd in Overijssel.
