BIENVENIDA WELCOME
En poco más de cincuenta años de historia, la Universidad Católica de Temuco – nuestra universidad – ha llegado
a ser una comunidad dinámica que, inspirada en los principios del Evangelio, aporta al desarrollo de La Araucanía
por medio de la formación de personas y profesionales de alto nivel y de la producción de conocimiento científico,
humanista y tecnológico. Nuestra comunidad universitaria conformada por más de mil funcionarios, entre académicos
y administrativos y cerca de ocho mil estudiantes, es una de las más importantes del centro-sur de Chile.
Esta publicación tiene como finalidad acercar al lector a nuestra alma mater, su historia, su identidad, su compromiso
con el contexto social y cultural, en el que se asienta y desarrolla, su estructura y forma de organización; así como las
principales actividades de extensión y vinculación con nuestra región. Sirva también como una aproximación – ágil
pero certera – para transmitir los principios y valores que dan contenido al quehacer cotidiano de nuestros estudiantes,
académicos, personal directivo y administrativo.
Finalmente, deseo que este documento sea visto como una presentación de lo que somos y podemos llegar a ser, una
universidad que contribuye en la formación de los habitantes de su región y país, con una vida cívica más virtuosa y
organizada, con una mayor solidez económica y con una sociedad más democrática, respetuosa de la diversidad y
receptiva con las realizaciones del conocimiento local y global.
In approximately 50 years, the Catholic University of Temuco (UCT) has become a vibrant community. Inspired by the
principles of the Gospel, UCT enhances the development of the Araucanía region by shaping people and professionals
of excellence, and by producing scientific, humanistic and technological knowledge. Over a thousand employees,
including both faculty and staff members, and approximately eight thousand students make up UCT, one of the most
important universities in south-central Chile.
The purpose of this publication is to draw the reader closer to our university, its history and identity, as well as provide
a view of the social and cultural context in which the university continuously develops and shapes the structure of its
organisation. The reader will also be informed of the main extension and related regional activities carried out by the
institution. This brochure will also serve as a flexible yet accurate attempt to communicate the principles and values
that constitute the everyday efforts of our students, faculty, staff and board of directors.
Finally, it is my hope that this document will be seen as a representation of who we are and what we can become: a
university that contributes to the formation of the citizens of the region and the country, fostering a more virtuous and
organized civic life, a stronger economy and a more democratic society that respects diversity and is receptive to the
knowledge brought about through local and global knowledge..

La Universidad Católica de Temuco ha sido fundada por la Iglesia Católica, en el
espíritu del Evangelio de Jesucristo y el Magisterio de la Iglesia, para servir a la
sociedad de La Araucanía y la macro región sur del país, dedicándose desde sus
inicios a la formación amplísima de los futuros profesionales, al cultivo de las
ideas que abren nuevos surcos al saber y a la investigación que perfecciona la vida
y las instituciones, generando nuevos horizontes y posibilidades a su gente y sus
territorios.
Para desarrollar su misión:
• Se funda en un modelo educativo humanista cristiano que ofrece una sólida
formación académica y ética a sus estudiantes, futuros profesionales dispuestos a
servir y construir una sociedad más justa, desarrollada y solidaria.

The Catholic University of Temuco was founded by the Catholic Church in the spirit
of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Church in order to serve the
Araucanía region and all of southern Chile. Since its beginnings, UCT has been
committed to the extensive training of future professionals and the cultivation
of ideas that open up new pathways of knowledge and research. In this way,
the university improves lives and institutions and generates new horizons and
possibilities for the nation’s people and territory.”
In order to accomplish this mission:
• UCT is based on a model of Christian Humanist education. Therefore, it offers its
students solid academic and ethical training, thus forming future professionals
willing to serve society and build a more just, advanced and caring community.

HISTORIA
HISTORY
La Universidad Católica de Temuco fue fundada el 8 de septiembre de 1959, por el Obispo de
la Diócesis Monseñor Alejandro Menchaca Lira, constituyéndose en la primera institución
de Educación Superior creada en la Región de La Araucanía. Sus actividades académicas
comenzaron con los denominados “Cursos Universitarios”, el primer semestre de 1960,
con la asesoría y respaldo de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
A fines de los años sesenta y comienzos de los setenta, en el marco de la discusión de
la “Reforma Universitaria” a nivel nacional, se genera el concepto de “Sede Regional”,
formalizado el año 1972 por el Honorable Consejo Superior de la Pontificia Universidad
Católica. Con esta nueva relación administrativa la Universidad Católica de Temuco
consolida su oferta académica en las carreras de Pedagogía, posicionándose como la gran
institución formadora de profesores para la zona sur del país.
A comienzos de los años noventa, junto a otras sedes regionales de la Pontificia
Universidad Católica de Chile, se inicia el proceso de búsqueda de autonomía que culmina
el día 10 de julio de 1991, fecha en la que se oficializa la creación de la Universidad Católica
de Temuco como Universidad autónoma, perteneciente al Consejo de Rectores.
En la actualidad, la UC Temuco es considerada una de las más importantes Universidades
de la novena región, logrando un alto estándar y excelencia académica en la formación
de profesionales. Universidad Acreditada por el Comisión Nacional de Acreditación (2010
– 2015), cuenta con una amplia oferta educativa organizada en 7 facultades, 1 Escuela
de Ciencias de la Salud, 1 Instituto de Estudios Teológicos y el Bachillerato en Ciencias y
Humanidades.

