Aims of Conservation Biology (Wilson, 1992)
- To document the full range of biological diversity on earth
- To investigate the human impacts on species,
communities and ecosystems
- To develop practical approaches to prevent the extinction
of species, to maintain genetic variation within species
and to protect and restore biological communities and
their associated ecosystem functions

Guiding principles CB… (cf. Groom et al., 2006)
-
Evolution is the basic axiom that unites all of biology:
The evolutionary play
-
The ecological world is dynamic and largely non-equilibrial:
The ecological theater
-
Human presence must be included in conservation planning:
Humans are part of the play

Aim of the symposium
CML
Institute of Environmental Sciences
Focus on new approaches ‘beyond ecosystem services’, with
the aim to explore theoretical concepts and ideas that might
point at new directions for Conservation Biology.
Questions:
1) What may be a good role for the concept of ‘ecosystem
services’ in conservation biology and society?
2) Much progress for biodiversity can be made on the
landscape level. But how to get these projects really
working? What are possible theories from ecology or
social sciences that could help shape and energize these
solutions?
3) Solutions require reciprocal learning between science and
society (transdisciplinarity). Do we have methods and
theories to stimulate these interactions?
