• For those who don’t know …
KNRM (aka) Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institute (that reveals her mission)
• The general question: ‘How can we search better and rescue more people?’
– What kind of material, vessels, equipment?
– What education and competences?
– How can you make volunteers perform as high maritime professionals?
• Spin off by building the lifeboat of the future … called ‘Nh1816’
(as we always say: the difference between Search and Rescue and ReSearch is in the cue; not how but when!)

KNRM SAR Innovation program
• Although still a vessel, this one is different
– Involvement of top of the best scientist, designers and builders
– Result is a new hull, based on AXE-bow principle
– Better performance (manoeuverability and course – vertical fins)
– Designed and build on proven principles of safety (self-righting & speed)
– Adding of a new principle of safety “Information”
– More comfort and silence for the crew
– Result is a vessel
• radical hull aluminum build, wheelhouse GRP (flexible)
• with an electronics and cable density of a average satellite (IT)

Redundancy of information …
• Design principle of the vessel: Redundancy
• Two is always better then one!
• Adopt this idea also for information!?
• Yes, because experiences has learned us that information is not always
available or reliable!

Availability of information …
• Design principle of the vessel: (High-)Availability
• On the shore is everything, on the sea nothing, no commercial interest for
building an information infrastructure (classical satellite approach)
• And even when you can receive it how do you present it? Small vessel
market is years behind on what is possible now a days
• And even when you can receive and present it? How is it being interpreted by
the crew (volunteers and maritime professional information)

The KNRM Nh1816 Challenge …
• How can you exchange data between a small vessel and the shore and other
vessels (don’t do it … don’t say it … )
• How can data available on the shore helping the crew during a mission?
– Search and Rescue search patterns
– Information of persons, objects, vessels, etc.
– Information of floating objects, ice, danger
– Information wheater and sea conditions like meteo and wave heights
• How can other data, f.i. available by satellites, help us?
– The lack of the Global Position System and the search for additionals

• Primary information needed to sail the vessel is available on board
– Infrastructure is fully redundant, most information categories too
– All navigation equipment is connected to at least two different sources
• GPS - ? eLoran
• Two idependant radar installations
• Several VHF and radio installations
• No MF but Iridium and Fleetbroadband 250 as future vision
• Least cost routing principles based on Wifi and 4G solutions

• Okay but where does it becomes spooky and spacy for a SAR organisation?
• The danger and worst fear: running with 30 knots into a half floating container
– Obstacle Avoidance Sonar – but does not fit …
• During thunderstorms often loosing GPS signal
– A second GPS is not the solution, sadly Galileo still not operating …
• No existing commercial arial equipment is suitable for the lifeboat
environment. We can not effort Navy like SATCOM solutions

The dreams …
• of an Infrastructure@Sea
• the exchange of data with the SAR vessel and the advantages
• of realtime audio and video between the vessel and the shore
• that someday even satellite information can be available
• that we are collecting information at the vessel which is from an value to
shore parties
• that we are unleashing the computing power on the shore for helping SAR