The Catholic University of Temuco was founded by the former Bishop of the Diocese
Monsignor Alejandro Menchaca Lira on September 8th 1959. The University was
established as the first higher-level educational institution in the Araucanía Region.
The academic activities commenced with the first university courses taught during
the first semester of 1960 with the help and support of the Pontifical Catholic
University of Chile.
In the late sixties and early seventies, within the context of the national discussion
on “University Reform”, the concept of “Regional Office” was created. In 1972 it was
formalised by the Honourable Supreme Council of the Pontifical Catholic University,
therefore enabling the Catholic University of Temuco to consolidate its pedagogy
majors, positioning it as a renowned teacher training institution in the southern
region of the country.
In the early nineties, together with other regional offices of the Pontifical Catholic
University, the UCT began the process of seeking its autonomy; a process which was
finalised on July 10, 1991. On this date the Catholic University of Temuco was formally
established as an autonomous university under the Council of Rectors.
Currently, the UCT is considered one of the most important universities in the ninth
region, achieving a high standard of academic excellence in the training of its
professionals. As a University Accredited by the National Accrediting Commission
(2010 - 2015), UCT offers a wide range of academic possibilities. The University is
organised into: 7 faculties, 1 School of Health Sciences, an Institute of Theological
Education and a Baccalaureate of Science and Humanities.
INTERCULTURALIDAD
La Universidad Católica de Temuco, inserta en una región intercultural, atiende y se
hace cargo de este contexto, convirtiendo esta característica local en un eje de trabajo y
desarrollo académico y social.
En el campo educacional y curricular, la UC Temuco desde 1992 imparte la carrera de
Pedagogía Básica Intercultural en contexto Mapuche, habiendo egresado a la fecha más
de 200 académicos expertos en el área. En el ámbito de la investigación, la UC Temuco
cuenta con el Núcleo Milenio, Centro de Investigación en Contexto Indígena e Intercultural,
unidad que desarrolla investigación avanzada en educación para explicar y comprender
el desarrollo de la escolarización en contexto indígena, implementa una educación para
contextos interculturales y analiza métodos educativos mapuche a través de un discurso
pedagógico sobre fundamentos, valores y categorías de saberes educativos indígenas y
no indígenas, además de generar propuestas para la implementación de una educación
intercultural en contexto considerando la gestión del conocimiento a través de las TIC`s.
Finalmente, en el año 2010, se creó la Cátedra Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas, cátedra
institucional inspirada en el pensamiento del fraile dominico, del cual toma su nombre,
que promueve el diálogo intercultural contribuyendo a la generación de nuevas formas de
relación social y convivencia ciudadana en La Araucanía
INTERCULTURALITY
The Catholic University of Temuco is set in a culturally diverse region, which is a central
focus in its academic and social development.
Since 1992, in the educational and curriculum development fields, the UCT has offered an
Intercultural Elementary Education program which has over 200 graduates to date. In terms
of research, the UCT has created an Indigenous and Intercultural Research Centre, a division
that carries out in-depth studies in order to explain and understand the development of
education in indigenous contexts. This center also implements an educational methodology
for intercultural contexts and analyses Mapuche educational methods through a
pedagogical discourse based on indigenous and non-indigenous foundations, values and
educational knowledge categories. This is done in order to generate proposals for the
implementation of intercultural education in context and knowledge management through
Information and Computing Technology (ICTs).
In 2010, the Friar Bartolomé de Las Casas Lecture Series was established as an institutional
lecture program These talks, named after the Dominican friar on whose thought they are
based, promote intercultural dialogue and contribute to the generation of new types of
social relations and harmonious citizenship within the Araucanía Region.

