Lou’s departure means that the Neerlandia Committee now has two vacancies. Shop report - A cheesy story Recently we noticed that some pieces of cheese showed mold. This is caused by opening the fridge door too frequently and/or opening the door for too long. It would greatly help if you made your choice of fridge products quickly; it saves energy and it is better for the quality of the products. Meanwhile, the mold has been removed from the affected cheese and the pieces are now selling for $2 less than the original price. And, on the subject of cheese: we buy our Gouda and Leydse kaas from the European Food store. This shop imports all sorts of European food products from the countries of origin. We are therefore totally relying on shipments and customs. Most of the time there are no problems or delays, occasionally we may experience a bit of a hiccup. Recently the Gouda cheese has been unavailable but as soon as the cheese is back on the shelves in the European Food store, it will be available again in the Neerlandia Shop. 26 April 2-5pm we will celebrate Koningsdag in the clubhouse. Unfortunately the majority of the people who attended the first night were not able to come due to other commitments, holidays and celebration of the Irish Saint Patrick's day. However, new people came along and again we had a great night. There was not as much singing as the February celebrations, but I am convinced everyone still had a great time. It was wonderful to meet some new people, and great to see everyone mingle straight away and making new friends. The next Kroegenavond will be a King's Day celebration on Saturday 26 April. Put it in your agendas, find your orange gear and get ready for a good Dutch party - it promises to be a big weekend. Inge & Jack. The first Sunday after he gets his new teeth, he talks for only eight minutes. The second Sunday, he talks only for ten minutes. The following Sunday he talks for 2 hours and 48 minutes. Half the congregation was sound asleep by then when someone had the nerve to interrupt the pastor and got him down from the pulpit, the congregation asked him what was going on. The Pastor explains about his new teeth and that on the first Sunday his gums hurt so bad he couldn't talk for more than 8 minutes. The second Sunday his gums still hurt and he could only talk for 10 minutes. But this morning he put his wife's false teeth in by mistake and he just couldn't stop talking. (Sorry Girls, but this is a true story.) Unknown Airline - Brilliant desk staff. An award should go to an Airlines desk attendant in Sydney some months ago for being smart and funny while making her point, when she was confronted by a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo. A crowded flight was cancelled after a 767 was withdrawn from service. A single attendant was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travellers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said: "I HAVE to be on this flight and it HAS to be FIRST CLASS". The attendant replied: "I'm sorry, sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these people first and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out." The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear: "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?" Without hesitating, the attendant smiled and grabbed her public address microphone and said: "May I have your attention, please, may I have your attention, please," her voice being heard clearly throughout the terminal. "We have a passenger here at Desk 14 WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to Desk 14." With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the desk attendant, gritted his teeth and uttered a very rude personal expressive. Without flinching, she smiled and said: "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to get in line for that too." (For all Who Work With Rude Customers, isn't it a shame no one can actually do this without risking his or her job!) Page 10 The Dutch in WA No Driver's Licence? I was sitting on my lawn sunning and reading when I was startled by a fairly late model car crashing through my hedge and coming to rest on my lawn. I helped the elderly driver out and sat him on a lawn chair. "My goodness", I exclaimed: "you are quite old to be driving!" "Yes", he replied: "I am old enough that I don't need a license anymore. The last time I went to my doctor he examined me and asked if I had a driving licence. I told him yes and handed it to him. He took scissors out of a drawer, cut the licence into pieces and threw them in the wastebasket." "You won't be needing this anymore", he said. "So I thanked him most sincerely and left." HOSPITAL BILL A man suffered a serious heart attack while shopping in a store. The store clerk called 911 when they saw him collapse to the floor. The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open heart bypass surgery. He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic Hospital. A nun was seated next to his bed holding a clipboard loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment. "Do you have health insurance?" she asked. He replied in a raspy voice, "No health insurance." The nun asked, "Do you have money in the bank?" He replied, "No money in the bank." Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?" asked the irritated nun. He said: "I only have a spinster sister, and she is a nun." The nun became agitated and announced loudly: "Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God." The patient replied: "Perfect. Send the bill to my brother-in-law." It's history goes as far back as 10,000 years, when people already lived on the same site. In the middle ages Hengelo consisted of only a handful of farms and by 1802 this had grown to about 200 farms and houses. The village, although not large, was a self-supporting community. The population only showed substantial growth during the last 125 years. The people of Hengelo, besides farmers, were mainly employed by the textile, the metal and later on the chemical industries with all their associated activities. Hengelo in Overijssel must not be confused with a small village called Hengelo in province of Gelderland. Hengelo, Overijssel was never granted city rights as it was only a small village that only expanded in the 19th century after the industrial revolution. In the late19th century it developed very rapidly especially after the construction of railway lines through the town and Hengelo became an important railway junction. Hengelo also was the home town of Hengelo Bier, a local brewery. Tourism One of the most prominent buildings is the Lambertusbasiliek, a Roman basilica built in 1890 devoted to Saint Lambert. There is also an old water Mill in Oele called De Oldemeule, which dates back to 1690. During the Second World War the mill was still in use to process grain, but after the war the mill went into decline. Now the mill is owned by the municipality of Hengelo, which renovated the mill in 1979 and it is now open to the public on Sundays during the summer months. In the last couple of years new millers have been trained to operate the mill. Watermill De Oldemeule dates In the past there was also an oil mill, but this was back to 1690 demolished in 1900. Lambertusbasiliek History: Hengelo in the 16th en 17th century In he 16th century Hengelo was small village and this did not change in the next century. When the Spanjards conquered the area in the late 16th century, arson and robbery by the Spanish army was the order of the day. In 1595, not less than 43 houses were burnt to the ground, this was about 1/3rd of the whole town. Meanwhile the farmers were concentrating on growing flax, the stems of the flax were spun into yarn and the yarn woven into textiles. It was in the wintertime that the women spun the yarn and the men did the weaving in special rooms of their farms. The woven products were often bleached alongside the waterways. Hengelo in the 18th century During the 18th century the farmers were producing more cloth then they needed and that was sold to travelling merchants. Then the merchant managed to get the farmers to work together in small workshops and this was the start of Hengelo's Textile industrie. The industrial revolution In 1830 Willem de Clerq, director of the "Nederlandse Handel Maatschappij," was asked by the Dutch King Willem I to investigate the setting up of a proper textile industrie in Overijssel. He investigated the issue and decided on Hengelo due to the veaving skills already there and the low cost of wages that were paid. Modern textile factories were then built with steam driven machinery. Not long after that, Hengelo became an important railway junction, with connections to the west, south and norh and also east into Germany. Soon other light and heavy industry followed and by 1900 the town had grown to 10,000 inhabitants. The Koninklijke Nederlandse Zoutindustrie (Royal Dutch Salt Industry) extracted it between 1918 and 1963 and sold it under the name Jozo. They built wooden drilling derricks to cover the actual drill holes. To win the salt, water was first pumped into the ground. The salt dissolved in the water and was then pumped up again. Hengelo during the second world war. Before the second world war the centrum of Hengelo was just like many other villages with houses, shops and farmlike buildings along narrow, winding streets. However, from that scene there is nothing left. Towards the end of the war Hengelo was a main target for bombardments by the allies, due its important railway junctions and it's heavy industries. The heaviest bombardments on the town took place om 6 & 7 October 1944 when the town centre was flattened and caused the death of 112 people. On the 3rd of April 1944 the town was liberatedby the allied armies. Café 't Neutje Gardens suburb ’t Lansink and the different looking suburb the Casbah Tuindorp 't Lansink. It was based on the concept that public space was on the ground floor level, with the residents living above. Modern shopping facilities The modern town-centre offers a variety of shops. National retail chains together with many typical original quality shops guarantee pleasant shopping in all branches. Especially in the field of fashion the town has a sound reputation to maintain. Highly recommended is the open air market on Wednesdays and Saturdays on the main square in the town-centre, which is considered one of the best in the Netherlands. We had exactly 25 players, which meant 6 playing tables and two people, who played 2 games each. Several regulars could not make it on the day and Gerry Creemers, the usual organiser, was recuperating from a small operation, which meant that Piet Leeflang was asked to take charge, which for an old pro like him was no problem at all. We welcomed back Riet Heyman after the recent loss of her husband Henk while Gerard Kluck and Corie van Os participated for the very first time. The first players arrived shortly after 10 am