Penitentiary portfolio a rc h i v o l t a rc h i t e c t e n b v From 1985 onward, archivolt was commissioned to design penitentiaries based on the skills it developed in public housing (‘optimisation between quality and money’). For the juvenile institution The Corridor at Zeeland (province Noord Brabant), the essence of the design was influenced by a temporary yet mandatory living environment for young offenders. The design for the new penitentiary in Grave (also in Noord Brabant) is characterised largely by the simplicity of the spatial structure and the human character in spite of a far-reaching cost reduction that was achieved compared to other new penitentiaries in the Netherlands from that period. When Hans Putter, Martin van Dort and Frits Toben joined the firm – one after the other – the expertise in building penitentiaries expanded and intensified considerably. In the course of 30 years, the company has developed into a specialised firm in this unique construction category. This concerns institutions for both youths and adults with various security levels in the Netherlands and by now also in Belgium, and potentially in other countries. The core of our approach is to facilitate a humane detention facility that complies with the objective of our customers. Due to the extensive and complex requirements of the building’s usage, logistics and security, the design of such buildings is naturally determined to a great extent by the functional requirements, but also always in combination with their perceptual quality. People’s behaviour is definitely affected by the quality of perception, this makes it a precondition for functionality. The projects that the firm has implemented under the supervision of various project architects over the course of 30 years appear to bear various identifying marks. However, all these buildings have a number of essential mutual characteristics: experience of daylight, well-organised, orientation, relationship between interior-exterior and differentiation in accommodation atmospheres. housing humane detention practices experience of daylight • clarity • orientation • diversification of quality of experience • clearness • individual and community safety of staff and detainees: “to see and be seen” Penitentiair portefeuille a rc h i v o l t a rc h i t e c t e n b v reailised: De Corridor Zeeland (NBr) uitbreiding PI Grave PI “Blue Band” Arnhem Zuid PI “de Glasbak” Hoorn POI Hoorn Mesdagkliniek Groningen Uitbreiding PI Lelystad PI Almelo PI Grave uitbreiding PI Zwolle Zuid 1 PI Zuyder Bos Heerhugowaard PI Hoorn uitbreiding PI de Kruisberg Doetinchem PI Almere PI Zoetermeer PI de IJssel Krimpen a/d Ijssel PI Oyershoek Zutphen PI Nieuwegein PI Ter Apel PI Amerswiel PI de Berg Koepelgevangenis PI Zwolle Zuid 2 PI Zwolle Zuid 1 uitbreiding POI Roermond PI Roermond HvB PI Nieuwegein Reservecapaciteit PI Almere Reservecapaciteit PI Zoetermeer Reservecapaciteit PI Krimpen a/d Ijssel Reservecapaciteit RIM De Lindenhorst Zeist verbouw uitbreiding DCL Lelystad Fase 1 BBA Amsterbaken Amsterdam JJI Amsterbaken Amsterdam Zwolle Zuid 1 & 2 verbouw tbv FPC Zwolle Zuid 2 uitbreiding Separeerafd.
