Vogelen in tropisch Midden-Amerika
betekent
o.a.,
trogons,
toekans,
tanagers, kolibries, en watervogels
waaronder ook de Noord-Amerikaanse
vogels op trek. Maar ook kikkertjes in
alle kleuren, leguanen, leuke apen en
schildpadden kunnen met zekerheid
worden waargenomen. De bomen zitten
bovendien vol met epifyten als
Bromelia’s en orchideeën. Kortom,
vertoeven in het paradijs.
Fregatvogel.
Na de zeer geslaagde reis naar Costa Rica in 2013 met als gids de Costaricaan Maguil
Cespedes maken wij nu met hem een reis naar het zuiden van Costa Rica en vervolgens naar
het aangrenzende Panama. Dit land was vele jaren niet zo goed te bereizen, maar heeft zich nu
ontwikkeld tot een meer geciviliseerd land. Het is echter agrarisch minder gecultiveerd dan
Costa Rica, dus er is nog veel natuur en het is intussen voor vogelaars een topbestemming.
Het landschap in dit smalle deel van Midden-Amerika is schitterend met een hoge vulkanisch
bergrug die het doorsnijdt en aan weerszijden oceanen. Dit levert verschillende lokale
klimaten op en de tropische natuur is overweldigend. In dit gebied wordt dan ook het grootste
aantal vogelsoorten van de Nieuwe Wereld aangetroffen.

We vliegen naar San José, de hoofdstad van
Costa Rica, en rijden onderweg vogelend
naar het zuiden waar we in Drake Bay twee
nachten in tent-accommodaties aan de
Pacific
kust
van
het
tropisch
regenwoudreservaat Corcovado verblijven.
Dit gebied is alleen per boot bereikbaar.
Daarna steken we over naar Golfito met
zijn mangrovebossen, om vervolgens de
Panamese grens te passeren richting de
hooglanden van Boquete waar we o.a. de
beroemde quetzal kunnen waarnemen, en
vele andere hooglandvogels.
Kapucijnaapje
Via Santa Fe de Veraguas, waar we de vogels van het middengebergte ontmoeten, en de
Anton Valley in het laagland, gaan we naar de Pipeline Plantation. Dat klinkt vreemd, maar
door het aanleggen van een pijpleiding dwars door Panama is hier een landschap en vegetatie
ontstaan met een zeer groot aantal vogels. Het is vergelijkbaar met de oorsprong van
bloemrijke weiden of rietmoerassen bij ons. Als laatste stop bezoeken we de omgeving van
het Panamakanaal waar een bezoekerscentrum is en op het gebied van vogels en planten veel
te beleven is. In de gebieden waar we overnachten maken we wandel- en enkele boottochten.
Vanuit Panama city vliegen we na afloop rechtstreeks terug naar Nederland.
In verband met de soms lange dagen en de tropische omstandigheden is deze reis alleen
geschikt voor mensen met een behoorlijke algemene conditie.
Een voorlopig van dag tot dag programma staat hieronder.
Omdat deze reis al in februari wordt uitgevoerd en we zeker willen zijn van voldoende
vliegtuigstoelen sluit de inschrijving in dit geval op 15 november!
Costa Rica- Panama Birdwatching and exploring trip.
Voorlopig dagprogramma.
Day 1
Welcome Arrival and transfer (Airport-Hotel). The hotel well locate to asure a easy departure
next day out of San Jose, it will be locate in the near by area 10 minutes from the airport on
the hard of Alajuela Town. Dinner included on a near restaurant.
Day 2
Depart from Alajuela towards Sierpe de Osa by bus. We will do some birding stops on a bus
trip that will consume most of the day. Some of the stops will be in Tarcoles area where
water birds will be the principal attraction. Others stops will be around the shrimp pool.
Overnight at Oleaje sereno Cabinas, Sierpe.