CONTEXTO REGIONAL
REGIONAL CONTEXT
El contexto regional en el que se inserta la Universidad Católica de Temuco es altamente heterogéneo en su composición social,
cultural y económica. De acuerdo a la Encuesta de Caracterización Socioeconómica Nacional (CASEN) del año 2011, la población
mapuche en La Araucanía alcanza el 31,9% mientras que los habitantes de zonas rurales representan el 32,08% en la región.
Esta heterogeneidad sociocultural se combina con preocupantes resultados en: indicadores de desarrollo humano (0,64 IDH),
estatalidad (50% comunas con baja provisión del estado), pobreza (22,92 bajo la línea de pobreza) y desigualdad (0.57 GINI regional).
En los cuatro índices, la región se encuentra en el último lugar comparado, situación que se agrava al constatar que muchas de las
comunas, si las miramos por sí solas, se encuentran incluso en situación de mayor vulnerabilidad.
Actualmente las cifras de cobertura de la educación superior avalan una ampliación significativa de ésta, que ha permitido que
una mayor cantidad de estudiantes accedan a la educación superior, sin embargo existe un grupo de jóvenes que a pesar de tener
Talento Académico, no accede a la educación superior pues no cuentan con una educación media de calidad que así se los permita.
Es por esto que a partir del año 2013, las Universidades pertenecientes al Consejo de Rectores han implementado la aplicación
del ranking como apuesta para relevar y robustecer el aprendizaje adquirido durante la formación secundaria, porcentaje que
juega un rol decisivo en los resultados de la Prueba de Selección Universitaria (PSU), única herramienta de medición que regula el
ingreso a la Educación Superior a Universidades adscritas al sistema de admisión nacional.
The regional context in which the Catholic University of Temuco exists is highly heterogeneous in its social, cultural and economic
composition. According to the Casen 2011 poll, the Mapuche population in the Araucanía region is 31.9% whereas the population
living in rural areas represents a 32.08% of the regional population.
This socio-cultural heterogeneity is aggravated by the disturbing results in human development indicators (HDI 0.64), government aid
(50% of districts receiving little aid), poverty (22.92% below the poverty line) and inequality (0.57 regional GINI). In these four areas, the
region is positioned in last place. This situation is even more concerning when analysing the data on its own, as many municipalities
are even more vulnerable than statistics indicate.
Currently, the statistics on higher education show a significant increase in coverage, which indicates that a greater number of
students have access to higher education. However, there is a group of young people who, despite of having academic talent, aren’t
able to enter higher education programs due to the poor quality of high school education they have received. Therefore, since 2013,
the universities belonging to the Board of Rectors have implemented the application of a ranking system as a means of supporting
and strengthening the learning acquired during secondary education. This percentage plays a decisive role in the results of the
university entrance exam (PSU), the only measurement tool that regulates entry into higher educational institutions that adhere to
the national admissions system.

SELLO INSTITUCIONAL
El año 1959 el Obispo de la Diócesis San José de Temuco, Monseñor
Alejandro Menchaca Lira, funda la primera Universidad de la región.
Con ello, la iglesia busca responder a las necesidades de formación
e investigación que generen “nuevos horizontes y posibilidades a su
gente y a sus territorios”. (Decreto de Fundación Nº 375).
La Universidad Católica de Temuco, busca y transmite la verdad
basada en los principios del Evangelio que enriquece el sentido de
la vida y le confiere renovada dignidad a la existencia humana. Esto
significa entre otras cosas:
• Respeto por la persona humana y el reconocimiento efectivo de su
dignidad, trascendencia y libertad;
• Diálogo constante entre disciplinas y con la sociedad;
• Preocupación permanente por el discernimiento ético;
• Formación integral de los estudiantes, lo que incluye la
solidaridad y el reconocimiento del otro;
• Comunidad y ambiente educativo lleno de vida, marcado por
las relaciones de confianza, protagonismo juvenil y educadores
cercanos.

Nuestra Universidad Católica de Temuco ha ido construyendo colectivamente
su historia y su impronta al servicio de la macro-región sur de Chile, la que
se distingue por sus grandes riquezas naturales renovables y una generosa
diversidad cultural, lo que contrasta con la pobreza e inequidad social en
que viven importantes grupos humanos. En ese sentido, entendemos el ser
una universidad católica y regional de acuerdo a cuatro grandes principios
orientadores:
• Construir Comunidad: La vida cotidiana al interior de nuestros campus
tiene que ser testimonio del Evangelio. Para ello, la gestión y vida
universitaria se caracterizan por un estilo de comunión y participación.
• Cultivar el diálogo: Practicamos el diálogo como herramienta didáctica,
fomentamos el diálogo interdisciplinario (sobre todo entre fe y razón),
y propiciamos el diálogo intercultural como servicio al entorno,
reconociendo y relevando todo cuanto de valioso tiene el pueblo Mapuche.
• Participar en la misión evangelizadora de la Iglesia: Como institución de la
Iglesia Católica, contribuimos a la sociedad regional en pos de una mejor
calidad de vida de las personas y comunidades.
• Vivir la opción por los pobres: A la luz de la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia,
vivenciamos nuestro quehacer académico como parte de la opción por los
pobres de manera inclusiva y plural.