in order to catch up with friends or just have a chat over a cup of coffee. Meanwhile Thea de Koning, ably assisted by Freda Hovingh, were busy in the kitchen to ensure everyone was served with coffee and to prepare the lunches. This as usual was very much appreciated by all. At 11.00 sharp the competition started and after 3 hours of fierce competition, the scorecards were checked and the winners were announced. The runaway winner won by 536 points and the 2nd placed player was 210 points ahead of the 3rd Winners from left to right: Riet van Emden 3rd, Tony Liebregts 1st and Nel Bakker 2nd. placegetter. Congratulations to the placegetters and a message for the men to pull up their socks next month . The next Sunday Drives will be held on Sunday the 6th of April and the one after that on Sunday the 4h of May All the prizes were gift vouchers to be spent in our shop and Freda Hovingh, who was serving in the shop, made sure that they were well looked after. Thanks Freda. Quite a few players just missed out on the third prize and to all those players: Better luck next time around! Pieter Leeflang Neerlandia Magazine April 2014 Nanda's Blog Differences between The Netherlands & Australia A 20-something year old migrants view on settling and building up a new life in Perth, Australia Ok, so I’ve been in Australia for almost 2 years now and I do feel like I’m settled in and Perth has become my new home-town. However probably once a month you meet people that don’t really understand that you’ve been here for a while and you don’t consider yourself to be a tourist anymore. You get questions fired at you: ‘How do you like Australia?’ ‘The weather must be a plus for you coming from The Netherlands?’ ‘What are the biggest differences between The Netherlands & Australia?’ Here we go again I think to myself and my facial expression probably doesn’t hide my slight irritation, but polite as ever I will answer the questions with a smile. But then I thought, what actually are the biggest differences between the two countries. Apart from the obvious answers like the weather, language and maybe food. I was thinking what else can I think of in terms of work-culture, drink-cultures and maybe even how people spend their free time. So I thought time to make a little list, as I am a list person. I know this sounds like something that has already been done before, but different eyes notice different things. And so I might be able to open your eyes to think out of the box. 1. The prices, I won’t be the first one to say this, but Australia is expensive. A ‘vaasje bier’ for 3 euros is really a European thing, sadly. 2. Work culture, casual Friday, really this is a thing in Australia was my first thought? Where in The Netherlands neat casual clothes are accepted in most offices, apart from the Page 20 The Dutch in WA Neerlandia Magazine April 2014 Nanda's Blog banks and law-firms of course. In Perth everyone has to wear business clothes to work apart from casual Friday. Where in The Netherlands it’s accepted to wear neat but casual clothes to the office. 3. Drink-culture, yeah what should I say, I suppose the prices have a connection to the predrinks culture Australia has developed over the years. Although I do really miss having a drink in the ‘kroeg’. 4. Coffee-culture, most Dutch people will notice the slightly fussy coffee culture in Perth. Which I must say does end up in a really nice cup of coffee, when you’ve finally figured out what kind of coffee to order. 5. English is very basic. I’ve found myself trying to explain to my Australian boyfriend multiple times that I had a ‘gezellige’ night. There simply is no word to describe what dutch people mean with gezellig. 6. Wake up early! Australians really know how to wake up early. They seem to be morning birds, which after 2 years has finally started to make sense to me. Waking up early can be a great way to make the most out of your day. Or to meet some friends for breakfast. (Something I would never do in The Netherlands) Where going out for breakfast here is a big thing, in The Netherlands it doesn’t really exist apart from maybe a cheap HEMA breakfast. I write blogs on a regular basis about my life and views on Australia. If you are interested you can have a look at: http://europeaninaustralia.blogspot.com.au/ Nanda Page 21 The Dutch in WA Neerlandia Magazine April 2014 Challenging puzzles by the Puzzle Wizard CODEBREAKER PUZZLE How to play the Game: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ P O A Codebreaker is a crossword puzzle with no clues! Every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number represents the same letter always. The codes for 2 letters are revealed in this puzzle. Start with entering these letters throughout the puzzle and start guessing your first word. If you are unsure, use a pencil, then you can erase and start again. In he last Codebreaker a big mistake crept in. The puzzle itself gave 2 letters, which were the right ones to start with. But underneath the puzzle the wrong letters were indicated. But once the words "Unusual" and "Ensue" were found, it was plain sailing. The solution for the March puzzle was as follows: A=23; B=24; C=3; D=18; E=14; F=5; G=16; H=8; I=12; J=4; K=20; L=7; M=21; N=17; O=1; P=15; Q=19; R=11; S=9; T=22; U=25; V=2; W=6; X=10; Y=13; Z=26. Sudoku The aim of the Sudoku Puzzle is to insert numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, each column and each 3x3 box must contain one each of the digits 1 through 9.
