Webroot Cuts Downtime and
IT Workload for Non-Profit
Digit All Systems
BACKGROUND
Digit All Systems, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to bridging the digital divide
and bringing the benefits of expanding technology to everyone. Established in 1998, the company
equips students in underserved communities with the skills they need to maximize in-demand
IT career opportunities. Its programs create real value for its students by combining high-quality
education with authentic hands-on training from experienced IT engineers.
AT A GLANCE
THE CHALLENGE

Digit All Systems (DAS) operates more than 20 classes, labs, and testing centers in various stateof-the-art facilities at its Baltimore administrative and partner locations. It designs each of its
certification programs to empower students with the knowledge and abilities that today’s employers
demand. Taught by IT instructors with real-world IT experience, all of the courses prepare students for
third-party validated professional certification exams.

Needless to say, these activities place heavy demands on the organization’s infrastructure, which can
be vulnerable to various cyber-attacks. According to Joseph Sutton, Executive Director at DAS, “we
administer over 500 exams monthly and maintain 25 different VPN connections to various partners to
teach our classes. With so many people accessing the computers, we were constantly plagued with
viruses, malware, and other security breaches on the computers.’’
As a result, Sutton and his IT team soon began investigating alternative antivirus solutions. “We were
looking for an antivirus product that would be both reliable and cost-effective, since we are a nonprofit organization. We needed a solution that would mitigate the downtime when systems needed to
be reimaged.”

CASE STUDY DIGIT ALL SYSTEMS
As Lance Lucas, CEO, puts it, “we have time limitations that require our
on-site personnel to quickly identify, diagnose, and repair workstations used
by our customers and support staff.” For organizations like Digit All Systems,
minimizing costly downtime for IT Support tasks is critical.
systems that use traditional security. Using rollback remediation capability,
SecureAnywhere™ Business Endpoint Protection journals and undoes
actions taken by a malicious piece of software, returning the machine to its
uninfected state.
THE SOLUTION
RESULTS
Sutton’s research soon led him to select Webroot SecureAnywhere®
Business Endpoint Protection as the optimum endpoint protection solution
for DAS. What influenced their decision? “It was a combination of things:
Webroot’s effectiveness, its real-time solutions and their stellar customer
service.”
“Webroot has been effective in preventing viruses and other malicious
software issues,” Mason concludes. “The downtime on our stations is
almost nonexistent. Being able to monitor all endpoints from a central
location also saves time. We are so impressed with Webroot we recommend
it to our IT Support customers.”
After deploying Webroot, the DAS IT staff observed a remarkable reduction
in support calls due to infected systems.
The metrics reported by the Digit All System’s team underscore the
measurable gains delivered by SecureAnywhere™ Business Endpoint
Protection:
“Thanks to Webroot, our computer maintenance time has
been cut in half because we no longer have to deal with
viruses.”
Mickey Mason, Certification Center Administrator, Digit All Systems
• Average scan time per device dropped from 30 minutes to 5-10 minutes
• Saved 11-14 hours per week in managing security-related issues
• Infections dropped by over 95 percent
The initial install package for Webroot is extremely small, around 750
KB, because the client doesn’t use a local signature database. Instead of
hogging system resources with signatures and bulky updates, Webroot
SecureAnywhere® solutions leverage comprehensive global threat data via
the cloud-based proprietary Webroot® Intelligence Network.
As tight budgets force both non- and for-profit organizations to grapple with
limited IT resources, the need for affordable endpoint security that offers
efficient protection against all types of threats is more pressing than ever.
Reflecting the remarkable results that Digit All Systems has experienced
with Webroot, Lucas’ endorsement speaks volumes:
The advantages of the Webroot approach are compelling:
“Webroot is a critical tool for our Baltimore, DC, New
Orleans, New York, Atlanta, and Jackson locations.
We plan to use Webroot SecureAnywhere® Business
Endpoint Protection, in our new Digit All System’s test
centers located in Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los
Angeles and Oakland, opening in 2015.”
• Better protection – due to a superior threat intelligence architecture
• Quicker installation – completed in a matter of seconds
• Faster scanning – the first scan takes only minutes, compared with
the hours other antivirus solutions require, and subsequent full system
scans typically take under two minutes
Lance Lucas, CEO, Digit All Systems
In the unlikely event that an infection does occur on a Webroot-protected
machine, the process to remove the infection is easier and faster than on