The Bishop of the Diocese of San José of Temuco, Monsignor
Alejandro Menchaca Lira, founded the first university in the
region in 1959. Through this institution, the Church sought to
meet education and research needs to generate “new horizons
and possibilities for its people and its territories” (Foundational
Decree No. 375).
The Catholic University of Temuco searches for and communicates
the truth based on the principles of the Gospel, thus enriching
the meaning and purpose of life and giving renewed dignity to
human existence. This entails, among other things:

Constant dialogue across disciplines and with society;
Deep concern for ethical discernment
Integral student education, which includes solidarity and
recognition of others;

The Catholic University of Temuco has collectively built its history
and identity in the service of the general southern region of Chile.
This macro region is characterised by its vast quantity of renewable
resources and generous cultural diversity, set against the backdrop
of significant poverty and social inequity in the population. Keeping
the above in mind, our understanding of the importance of being a
Catholic and regional university is guided by four main principles:
• Community Building: Daily life on our campus has to be a testimony
of the gospel. In order to accomplish this, the management of
the university and university life are characterised by a sense of
fellowship and participation.
• Promotion of Dialogue: We implement dialogue as a teaching tool,
we encourage interdisciplinary dialogue (especially between faith
and reason), and we promote intercultural dialogue as a service
to the community, recognising and highlighting the importance
of the Mapuche culture.
• Participation in the evangelising mission of the Church: As an
Institution of the Catholic Church, we contribute to regional society
• by searching for a better quality of life for both people and
communities.
• Rights in favour of the poor: In light of the Social Doctrine of
the Church, we include in our academic work an inclusive and
pluralistic attitude towards the poor.

INCLUSION PROGRAMS
PROGRAMA PROPEDÉUTICO:
Propaedeutic preparatory program
El Propedéutico es una alternativa de ingreso a la Universidad, que constituye una
instancia de formación y selección para jóvenes pertenecientes a liceos con alto índice
de vulnerabilidad de la región de La Araucanía, que presentan destacado rendimiento
académico en relación a su grupo de pares. Este programa busca generar igualdad de oportunidades para el ingreso y continuidad en
la educación superior de los jóvenes, ya que creemos firmemente que los talentos están
distribuidos equitativamente en nuestra sociedad y que a través de la implementación
de programas de acceso alternativos a la PSU, más programas de acompañamiento
académico y socioemocional lograremos que los jóvenes transiten con éxito por la
formación superior y se inserten de manera pertinente en el mundo laboral.
TALENTOS PEDAGÓGICOS
La Escuela de Talentos Pedagógicos está dirigida a estudiantes de tercer y cuarto año
medio de liceos y colegios regionales cuyos promedios de notas los ubique en el 7,5%
superior del ranking, y que manifiesten una vocación temprana hacia la profesión
docente. Se relaciona entonces el talento pedagógico con todos aquellos jóvenes que
independiente de su nivel socioeconómico y pertenencia étnico-cultural, presentan
características personales, vocacionales, socioculturales y académicas deseables y
destacables para la labor docente.
The propaedeutic program is a alternate college entrance program that offers training
and support for young people from highly vulnerable schools in the Araucanía region. This
approach is aimed toward students who exhibit outstanding academic performance in
relation to their peers.
This program seeks to create equal admissions opportunities into higher education
programs for young people. We firmly believe that talents are evenly distributed in our
society and that through the implementation of programs that offer an alternative to the
PSU (the national university entrance exam) as well as more academic and social support
programs, young people can successfully transition from academic life to become a
successful member of the labour market.
Pedagogical Talent – Faculty of Education
The School of Pedagogical Talent targets local students in their third and fourth year
of high school whose average marks rank them in the top 7.5% of their class, and who
show an early keenness for the teaching profession. Pedagogical talent, therefore, is a
possibility for all young people who, regardless of their socioeconomic status and ethnocultural background, have personal, vocational, cultural and academic characteristics
that are desirable and sought-after in the field of education.