Day 3

Morning bird watching tour by boat at the mangrove before breakfast. Departure by boat
around 10 am towards Caletas beach in the Drake bay area ( the trip will allow us to be
there on 45 minutes. Lunch at the tend camp and birdwatching in the late afternoon in the
surrounding area. Pack no more than 12.5 kilograms on a smaller suitcase. The rest of the
items will be collect and place on a safe room till we return.

Day 4
Full day exploring the near by trails along the coast and some other trails up the forest.
After lunch in the late afternoon you will be able to refresh at the beach. Please as your guide
for the right place for this activity. Overnight at the Tend camp.

Day 5
After Breakfast we will depart from Drake Bay by boat towards Sierpe town after pick the
rest of our luggage we will continue to our next destination Golfito town. There will be a
stop for lunch and a bird wacting opportunity before we arrive to the Hotel on a nice spot
close to Golfito Forest reserve. Overnight at Golfito.

Day 6
Today we will visit Casa Orquideas by boat and enjoy a box lunch. The place is locate in the
heart of Golfo Dulce and we will do a private boat trip. It is surround by Piedras Blancas
National Park it is a wonderful botanical garden visited often by dozens of colorful birds.
Ideal for first class photography. There we will consume pretty much 2/3 of the day.

Day 7
After check out our exploration will take us to the border of Costa Rica-Panama where after
clearing costumes we will change vehicles. There will be at list another our before we reach
the area of boquete where we will get a late lunch. In the early afternoon we will explore the
surroundings and bird watch in the proximities of the Hotel Dos Rios locate in cerro punta.
Overnight at Cerro Punta.

Day 8
In the morning we will visit Volcan Baru National Park and explore later after lunch the
surrounding of Boquete. Volcan Baru is the highest elevation in Panama and the only
volcano of the country with more than 3474 meters. Since we are going up a jacket is highly
recommended since temperature can drop especially in the surroundings of the cloud forest of
the area.

Day 9
After the introduction of the Higlands of Panama we will continue our journey towards the
beautiful area of Santa Fe de Veraguas and visit our next National Park. With more than 300
birds species is very likely that we found some new tanagers and warblers on this region. Of
course the landscape of the region will allow us to stop along the way if something interesting
shows while we are in transit towards Santa Fe.

Day 10
After enjoying a breakfast we will begging our outings. We provably will need some long
sleeves shirt since the elevation and the wind that domain this area cause fresh temperatures
even in sunny days. This is especially true when the trade winds blow at this time of the

year. Visiting Santa Fe National Park in the morning fallow by a late lunch and some more
exploration in the area. Dinner will be at the Hotel.

Day 11
After breakfast departing towards Anton Valley but before it we will visit the are of Chitre to
look for some dry forest specialties like plain-breasted ground-dove, mouse-collared
tyrannulet , crested bobwhite as well as some raptors including the snail kites. Later we will
have a lunch in the are and will continue our trip towards Anton Valley where again we will
dedicate the later afternoon to familiarize our self with the ornithological life of this area
locate 600 meters above the sea level.
Day 12
Since this will be the last time in the elevations today we will try to get as much as we can of
this pictures valley. Tanagers, warblers,robins and other middle elevation birds will be the
main type of birds to look for.

Day 13
Today after leaving behind the highlands of Panama and Aton Valley we will finally get into
Panama city where will visit the metro Park and walk looking for several species of birds
including the endemic Yellow-green tyrannulet and the rosy-thrush tanager. Since you can
leave without seen the Canal we will spend some time at the visitor center where everyone
can see the operation of the canal and the transit of the vessels in Miraflores locks. Overnight
at Panama city.

Day 14
After breakfast we will visite the canal area again but these time to get more deep into one on
the most well recognize bird watching areas of Panama. The name of the area is Pipe Line on
be halve of the pipe build during the second world war to maintain the oil flow in case the
canal suffer any german’s attack. Overnight at Panama city, Hotel Roma.

Day 15
Transfer from the hotel to the airport of Tocumen and farewell.