Technical talents
El Programa Talentos Técnicos es una alternativa de continuidad de estudios en la
Facultad Técnica de la Universidad Católica de Temuco y se convierte en una alternativa
real al ingreso a la Educación Superior. Para formar parte de este programa, los estudiantes
interesados deben pertenecer al 20% de ranking superior de su establecimiento. El
programa contempla un trabajo inicial con liceos técnicos municipales y particulares
subvencionados.
The Technical Talent Program offers an alternative means of continuing one’s education at
the Technical Faculty of the Catholic University of Temuco and can lead to the admission
into a higher university level education program. To join this program, interested students
must rank in the top 20% of their educational establishment. The program includes
working initially in municipal and subsidised private technical high schools.
INVESTIGACIÓN
RESEARCH
Conectada con su contexto inmediato, la UC Temuco cuenta
en la actualidad con 5 núcleos de investigación, constituidos
como líneas prioritarias de trabajo científico.
Linking it to its immediate context, the UCT currently has
5 research centres which are considered priority lines of
scientific work.
El Núcleo de Estudios Interétnicos e Interculturales tiene
como misión fortalecer las capacidades científicas que estudian, explican y comprenden las relaciones interculturales e
interétnicas y sus consecuencias prácticas para la vida de las
personas y sus grupos sociales. El Núcleo de Producción Alimentaria aborda tanto la producción vegetal como animal,
con énfasis en la nutrición, la reproducción y la salud, siendo
uno de sus focos principales la calidad e inocuidad alimentaria. El Núcleo de Estudios Ambientales desarrolla investigación científica interdisciplinaria en ciencias ambientales con
énfasis en el estudio de cuencas, uso de suelo, recursos hídricos y paisaje, para contribuir a la conservación de las aguas y
la biodiversidad de la macro zona centro y sur de Chile.
The mission of the Center for Interethnic and Intercultural
Studies is to strengthen the scientific capacities that study,
explain and provide insight into intercultural and interethnic
relations and the real-world consequences in the lives of
people and their social groups. The Centre for Food Production
addresses both plant and animal production, with an
emphasis on nutrition, reproduction and health. A primary
focus is placed on food quality and safety. The Centre for
Environmental Studies develops interdisciplinary scientific
research in environmental science with an emphasis on the
study of watersheds, land use, water resources and landscapes
in order to contribute to water conservation and bio-diversity
of the macro central and southern regions of Chile.
El Núcleo Milenio, Centro de Investigación en Educación en
Contexto Indígena e Intercultural (CIECII), tiene como objetivo
la construcción de una base de conocimientos epistemológicos que sustente una educación en contextos sociales y territorios indígenas, fundamentada en Saberes Indígenas y las
Ciencias Sociales, desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria.
The main objective of the Millennium Centre for Education
Research in Indigenous and Intercultural Contexts (CIE- CII) is to
build a foundation of epistemological knowledge based upon
Indigenous Knowledge and the Social Sciences, that support
education in social contexts and indigenous territories, all of
this from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Por último, el Núcleo de Energías Renovables estudia nuevas
fuentes de energía, con foco en los biocombustibles provenientes de biomasa y su relación con el impacto ambiental,
así como el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías de mitigación
de contaminantes, con énfasis en la calidad del aire.
Finally, the Centre for Renewable Energy explores new sources
of energy, with a focus on biofuels from biomass and their
environmental impact, as well as the development of new
technologies for the mitigation of pollutants, with an emphasis
on air quality.

EXTENSIÓN
La Extensión de la UC Temuco gestiona y potencia la vinculación de la Universidad

The UCT Cultural Extension Department achieves and enhances the relationship

Los elencos artísticos universitarios tienen como
objetivo contribuir a la formación personal,
al desarrollo de competencias genéricas y

Conformado por actividades artístico – culturales
en el espacio Aula Magna de la UC Temuco. Se

La Galería de Arte de la UC Temuco es un
espacio relevante en el quehacer artístico de
la región. Cuenta con una sala de 200 metros
cuadrados especialmente diseñada para esta
actividad, donde se difunden diversos tipos de
manifestaciones plástico – visuales de artistas
regionales así como de artistas destacados a
nivel nacional.
Tiene por misión, proporcionar una educación
altamente especializada en el ámbito de
la interpretación musical. A su vez impulsa
la actividad coral a través del Coro de
estudiantes con 25 integrantes y el Coro
Sinfónico compuesto por 60 profesionales.

cultural programs and the creation of spaces
that contribute to professionalising cultural
management within municipalities.
The UCT art gallery is an important space for
the artistic work of the region. It is a specially
designed 200 square meter room where one can
find various types of plastic art exhibits by both
regional and national artists.
The Academy’s mission is to provide a highly
specialised education in the field of musical
performance. it includes a 25 voice student
choir as well as a symphonic choir, made up
of 60 professionals.
